Title: Can't make the Raptor work
Post by: BigRed on February 19, 2005, 09:20:55 PM
This cry for help is going out to nsxbill and Hab or other users of the raptor Guru. I have not had the chance to use this new toy since I got it about a month ago. I sent out a post then for help and printed out what Bill e-mailed in terms of hooking up the raptor. Here is the issue and being old I know I am doing something stupid, whenI plug the raptor into the electric outlet the yellow light goes on BUT when I plug the raptor into the back of the cabinet the light goes off. I thought possibly it would work after I hooked the Guru up to it and set the controls. I had planned on doing a brisket all night but now I am conerned about not being able to use the raptor/guru and going back to the old method. IDEAS anyone???

Red...Instant help I might be. Plug the raptor into a power source. Plug the smoke gen into a power source. Plug the cabinet into the raptor. Set Bradley to high heat. Turn on the raptor and set the temp. That's the way I understand it to work. Good luck!!

I think you ment to say "turn on the Guru" Hump, the Raptor has no on off switch.  Just a minor slip-up but I am sure BigRed is confused enough at this point..

Red, other than that clarification, Hab told you how it is.  It is very simple.

If you followed the instructions,
The Smoke Generator is plugged in to elec source
the Raptor is plugged into Smoke Generator
the BS cabinet is plugged into the Raptor
you have the fan out 12V wire plugged into the Raptor
You have the 12V convertor plugged into power source
you have your thermocouple and meat probe plugged into the Guru
you have set a meat temp and a smoker temp
you have slid the switch all the way to right on the BS cabinet
you press the on button on the Guru and the raptor doesn't work?
Slide  the 12V wire on the Raptor in and out and then find a position that illuminates the Raptor light and cabinet light by slightly moving it back and forth....(no nasty commments).  This happened to me on both the Guru competitor and Procom4.  I think the 12V cord is not matched well male to female outlet on the Raptor....(again no nasty comments).  Finding the sweet spot might get the Raptor working for you.

Sorry, didn't get back to you sooner.  I worked today.

Bill and all that helped!

Thanks for the help. I finally got it working but only after I switched the plug in for the power source to the Guru with the contact to the blower then the raptor light came on. The temp. this morning when I woke was 200 degrees as set but the internal temp was not there yet so the brisket is still on. Thanks again.

BigRed

Just out of curiosity, were the cords labeled where to plug them into with Dymo-like labels twisted around the ends?  When I bought the Competitor Guru Raptor they weren't...The Procom4 Raptor combo cords were all labeled.  Admitting I hooked it up wrong too when I first tried to use it.  If they didn't mark them, I think they should, or use different plug sizes so a newbie cannot hook it up incorrectly.

The folks selling these know how to do it, but the labels really help us getting it going the first time.   I know you will agree now that you tried to wing it without really good instructions.

Hope it didn't delay your first smoking effort too much.  The Competitor or Procom4 /Raptor work great, but the instructions have much to desired.  Eventually you get it right and it is an amazing asset to own and use to control the Bradley.

Lastly, did they improve the instructions about silencing the alarm on the Competitor.  If not, you just turn it on then hold the alarm silence for several seconds to shut it off and keep it from sounding all the time.

Glad we all could help get it rolling for you.

Sorry for the non-reply. I've been away this weekend. Looks like you have things resolved.

Bill helped me out too when I had problems.   But, my fuse wasn't in the seat right....
Now, no one is allowed to touch it at all, it just gets unplugged from the wall.   Husband bought me a nice adapter plug with three way plug in with circuit breaker (yellow) at Lowe's.  It really helped with getting everything plugged in and kept me from having fifty cords around.

Log on to this website.  The Competitor and Procom4 are the controllers, and the Raptor is the item needed to control an electrical smoker
