Title: Thermapen or substitute
Post by: GusRobin on June 07, 2010, 08:57:28 AM
The next toy necessary tool to add to the fun alleviate the extensive burden of providing smoked food for family and friends is an instant thermometer. I see Thermapen used by many. The lowest price I have seen is about $96. Before I hit the button and buy it, wanted to pulse the members to see if anyone has any other recommendations.
Thanks

Gus, there is a thread floating around where he e-mailed thermapen and got one "out of the box"

for like $70.

I'll see if I can hunt it down.

I have had mine for a couple of years now, and would not be without it. I use it on every cook, inside or out.

me five and six - I have two.  Don't use remotes much anymore!   However, even if I love my thermapens, not sure I'd go $96 unless someone was buying it as a gift for me!   ;D

CDN makes the Q2-450 which ain't bad,  Waterproof, but not quite as fast as a thermapen.  And doesn't look as sturdy with the probe sticking out all the time rather than folding.  But a third of the price of a thermapen or less.

I have one that looks like that made by Taylor that is not that great!

I have a 'gently used' Thermapen that is worth every penny.

I'll use a Maverick remote just to get a general idea of what is going on in the pit (without opening the lid), but I do my final checks with the Thermapen.

I've heard that there is a knock off of the Thermapen - folding and everything.   But nothing like the speed.  Instead of 1-3 seconds say 30 -60 seconds

That sure is purdy, but how fast is it?

Thats what sold me on the Thermapen, SPEED.

Depends on who you listen to.  Some are happy with a few seconds.  Some say it takes longer than a few seconds.  Thermapen is 3 or less - I believe.

I probably spent the price of 3 Thermapens over the last 5 years on one that I could rely on, so be careful out there.

anyone who wants the new splash proof modle send an email to [email protected] he has a few of the new splash proof "open box/return" units left
I got one for 70.00 and it doesn't even appear that the box had been opened, works perfect and still had the electrostatic cover on the lcd,
accuracy is gaurantee'd and comes with the certificate of accuracy and manual.
he had a couple different colors last we spoke, but cant say now.
hope this helps some still wanting one

Thermapen here too on everything including pizza... next to my pig tail flipper I don't need much else when I cook except a glass of vino or beer.

That's a nice find. A few seconds slower then the Thermopen, but plenty fast. The the temperature range is more then adequate for home use.

I LIKE that!

Limited Time:
Buy 5: Only $19 each!

At that price I would mind having a couple of them.

If anyone else wants one, I will buy 5 and keep 2 or 3

and sell the rest for what it cost.

Let me know!

What about this one. It is $5 more but it has adjustable calibration.

Plus you won't have to stick your head in the smoker to read it.

I dunno...
I like the way the $19 one reads ---in the side of the handle (like the Thermapen).

I want two, so I have one left.I split the shipping to me, 6 ways ($2 each)

So they are $21 plus shipping to you (bubble pak, probably $2)
