Title: Bradley Forum Christmas Gift Exchange II
Post by: classicrockgriller on September 30, 2010, 09:53:16 AM
Last year we did a Christmas gift exchange on a volunteer basis.

It was a blast and it that time of the year to DO IT AGAIN!

If you are new and not sure what this is about, read this thread.

http://forum.bradleysmoker.com/index.php?topic=11877.0

Here is the thread where the gifts were posted.

http://forum.bradleysmoker.com/index.php?topic=12880.0

Chris (10.5) has agreed to once again be in charge of the info.

We are using $25 as a minimun (with shipping) as the dollar amount.

We will again keep it cost effective so it will be like last year, Us to US, Canada to Canada,

UK to UK, etc.

The cutt-off date to be included in the gift exchange is Sunday nite (midnite) November 14th.

You need to have your present shipped out by Friday, December 3rd.

So if you want to play or have a comment or question, post it here, but PM

Chris your NAME and complete address that you want your present sent.

Don't miss out on the FUN!

Classicrockgriller
Chili Head
FLBentRider
KevinG
Squirtthecat
Mikeradio
Nepasmoker

Still building the list so send your info via PM to me. I just went back and looked at all of the gifts that were exchanged last year. What a blast!! Are we going to do the same thing again this year and say send what you want but the things you can find in your area are really cool??

So I guess the two instigators CRG and 10.5 aren't playing  ;D

Sounds like a plan for something in the area, but my selection is a little weak out here. May have to substitute something other than smoking stuff.

QuoteWe are using $25 as a minimun (with shipping) as the dollar amount.

Did you mean minimum or maximum. The including shipping threw me off since it makes it sound like a 'maximum".

With the state of the economy and not knowing everyone's situation. The $25 amount is a ballpark figure including shipping. The idea of this is to have fun. We are trying to make it so CRG don't go spend $60 on a gift for you and I send him a $20 gift. Then he feels slighted and complains and it takes the fun out of this. It is just a guideline to try and keep everyone in the same ballpark.  If that makes any sense.

After a nap and sometime this evening I will get all of the PM's and address logged and then will make up an updated list of everyone that's in so far! Please bear with me I have about 3 or 4 folders with all of the information and lists of whos in , who is in the US and who is in Canada. Now before I get asked. We try to keep the folks in Canada in a separate group for their benefit. 1 So they actually get their gift and 2 So they don't have to deal with customs and any import fee's. Unless notified otherwise that is the way the cookie will crumble as I have been informed by CRG. This is his rodeo I'm just the scorekeeper.

From the US to Canada if you make out the customs declarations as a gift there is no duties and it gets here fairly fast for Canada Post. I receive lots of stuff from our neighbors to the south that way.

Sonny,
Will it be everyone in the same hat or separate hats? Your call. I am sure everyone has a voice in this. What do you guys think? Everyone in the same hat or try to keep shipping and any extra costs down? It really doesn't matter to me I will still be doing the same thing, drawing names.

For me, evreybody in the same hat could be fun.

The reason is that, it's a good chance for us to get stuff that is difficult for us to get on the Canadian side of the border & us we can send you guys in the States stuff you can't find.

Anyway you guys decide to do it, it will be a lot of fun!  ;D

I think we went thru the thoughts on this last year.

I don't want to be the one that says US can't ship to Canada or vice versa.

I really think is was about the cost of shipping.

I will re-read the posts from last year and will report the findings.

I'm game with anything that is decided but this summer I spent a month traveling through BC and Yukon on our way to Alaska.  When I tried to mail postcards to my 5 Grandchildren I found out that it would cost $1.08 Canadian/USD to mail ONE postcard.  Waited till I got into Alaska to mail the postcards at about $0.35 each.

I only mention this cause our Canadian friends might get the short end of the stick  ???

I think postage could be an issue.  It depends on package size and weight.  Did a little checking on the USPS site using British Columbia as the destination, and checking rates for small packages.  Here's the kicker - small packages are very limited in allowed weight and size and staying within first class rates (there are no cheapo rates to Canada from the US, like third class, etc.).  Here are the limits:

241.242 Dimensions — Other Than Rolls
Packages (small packets) other than rolls must be within the following dimensions:

Maximum length: 24 inches. Length is the longest dimension.
Maximum length, height, and depth (thickness) combined: 36 inches.
Minimum size: Large enough to accommodate the postage, address, customs form, and other required elements on the address side.

and rates in USD:
16 oz:  5.01
32 oz   8.93
48 oz   12.85
64 oz   16.77

Go above that and you are into "large package" (over 64 oz or ANY dimension over 12" ???)  where a 3lb 12" x 12" x 18" package starts at $23.50 US and goes up, 5 lb same dimensions starts at $27.00 US.

ref:
http://postcalc.usps.gov/
http://pe.usps.com/text/Imm/ce_003.htm#ep2041503

Checked UPS for the same 3 & 5 lb package ... for 3 lb, standard , 10 days from me to postal code V5Z 2M9 (Vancouver) is  $18.55 US,  5 lbs is $20.62 US.  The next step up in service is well over $100.00 at the 3 lb size.

Let's wait and see what everyone else thinks though.

