Title: Debbie – I got my new Keurig
Post by: Habanero Smoker on June 13, 2009, 02:45:39 PM
This post if for everyone, but I know that Debbie is a Keurig fan like myself.

I got my new Keurig Platinum B-70; and have been using it for a few days (also just learned that Green Mt. is the parent company). I previously had the Special Edition B-60. When I was setting it up, I noticed that the on/off button is in the back. I was not too pleased with that. Though they recommend keeping the brewer on 24/7, I mainly make my coffee only in the morning; and if I want a cup at a different time, the most you have to wait is 4.5 minutes to brew your first cup. So I had to rearrange a few things on my counter so I can get to the button; not a big deal.

After setting it up, I began the priming process. There was no noise from the pump, so I figured the machine was not working. I looked at the water reservoir and saw the water going down. I couldn't believe it, when the pump was running in my old machine I could hear it two rooms away. OK! So that makes up for the bad design of placing the on/off button in the rear.

My old machine had three cup sizes; this one has four plus an ice beverage setting. The cup sizes are 5.25oz; 7.25oz; 9.25oz and 11.25oz. Even though the brewing temperature is the same, for some reason the flavor is stronger from the B-70. I also notice the water is not forced through as fast, so that could be the difference, or it could be just my imagination. The 11.25oz brews a weak cup unless you use the dark roast or bold flavors. But everyone's taste is different; you may find that size brews a perfect cup.

The ice beverage setting (3.5oz) is great. What you do is fill a tall glass with ice. Select the ice beverage setting and use your favorite k-cup; whether it is coffee or tea (I haven't tried the cold cocoa yet). After brewing, add your sugar and/or cream if desired, and then add more ice; if needed. The Perfect Peach ice coffee is good.

The other features are the same as the B-60. It has the LCD display; clock, auto off function that you can select from 1-4 hours. I have mine set for 2 hours, that way if I forget to shut it off, it will do so in 2 hours, after I have made my last cup. On/Off time I rarely use, but for you it may be handy since you work at home and drink coffee throughout the day. For example, you can set it to come on at 6 AM and turn off at 8 PM. There is a brewing temperature range 187° - 192°F; I keep mine at the factory default, 192°F.

The only thing different on the menu between the B-60 and the B-70 is the brew size selection. The B-60 you had to push a button that coincided with the cup size. On the B-70 you select the default size you want to brew, and push the brew button. The factory default is 7.25oz, I change mine to 9.25oz. If you want to brew a different size, you use the "left" and "right" buttons to make that selection.

Though the B-60 is a great brewing machine, I like the B-70 a lot better. I'm glad I upgraded, and that Keurig has the points program.

Habs,

Thanks for the review.  I may have jinxed my machine saying that it was 4 1/2 years old & no problems, it sounded pretty funky yesterday and brewed a couple ~2 oz cups  ??? .  It's okay today but.....

I like the sounds of that machine.  I like my coffee strong and drink mainly Dark Magic Xtra Bold so I guess I'd never use the 9.25 or 11.25 setting.  The ice setting sounds awesome,  I use the 5.25 setting for that but it ends up weaker than I'd like.

I'm not a flavored coffee fan but the peach sounds interesting for iced coffee.  I may have to order from Keurig and get one of the 5 packs.

Have you seen the Breville Stainless brewer.  It's nice looking but I doubt I'll pay $299 for a coffee maker.   Though I think I paid over 200 for the one I had.  They hadn't been out that long and the price has come down a lot.

Nepas,  get a Keurig, they are awesome.  Way more choices.

I have just bought the new Keurig a couple of months ago, when it is running it is just a whisper, unlike the old one. this is a great machine and I use it none stop, i would recommend it to anyone. I did see the new Breville and it looks quite good, although I have not seen any reviews for it yet.

I'm glad they changed to a quiet pump. I'm not sure if it was the coffee or then noise that would alert me out of my early morning fog. The prices have dropped a lot since they first came out. Also about three months ago they cut the price on almost all models by $20.

The Breville is a nice looking machine, and would probably last for every, but the cost is out of my range.

Margareeman,
Here is a link to a review. Under the pro's it list that the Breville has a charcoal filter. Charcoal filters are now available for most Keurig home brewers.

Deb;

Just a thought, and you probably are already doing this, have you de-scaled it. I have hard water, and when mine starts acting up, and the pump sounds loader, I know it is time to de-scale. If you haven't done this, here is a link. It a PDF file.

Habs,

I descaled and really cleaned it out good two weeks ago.  I only use bottled water in it so that isn't really a problem anyways.  I just figured it was ready for a good cleaning.

Cleaning is one of my cons on the Keurig.  It is hard to get to some of the parts  inside where the coffee runs through.

