Title: Paducah BBQ Fest Shopping List
Post by: KyNola on September 11, 2010, 12:50:02 PM
2 derelict friends from IL and their beautiful wives coming in for the BBQ Fest.  Begins 9/22 and goes through the weekend. 60 tons of pig will find some hickory smoke.  Had to go shopping today for my friends.

1 case of pork bellies approximately 100 pounds-check
80 pounds of hickory pellets-check
1 case Abita Amber beer-check

There will be some serious horse trading going on.

If you're close you should come for this BBQ fest. 50 teams competing and the neat part is it's all for charities.  Each team is cooking for the charity of their choice and all of the proceeds go there.  The competition is fierce and the food is incredible.

Here's the website for more details!  http://www.bbqontheriver.org/index2.htm

The Abita is 'To Go'...   I'll see if I can photo-document what really is consumed...   :o

Look for a new post with 'blow by blow' action comments.  (whenever I stumble back to the room and upload pics)
This will be a fun one!

I think Larry had a typo.  Probably at least 10 cases of beer  ;D

Yeah, the case of Abita is a "traveller".

Guys, this thing is so much more than a BBQ Comp.  Numerous other organizations selling everything from homemade sweet rolls to Cajun Boiled Corn on the Cob.  Great bands play for free all weekend.  Beer and Wine Tent, unfortunately not free >:( :D

STC and friends scored a GREAT place to stay right across the street from the whole thing so they can escape when they want/need to and believe me eventually they will because some 30-50,000 people are expected to attend. :P :P :P

Come one come all.  We're partying all weekend with STC and Hal! :o :o

CRG, "pack up the babies and grab the old ladies 'cause everyone knows......".  Load up the truck and come on.

50,000?    Where will we park, Metropolis??

We'll have cheap beer & drinks (and real bathrooms) in the hotel suite..   ;)

MrsSTC has to herd children that morning, then we'll get on the road around lunch time.

CRG, thanks for the compliment but I'm too old to get in enough trouble to get locked up! :D

Southern, just going to hang out and have fun.  One of the teams had asked me earlier if I wanted to join them but haven't heard back from them since.  I personally know 3-4 of the local teams.  Hopefully I'll be able to get STC and Hal behind the scenes but those guys on those teams are really busy once the crowds start rolling in.  60 tons of meat and every team will run out before the thing is concluded.  You should come down,  You're only about 4-5 hours away.  I'll make STC buy you a beer!

16 pounds of that Carolina goodness headed my way next weekend!  Will be exchanging Abita Amber, hickory pellets and hopefully pork bellies if the pork belly truck arrives as promised.

They started erecting the stage yesterday where the bands will perform all next weekend for the BBQ Fest.

That's a bit farther than I trust the old hoopty, so we are taking the Black Bobsled..

There is room in the trunk for a couple OS coolers.  (and I have some insulated 'cold bags' that will keep stuff frozen for hours)   We'll be in good shape.

How big is a pork belly anyway??

Depending on the pig, they can go 10 pounds.  Think of a slab about 2 inches thick, 18 inches or so long and 12 inches or so wide.

Do you guys have regular names for your cars?  Hoopty, go-kart, black bobsled, bus.  Is that code that us folks that live a little further South are supposed to decipher?  Ya'll aren't Navaho code talkers are you?

Mine are mostly in the 24-30 inch long range when I buy them by the case then I cut them down into thirds for curing. Guys think more like three gallon ziploc bags side by side for reference.

Well, unfortunately some things are just not meant to be.  The logistics of getting both Hal and Pat to the BBQ Fest Thursday night is extremely difficult at best.  For that reason, it appears we are going to have to decline the opportunity to smoke with one of the teams Thursday night.  Arrival times are going to be later than originally thought and finding parking for Pat's vehicle and getting them to their hotel is now our highest priority as all of the streets around their hotel which is right across the street from the Festival will be closed for several blocks out.  Downtown Paducah is not really equipped for a crowd of this size, 30-50,000 so it becomes a challange just getting there.

I was at the Fest site this morning and let me tell you I have never seen so many huge smokers and piles of hickory in my life.  Some of them have already fired them up and have begun burning hickory in order to get their fires right.  The Fest doesn't start until tomorrow!

Post by: squirtthecat on September 22, 2010, 06:49:13 AM

Yeah, I wish we could have gotten on the road earlier, but MrsSTC has obligations at school that morning.  Then we'd have to load the car and book it 4 hours down to Paducah City Limits.

Looks like it might take me an hour just to park!

Larry, do you have any repo'd helicopters at the bank?   Or maybe an old ambulance?  :D
Title: Re: Paducah BBQ Fest Shopping List
Post by: KyNola on September 22, 2010, 08:13:25 PM
Was on site tonight.  All of the teams have already fired their smokers because they start serving lunch tomorrow and continue serving everyday and night until Saturday night.  Wish I could have gotten a pic of the hickory cloud.  As I texted STC, "almost brought a tear to my eye".

Once STC and Hal arrive tomorrow evening, I will let them report on the festivities.  A great movie line altered just a bit. "I love the smell of hickory in the morning".

So BLSH - you've been to Paducah!!!   ;D ;D ;D

Danged, I wish I'd done some more advanced planning.  I was in Hoptown yesterday - just another few miles, and I could have been in Paducah.  But then I'd have to go through Eddyville.   That gives me the creeps - I've been in the bowels of that prison.  It used to be a not too fun of a place.

Wonder if I can make up a trip to Hopkinsville tomorrow?  And pass the Pembroke exit, not notice it until I get to Paducah.  Of course then it will be about lunch time.  And what is good for lunch but barbecue.  Gotta eat before I turn around and "find" Hoptown.

We're ready to go!

Or I should say, MrsSTC is ready to go - I still have to pack.   That takes me about 4 minutes..

I do have the important stuff boxed up and already in the car.  Larry's box o' goodies.  CT, Soileau's and a healthy portion of the rare but wonderful Head Country Championship Rub!

I also have the necessary communication/photography apps/wires/gear for sharing the fun w/ everyone on the forum.

We just need to finalize our route through the Metro East cornfields, so I don't end up in Indiana.

STC is on the way!
Some of you may remember my story of scoring a great brisket from this guy on Saturday of last year's BBQ Fest because a storm was blowing in.  Honest to God the best brisket I have ever eaten.  By a sheer stroke of luck, guess who is set up right outside the door of the condo we're staying in?  Yep, that would be Lenny the brisket smoker.  Dude looks just like Guy Fieri!

Checking in...

We're here and alive.   Had Lenny's brisket sammies and some cajun corn on the cob for dinner last night.  Fantastic!

Had a few beers with Larry...   ::)

I think we got to bed around 2AM.

Food booths are opening up as we speak..   BBQ Breakfast!

Caney my friend the reason is staring you right in the face. Our boys are in trouble they will need some experience and guidance (Probably some money to get out of jail too!!) You better get right up there and ensure their safety. Well not so much the boys but them lovely wives will need a manly escort while the boys are playing.
