The Alaskan pics from dbrown1 were magnificent and great photography from his mom. http://forum.bradleysmoker.com/index.php?topic=11865.0
So, I figured I'd put up a few of my 'local' pics. Nothing really great, can't compete with Alaska or those quality photos. Bur, I'd encourage you to put up some of your local pics of things found around your house. Let's see where we all live. OK, here's a few.

You know, we all like pics here. So, let's get some up, eh? (Canadian is OK).
That bear sure has the deer in the headlights look! :D Great pics Arnie. By the way, you should have included that little raccoon from a couple days ago, that was a good one.
Great Pixs...

Actually, it's brown; my poor post processing. It is known as a wood chuck, AKA groundhog. I had a fenced garden at one point. One dug under the fence and I h=found him rolling around in my snow pea patch; happy as a pig in a smoker. ;)
If a wood chuck could chuck wood, how much wood would a wood chuck chuck, if a wood chuck could chuck wood?
Dang. All I have is 'food pics'. Will try to get some of the local environs..

I was thinking of smoking the raccoons. Fixed right, they are pretty close to pork. Hmm, pulled raccoon, a little good yellow sauce, sounds like good eats. Any kind of wood ya like should work. ;D
What kind of duck is the big white one?
Do they catch and eat them? What is the best smoke flavor?
Great pics Arnie!
That is one big sparrow at the feeder! :D
I was going to ask what the purple animal was, too.
Carolyn
I added a birdy pic from my front yard.
Check out the white one, we call him Mobie.
He's not albino just white like a domestic turkey but he is as wild as his bronze brothers.
We have watched him grow up from a little poult :)

Post your cornfields or whatever. Way back when, maybe '72 or '73, I drove out on Route 66 heading to Lubbock Texas. Yes, a lot of flat land and corn fields. And, yes, I was in my blue '69 T-Top Corvette. It was a great trip except for the sunburn.
Great and beautiful pics...even the cats are beautiful....(wow!, I didn't even choke on that! Sorry Arnie...love the cats...gorgeous critters...as long as they're yours! ;) ;) ) Love seeing pics from elsewhere...great idea, Arnie!! Love the "ghost winged" honker and the tasty turkeys..anxious to see more

A Straight Dope Classic from Cecil's Storehouse of Human Knowledge
How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
July 17, 1987
Dear Cecil:
This question has gnawed at me since I was a young boy. It is a question posed every day by countless thousands around the globe and yet I have never heard even one remotely legitimate answer. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
— R.F.B., Arlington, Virginia
Are you kidding? Everybody knows a woodchuck would chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood. Next you'll be wanting to know why she sells seashells by the seashore.

Arnie I love the pics BUT the bat scares me to death :o
I'm not afraid of bugs or spiders, I'll pick up snakes even but bats freak me out for some reason.
It is a great pic even though it scares me :D

Great pictures everyone, well except for the groundhog/woodchuck, there should have been crosshairs on that one. I only live about 20 miles north from Punsxatawney, PA where for some dumb reason they worship groundhogs. Yea that was where groundhog day was thought to be started.
Here's a few picture from our area. I did not take the elk pictures, I think I got them from a friend who is really good at taking pictures. The elk range is about 25 miles NE of where I live and I go there several times a year to watch them. I'll be going up next week to hear them bugle and see how many I can see, plus the leaves should be turned pretty well, so I may get some pictures.

Thanks to all for your participation. This seemed like an interesting idea at the time. It came about after seeing HR's house pics and the gorgeous pics dbrown1 posted, even though it doesn't directly have anything to do with smoking. More of a gettin' to know everyone a bit better kind of thread.
We've had a few twisters touch down around here but they're pretty rare. Like Carolyn, though, we can get some pretty nasty thunder storms. Currently, it's partly cloudy, about 63 degrees and wind gusts are pushing 40.
Here's a few from a couple of years ago. My road is paved but going out of the driveway and hanging a right, it doesn't last for long.
This is a house where the paving ends.