Habs,

I just got a statement from Keurig.  I have 480 pts.  I used to buy from them and didn't even think about the fact that I might have points.   I'm half way to that coffee maker ;D  I guess I better start buying from them again.

The strong coffee post perked up my ears.  I had no idea what you were talking about until I went to the Keurig site just now.  Now I know what you all have been talking about.  I love those machines, but did not know you could get one for the home - have only used one at a Christian School I do some volunteer work for.  Immediately and emphatically has been put on the "WANT" list.  Although lack of countertop space will probably cause me to put it somewhere else other than the kitchen. I have partaken of a number of cups of their Caribou Sumatra coffee.  Tasty.  Did not know thay had teas, so looked through the list, but did not find a Lapsang Souchong - sad!

You can purchase a My K-Cup, you should also get extra filters. It is an accessory so that you can use your own favorite coffee or tea or cocoa.

I missed this post. That's great. When you get to 500 you get the 15% discount. It won't be long now; before you get you new machine.

I have 40 pts on another email address.   I'm trying to get them to combine the two accounts.

I hope the old one lasts for another 500 pts.  It's starting to sound funky every once in awhile.

Nothing wrong with the b-40.  It has two cup sizes and 48 oz water tank.  The platinum has 5 cup sizes, two which are smaller than the smallest of the b-40 and a 60 oz tank.

Five hundred k-cups would be a six month's supply for me, but it sounds like a three month supply for you. I hope it hangs in there. With the ice beverage feature, I find myself using mine more often. Besides my morning coffee, I now make 2 - 4 glasses of ice tea or ice coffee during the day.

Also it is not programmable, such as set times to turn on/off; no automatic shutoff feature; no heat adjustment; and no backlight in the tank to better see the water level. The B-40 brews good coffee, but if you are going to purchase one, and are starting at the entry level; I would spend an extra $30 and get the Special Edition B-60. It's programmable, and has many features of the Platinum B-70.

Habs & anyone else with a Keurig...

I was just in Costco and they have a package of two $50 keurig gift certificates for $79.99.  I'm going to look at the keurig website & email or call to make sure we would still get % off and accumulate points if we used a gift certificate to purchase coffee.  I'm afraid that they won't give the discount & points but if they do it makes a really sweet deal.  The gift certificates did say that you couldn't purchase a brewer or gift certificates with them.

It is funny to stumble on this conversation. I just got a whole lecture last night from a friend about how great burr grinders are. The conical being the best type of burr grinder. Coffee definitely has evolved!!

With regular gift certificates they give you the points; discounts, and free shipping; hopefully they will do the same with these certificates.

I didn't think to look for expiration date.  I did not see anything on the website that said using using certain gift certificates would prevent you from getting the discount & points.  I sent an email last night specifically asking about the gift certificates purchased at Costco.

Now I know why Am. Ex. won't allow me to send a gift card directly from their site to my niece in CT. I have to have it mail to myself, then either mail it, or personally give it to her.

Thanks. I have to get over there.

Question on the Keurig....If using the K-Cups and have 2 brew sizes, is the larger one a little weak? I like a large cup of dark strong coffee.

For the same type of K-cup the larger cup size is always a little weaker. There are several types of K-cups that I usually won't use the larger size cups. If you like a stronger tasting coffee, always look for the flavors that are marked dark roast, extra bold and/or extra extra bold. But I have found that over time my taste in coffee has change, and I like making the large cup sizes out of flavors that are marked regular, medium roast. Or you can use two k-cups per for one large mug; just brew two smaller cups into a large mug that will hold both servings, but that can get expensive.

If you have a Hannaford's near by, they sell self serve coffee using the Keurig. That is how I got hooked on them. You can try difference coffees, in differrent sizes to get an idea if you would want one or not. Also the machine comes with a handy guide of the brands, and explains the flavor of many of the year round k-cups.

SS,

I like my coffee dark & strong also, I wouldn't get the Elite (B-40 because) I would never use the larger cup setting.   I would get one of the brewers with at least 3 settings.  I use Green Mountain Dark Magic coffee at the 7.25 oz setting (I think that the website says 8 oz but I believe it's actually 7.25 and they round up).  Sometimes I will use the 5.25  oz setting if I want it even stronger.  There are quite a few dark, bold choices now and you would be able to find something you like.  Like Habs suggested you should try to find a place that has one and try a couple coffees though I find that places like that don't always have a good dark selection.

I jinxed it in this thread --  My Keurig is officially dead...  not bad I just looked and I bought it 12/22/04 so I guess it had a good life for a coffee maker - especially for one that was used almost every single day.
Now I have to figure out how many boxes of coffee I need to buy to get to the 1000 point level so I can order my new coffee maker at the reduced price :D  then I'll have the same coffee maker as Habs......

Sorry to hear about your coffee maker. Although the number of k-cup in the regular size boxes have dropped from 25 to 24, the last time I ordered Keurig was still awarding 25 points per box. Have you seen the larger 80 count boxes? I wonder if you still have to order four boxes of those to qualify for the points?

at the very bottom of the page it says it is a model B-66 (not sure if just a newer generation of B-60 or Costco special edition).  It has 3 cup sizes.  The B-70 has five.

It is the B-60 also known as the Special Edition. As Debbie states it may be a an exclusive for Costco. Many large retailers, especially Warehouse clubs place such a large order that they can get the manufacturer to add additional features, or add a bonus in the packaging and give it a different model number. Most cases they will add letters.

By looking at the list of features it seem that the only difference (from what is listed) is that you get an extra 72 k-cups and a My k-cup Coffee filter. That's over an added $40.00 value for the same model at the same price you would get if you went to Bed, Bath & Beyond.

Went over to Bed Bath & Beyond to see what these critters looked like and low and behold the Breville jumped right out and said "take me home!" Whipped out my 20% coupon and got it for $200 even.
Easy setup, not noisey. Just had a cup of "Donut Shop Blend" Pretty darned good!

The Breville is pretty, I just couldn't bring myself to spend the $200 or more.  I ordered the Platinum one that Habs has today.  I bought enough coffee yesterday to bring me to 1000 points, that brought the cost from 169.99 to 99.99 and then I used the gift cards from Costco which were $79.99 for $100 worth.  So the $169 coffee maker cost me $80 bucks.  I'm happy with that.

Hopefully it shows up quickly, It was a rough morning......

yes,  here is the link http://www.keurig.com/coffeeclub.asp?mscsid=ASK1FH27HVLG8HFXHMFCABTB701M4HTB

you get 25 pts for each box of 24 you purchase
from 0 to 500 pts you get 10% off your coffee
over 500 you get 15% off
If you have 1000 pts you can get a $70 discount on the platinum brewer
if you redeem your pts for the brewer you are still at the 15% off

Not sure if below is part of coffee club..
If you buy $45 worth you get free shipping
If you buy 6 boxes of large boxes (24 pks) you can get a free small box (5 k-cups)

they have 5 packs so you can order different coffees/teas to try

Debbie;

When I used my points, my new Keurig arrived in 4 working days, and since they use FedEx it arrived on a Saturday. You made a great deal. You paid less then the cost of their entry model that goes for $99.00.

The free samples and shipping are benefits beyond the club membership.

Deb & SS;

Make sure you register your new machines on line. When you register, you get a code word, and if you order 4 boxes (24 K-cups) you will get two of them for free, free postage, and discounts apply. I'm not sure of points values, my order is still being processed, so I don't know if I will get 50 points or 100.

When I ordered I ordered 2 of the new ice teas they have, which are about one dollar more per box. I happened to have place them first in my order. When I typed in my code, those two boxes, which were a higher price were discounted to free. So I don't know if they are selecting the highest price boxes for the freebies or just the first two boxes in the order.

Amazon's prices seem to be all over the place.  The coffee that I drink on a regular basis is more at Amazon.  Plus, right now I am paying a net cost of $9.49 a box buying through Keurig with the gift certificates purchased at Costco.

Thanks for the heads up on registering the thing, as I would not have known. Put in my order for the freebies today. Got a nice variety of "extra bold" in stock for me and Cocoa and Tea for the wife. She is really hooked on the Mandarin Orange Decaf Tea. Also thanks to Habs and Deb, cause I did not know these things existed.

Wow! Sorry to hear about that. I just googled the problem also, and it seems to happen to many. By any chance, did you try unplugging it for about one minute and plugging it back in. Sometimes a power interruptions will mess up the computer chip's memory in most appliances. Unplugging and plugging it back in frequently works.

I unplugged it overnight thinking that it might help but it did not.

When I was talking with the tech person I said "I was hoping you would tell me to press a couple buttons together'' but she didn't have that as a solution.  I will google and try to find that button order.

They are sending me a new one but it hasn't shipped yet.

I did get two cups of coffee out of it... I tried the ice tea setting and I'm going to like that.

Does not hurt to try.

There are 4 steps to fix this:

1. Simultaneously press and release "small mug" and "medium mug". Immediately afterward press "menu" 3 times. (Menu is the black button under the display screen.) You should see a time 6:09 on your screen.

2. Press "menu" once. Your LCD screen should say Brew 0:00.

3. (I messed this step up like 10 times and had to unplug the machine, then replug it and start over at step one. You have to unplug if the LCD displays "auto ____". If it continues to flash "Not Ready" and "Brew" then you can just keep trying step 3). Press and hold "medium mug". While holding "medium mug" press and release "menu". Immediately after pressing "menu" (while still holding "medium mug") press "small mug". Release "small mug" and "medium mug" at the same time. This entire thing needs to be done very quickly. as soon as you release "menu" go to "small mug" and release both buttons quickly.