Sounds to me like you might have done some cowboy'n Ka Huna...you got 'em pegged!! Grew up working horses/cattle and developed an intense fondness for motorcycles at an early age as a result! ;)
Quote from: Kummok on October 07, 2009, 02:32:37 PM...you got 'em pegged!! ... developed an intense fondness for motorcycles... as a result!
Never cowboyed but did do a bunch of riding back in the day (when I weighed less than the horse). Always thought of them as pretty low on the scale of desired transportation and also developed a taste for fast iron. Don't even do that anymore - too many really bad drivers out there, can't ride very far on the island without passing yourself, kidneys yell louder than they used to, and got tired of bugs in my teeth. I do still enjoy them convertible automobile thingies (especially since we get rag-top days year-round here).
The downside of my more "sedate" lifestyle is that I don't have a reputation worth living down to anymore.
Thanks Squirt, now I'm going to have that reoccurring nightmare with the munchins and the flying monkeys! :D
I'd don't know, giant spinning clouds coming down out of the sky to get you seems kinda scary to me.
That is a really awesome pic though!! :D

A few of the working farm down the road a piece. One can't just go wandering around on someone's property taking pictures so I knocked on the door and spoke to the owner. He seemed kind of suspicious of me, maybe a revenuer or something. He gave me permission and said it was good that I asked or I might have found myself on the wrong end of a 12 gauge.
This seems pretty typical of New England farms.

They were nice people. They used to put produce and a cardboard box out at the roadside. Take your produce and put some money in the box. Unfortunately, some people started taking both. So, they stopped. What a shame. Maybe that's what happens with urban sprawl.
We still have a few folks here that sell produce and/or honey roadside by the honor system. Money box is secured real good, but the merchandise can be taken. Owners always indicate that they only put out a limited amount at a time and if someone needs it bad enough to steal, then they are welcome to it.

I dont hunt anything but rabbits on my property, its kinda cool having the birds around they help keep the grass hoppers down. I go to the neighbors for the turkey and deer.

So far I've only gotten to "concerned" with a funnel cloud, during my times out weather spotting for our Fire Department. I was 2 miles west of town one evening (the same night as the Little Sioux (Iowa) Boy Scout Camp got hit), when I looked up into the sky just to the South of me and saw slight rotation in the clouds...I'm talkin' less than 100 yards South too. My hand was on the radio to report it when it quit, as well as looking which way to go to get my butt outta there. I do want to see one, some day, but not that close, and not one that causes damage, let alone personal injury to anybody.
Sorry to hijack...will find my camera and go lookin' for stuff to show the area around here.

Olds: bat size. This is a less-cropped view to give a better idea of size. The vertical siding board he's on is 6.5 inches wide so I'd say the bat was maybe 2 inches wide. He just crawled out of that gap, probably about 1/4 to 3/8 inch. My wife bought a bat house for them but they seem to prefer MY house ;D

Here's a couple of pictures from Buffalo CO WI, a pretty well known area for large whitetails. These were taken about 20 miles from where I live. Not a large buck but the white one is an albino deer that was in a field along with several others. Forgive the quality of the pics as my camera is a bit on the weak side for the distance these were at.

Wow an albino whitetail. That would make a cool mount. Do you get albino bucks or just doe's.
I've never seen an Albino whitetail before. Lord knows we probably have more whitetail around here than squirrels. The bucks are fairly rare though, mostly does and "Bambis".
I should be able to get some closeup shots. I can go out into the yard, wave my arms, clap my hands and shout at them. They stand there and look at me like I'm an idiot. Well ... 'nuf said.
;D ;D ;D No comment LOL.

This is the only one I have ever seen and was lucky enough to have the camera that day. Bucks have been spotted but it would be a pretty expensive mount as all Albino deer are protected in WI.
We have an island up the coast that has white black bears. They are called spirit bears. I don't know if they are protected or not but they probably should be.
I gotta work on getting some photos loaded on my laptop. I have them all on my external hard drive and CD's from my last laptop. So I will have to post a few here and there.
Here is a couple of my cabin in northern WI...I don't get there as much anymore since I moved to St. Louis but it is one of my favorite places in the world.

That picture gives a pretty good description on the area I live in. Lot's of farms but they will farm a mountainside here! This is a picture at the end of the road where I was born. It's kind of special to me as the road signs were named after my grandfather. The farm had been in the family well over 100 years at the time. And I remember crashing my bike coming down that hill when I was 8 years old. It was gravel at the time so I was picking stones out for a while. :D

The BC Kermode Bear. In the 70s it was thought that they were just
a freak of nature, if they were real at all. The first Nations talked about them but
not many white man had seen them. Today there are many pictures of the
Kermode Bear ( Spirit Bear) There was even a documentary on them a few years a go

Here are a couple of pictures from about 2 1/2 hours from our house.
Good friends live here so we are often here camping and fishing.Well maybe
not were the picture was taken from but from the town in the picture.
First Picture is taken from the Mascot Mine which shut down in the 1950's.
The mine is built on the side of a mountain above Headley, BC.
From the main mine site. Bunkhouse below and town of Headley in the valley,
with the Silmilkemeen River running by the town.
Looking up from the Main mine site. Largest building is the cookhouse and bunkhouse,
The stairs are all new, there are over 900 stairs to get to the mine from the top. Getting
to the mine was easy, the climb back up was a b****.
Wow, look at those stairs. Sorry, I'll take the escalator. ;D ;D
Hope there are two or three rest stops along the way.
One thing that I did learn on my trip .......I have a cousin that is a year or so older than me and thru the years we haven't stayed in touch like we should have.
He has always had a thing for Gumbo. He lives down in New Iberia, La. He told me he had to leave right after the funeral to get ready for the "National Gumbo Cook-Off" this weekend in New Iberia. Food Network is there for filming a show to be aired later. Last year he placed 3rd in the "Professional Division". New Iberia is also where they make Louisiana brand Hot Sauce. I have been in their plant and the hot sauce is fermented for 3 to 5 years and the vapors will make you eyes pop out of your head. Back to my couisin, He promised me he would take pics and e-mail to me and when and if he does I will post them. He said they are expecting over 100 teams this year.
CRG - See if you can get the "unclassified" version of his recipe. I'm always looking to improve my (already pretty good) gumbo skills.
I do know that he makes a stock of turnips and a few others that he mumbled and drains the stock and adds that to his rue.
I'll do my best.
We have plans to have a "Family Reunion" 2nd weekend in June and he said he would do some Gumbo. I will be watching, listening, note taking, and pic taking.

NIce fall day, nice pics, great looking kids. Know you had fun.
How Did you get him to stand still long enough to take a picture of him Scott?
Super glue on the bottom of his shoes ;D
It was kind of funny..I try and walk quiet and teach them how to and it sounded like a herd of elephants behind me. Adam really thought it was cool to step on every stick so they would break, and of course jump over everything he could find :D
SIA
Nice looking country SIA. I believe it's a good thing to be familiar with guns, handling, safety and respect at a fairly early age. I'm sure I can get an argument on that one. ;)
There's a state forest down the end of my street. It has a big sign that says "HUNTING IS ALLOWED". Occasionally, my wife and I go there for some handgun practice, calibers ranging from .22 to .44 Magnum; the latter gets kind of expensive. I have a .177 air rifle with scope that I practice with too and that's fun and economical. I don't hunt anymore. I get my brisket at the store. ;D
That .177 air rifle would be good on them pesky little tree rats.
Quote from: Tenpoint5 on October 10, 2009, 08:06:55 PM

Actually I sometimes use the rifle to coax the deer off my property. I use flat-nosed target pellets. I'm sure they give a nice sting but won't penetrate or hurt the animal. But these things just don't seem to learn.
The tree rats aren't so bad. But, every year or two there's one rat smarter than the other rats. My bird feeder is pretty well protected. But, there'll be one squirrel, every now and then, that studies the situation and manages to get on the feeder (evolution?). My wife puts out peanuts for the chipmunks and squirrels. But that one squirrel won't quit with the bird feeder. S/He has to deal with the S&W .22 revolver. Luckily, it hasn't shot back yet.
Them squirrels and coons are smart animals when it comes to getting something they want.
I feed year round at my deer camp. Twice this year my feeders were taken apart and the timer thrown on the ground
and it happened each time after the feeder had run out. I finally put a combination lock on the timer.
when i got back to camp, my timer was intack. I looked at the combination lock and that dang coon was only one number off.
ROFLAMO That's a good CRG. Like the scene in Crocodile Dundee where the dead kangaroo shoots back at the poachers.
I was smoking/cooking some beef this afternoon. But, that's another thread.
So, while documenting it, I took a couple shots of my "back yard" off of the deck the OBS lives on.