4. Unplug the machine (do not turn it off). Wait for 3 seconds or so. Plug it back in, turn it on and follow the instructions for priming.

Thanks SS!

Unfortunately it doesn't work.  The menu button does nothing and it doesn't have separate buttons like the older model for the cup sizes.  I guess I'm going to have to wait  :(

At least Dunkin Donuts is only 1 1/2 miles away in a couple of directions (probably six of them within 3 miles).  If I known last week that I would be without a coffee maker this long I would have invested $10 in  a cheap regular coffee maker - it would have been cheaper than DD for a week plus

Deb;
I just got home, and my k-cups were waiting for me. I going to try one of the ice teas as soon as I log off. How did you like the ice beverage setting? Is your other machine still holding up?

Habs,

I was able to make two cups of iced coffee with the ice beverage setting before it died.  I really like that feature, I like my coffee strong and it was perfect.  The old machine is dead.  I received the shipping email today on the replacement and it won't be here until Monday.  I think I'm going to run out to Target and buy a really cheap coffee maker to get me through Monday morning, they have all their back to college deals on so I should be able to get one for $10.

I did do the registration online and placed an order right before it died.  I have some of the iced tea k-cups coming.

Maybe I'll luck out and be able to use another code when I register the replacement.

Yeah! The ice beverage feature is great. I never got a chance to make one of my ice teas last evening. If they put you through that grief, they should just give you all four boxes for free when you re-register. Sorry you got a clunker, but you have had one for over 4 years and you know how dependable they are.

I have the Platinum that allows you to make 12 oz cups. That size if good for brewing the bold, extra bold and dark roast varieties of k-cups; such as Newman's. I have a bunch of Green Mountain Dark Magic decaf that I haven't tried yet. I'll try a cup this morning. The reason I have so much is I don't drink decaf, and I keep getting them in the variety packs that I receive as gifts.

I mainly like the flavored coffees, and like to experiment with the new flavors as they are released. I just received the winter blend and French toast made by Green Mt. If you haven't checked out the milk chocolate by Cafe Escapes, you need to try it. It is a little more costly, but it is well worth it. It makes Green Mt. hot cocoa tastes like mud water.

UIS,

Do you have a Costco nearby?  Right now (and I hope they have for along time) I am buying directly from Keurig (http://www.keurig.com/coffeetea.asp?mscsid=FDWSJCBAR21V8KCTW68GE01XDVSH79CC).  Costco has $100 of Keurig gift certificates for $79.99.  At the Keurig website I get a 15% discount (it's a club thing that you automatically get enrolled in & it doesn't take much to get to the 15% off level, plus you earn points towards a big discount off the platinum brewer) So right now the cost is averaging about 9.50 for the 24 packs using the gift certicates that I buy from Costco.  Plus, they have free shipping if you buy over a certain amount which I think is about 4 boxes.

The other thing I like about Keurig is that they have boxes of 5, so you can buy a small quantity of something to try.  If you buy 4 boxes of 24 you get a free 5 pack also.

Costco,  they keep moving them around the store.   It is just a piece of cardboard that you bring to the register though , they keep the actual gift certificates in the front.  So if you can't find the display just ask at the register.  I usually shop in Waterbury but I imagine they have them in Brookfield too.

Brookfield did carry them back in December, but I haven't been there since. Brookfield had the at the end aisle display. You will see the Keurig machines; down where the knives and cooking utensils are located.

I know what you mean about the weekends, but at least on Saturdays the Brookfield store serves free pastries and coffee, :) but when I go on Saturdays it is generally for the fish they bring in on the weekends.

Deb,

I saw that and I purchased that for one of my sisters, because she likes to just throw all varieties of k-cups in one basket. That drive me nuts, but I didn't think about just putting one or two types in each basket. So now I have to think about how to clear off some counter space. :) It funny that you mention you have to keep certain k-cup for others. I always keep Green Mt. Nantucket Blend on hand, because it is the only k-cup one of my nieces will drink.

I purchased the four box display, the others are gifts. I've also seen a mini-carousel, I believe holds 12 k-cups.

Sorry for the detour,
Habs, my father was a radio man in the navy.
he lost his vision around 1996,
this is just one more thing on his can do list.
He teaches Morse code on the ham radio, he is a member if a big radio club,
and is also involved in search and rescue teams in a couple of counties here in Georgia.
these are just a few things he does to drive mom crazy......i mean keep himself busy... :D
I am very proud of him.
And now back to your regularly scheduled program....Already in progress.

I just tried some decaf, Van Houtte medium roast, not too bad, i will be trying more as i go along
to see which ones i will stay with.