My first thought - I hope you have curtains!
No we love it when the neighbors come out on their deck and we are doing the wango tango with the lights on. Just kidding.
An "old" man I know said he was talking to this guy and all the guy wanted to talk about was the different ways he did the "wango tango".
He finally turned to the old man and ask him if he had ever done it that way.
The old man said he had and that he didn't really like it. He said he just did it for the kids cause they like to watch.
He said the other guy left without saying a word.

I love the Snow Birds. Dad was in the Canadian Air Force. I was raised on Air Force bases across Canada. Saw many air shows in my younger years. What alot of people do not know about the snow birds is that the support for the birds ride in the jets with the pilots form show to show. The jets are Tutor training jets. Dads last posting was Cold Lake Alberta were NATO does alot of its training. A great place to grow up as a kid.
wow..........Thanks Mike for the pics and link.
Just to clarify...I meant no disrespect to the Canadian Air Force, or anybody else with my "Geese" comment, just a simple little joke since they were from Canada and flying in a "V".
And, Walley, those were some really cool pics...glad I wasn't aboard to take them.

Mr. Walleye, very nice pictures of some great formations. Didn't see the one you had posted but they did perform many. We were at a parking structure 3 to 4 miles away just to watch the Snow Birds. I heard that on the day before, on take off, the number one plane caught a bird and immediately turned around, landed, and came right back out in a backup plane. Apparently not really missing a beat. With nine planes they sure can make some great formations.

I figured that there weren't any hard feelings, I've just been stickin' my foot in my mouth a bunch lately, and I want to make sure that people know that I'm just kidding around, hoping to get a laugh. There's a fine line, and I have been known to stray over it on occasion...not on purpose.

What a segue for my favorite Canadian joke (which so few other Americans understand)...
So one summer when Jean Chretien was PM, he went to visit Flin Flon (a small "anglo" town in Manitoba). As he debarked from the aircraft, he was met by a party of local dignitaries headed by the mayor of Flin Flon.
The mayor noted that the Prime Minister was wearing a fox hat, even though it was summer and the temperature was over 90(oF). He said to Chretien, "Mr. Prime Minister, welcome to Flin Flon. We're certainly honored to have you here but, if I may inquire, why is it that you chose to wear that very handsome fox hat in the middle of summer?"
Chretien replied (in his fairly heavy French accent), "My wife told me to wear it."
The mayor said, "Oh, really?"
Chretien said, "Oui. I was packing last night and I asked Aline (my wife), 'What should I wear?'"
She said (also in a heavy French accent), "Where are you going?"
I replied, "Flin Flon."
She said, "Where the fox 'at?"

so Jean Chretien is forum member and he was PM in the summer, by Flin Flon, while wearing a fox for a hat and it was hot. The mayor regarded he had a fine looking fox, but looked stupid for puttin it on his head in the summer. OK...his wife told him to oui, so he oui ouied. Then he packed up and as he left she told him to fox off at the where.
see, we are pretty smart, I understood every word.

I haven't been able to reach my cousin but I did look up the results from the newspaper in New Iberia and.......He didn't place this year. Can't wait to hear his excuse, probably gonna blame it on our uncle's funeral. The guy from Food network came in 2nd in the professional division. I need to go to that thing next year.
While I was there I visited the old family cemetery and took these. Of course I never got to meet Great Grandfather or Grandfather. My Dad was second to the youngest of 11 kids. My Dad's oldest brother fought in WW1 and my Dad fought in WW2.