The Canadian Postal rates do suck but we up here are sort of use to them.
I do cross the line to Washington State every once in a while to mail stuff.
Maybe it is best to keep Canada within Canada even though it hurts to say
that. I would love to get some of the rubs and stuff you have down there that
we cannot get up here.

Well, perhaps we can do something like that another time...

"Operation Rub some Canadian Butt"

or

"Let's help our Canadian brothers get Sauced"

Some kind of mass shipment(s) to a mail drop this side of the border, and one of your 'rum runners' can come get it, and distribute across the North.   Like Q did with the CT haul.

I sent a 4.5 pound box of stuff to Monty and it was almost ridiculous what it cost to ship.  (not that I minded - we were horsetrading - so I knew it would be a little pricey)

So are these exchages going from person A gets person B and person B then gets person A, or is it Person A can get person B and person B can get person C?

Kevin that is the fun part in this whole thing. YOU the receiver of the gift have NO IDEA who is sending you your gift until it arrives. You only know who you have to send a gift to.

I'm in. I really enjoyed the cheese I got last year but I did notice that the shipping to Canada probably cost more than the cheese. While I appreciated the gift it might make more sense to keep it CA-CA & US-US etc.
When I sent my gift I found I got more bang for my buck to order from Yard & Pool & have them drop ship. It wasn't as much of a personal gift as some got but I hoped it was enjoyed.

I started rounding things up for my gift recipient. I came across this little three pack of sauces. I had it sitting on the stove when my 11yr old son walked around the corner and exclaimed " Oh Cool you got me some more hot sauces Dad!! When can I try them?" He looked at the bottles and said "Oh wait only one of them is a hot sauce" I thought I would share what my recipient was going to get.

And a close up for better clarity on what each bottle says. My son is correct only one of them says that it IS a hot sauce!! ;D

Chris called me on his way to work tonite and wanted me to post that

He will do the drawing tomorrow and START sending out the pm's as to

who you got over the next couple of days. Last year we had 30 and this

year we have 50 so it is gonna take a few days to get all the info out.

Don't get nervous if you don't get a pm from Him for a cpl of days.

He said He will make a Post when he finishes so that then if you haven't

recieved a name as to who you are sending the gift to, He will get it

straighten out then.

Also I know alot of people has already gather up what they are going

to send. Don't get too quick on the trigger sending out your gift. This

is a Christmas Exchange and not a Thanksgiving Exchange. ;D

TRY to wait untill after the US Thanksgiving (the 25th) to send your Gift,

but PLEASE have it sent by the 3rd of December.

A Big "THANKS" to everyone who signed up to participate in the exchange.

50 is an AWESOME # and hope We do better next Year.

Also a BIG Thanks to Chris for being the "Responsible" person with all the info.

You the Man Chris!

Gus not really.

If you looked at last year's Thread the opening of gifts was over several weeks.

Last year we used the first part of December to mail out gifts so that it would

reach the person we were sending it to early part of December and not interfer

with their "Home" Christmas.

It doesn't have to be BBQ/Smoker related. If your region is Noted for something special .......

That would make a great gift.

Last year we have a variety of gifts given.

What we are known for here in Texas, the Post Office wouldn't let me ship!

They have a big sign on the Door ......... NO BULL$H*T Allowed in Priority Shipping Boxes.

I do believe I have sent everyone that is listed as being in the Exchange a PM with the name and address of the individual that they are to send a gift to. Let the fun BEGIN!!

If you didn't get a PM for some reason let me know and I will send it to you again. I have a master copy printed out and hand written.

Should I be concerned about having a poster with no posts that registered on Nov 9th, and was active on the 10th and hasn't been back yet?  I actually have no problem sending this person something but I would hate for whomever he/she has to not get anything.

I guess in the spirit of Christmas it is just trusting the person will do what is best.

I happen to know that that individual will in fact be sending out a gift. If he doesn't I know of at least 3 of his buddies that will ensure that he does. Send your gift and wait for the person who has your name to send you yours. I am pretty sure there isn't anyone matched to send each other a gift.

I went and picked up all my stuff to send out this morning.

I had to go by the doctors office to have my arm ck'd out, seems I have a small blood clot just above where he cut my hand.  He said nothing to worry about, I just need to take it easy this weekend.  I didn't tell him I had a few things to smoke in my Bradley and thought it best no to.   ;)

So low and slow here I come, while smoking I'll sit back and take it easy!!!   :D

CRG - How close did everyone hold to the $25 limit last year do you suppose? I'm having a hard time not exceeding that, and I never now how things will be perceived. I and I know you, from previous posts, enjoy the giving part. Worst come to worst, I'll do the math and keep the excess for myself. Have a great and restful Thanksgiving.

If you ship out early enough, you don't have to use the priority mail boxes and can ship

parcel post and it will get there in 5 days instead of 3 and save some $ on the shipping.

I am close or a tad over on the limit and so I will ship parcel post.

Just be comfortable in what you send, and be Happy with what you get.

Last year, I had Hady (lives in Jordan). I kept His gift close to the $25 limit,

but I sent his Wife and Daughter some American Goodies. His Daughter sent

me a BIG thank you! It was worth every penny!

The reason the forum is slow is because Santa is checking this forum and checking it twice looking to see who's naught and nice!!!
This make's him laugh so hard at the roasting and ribbing of members and the double entendres contained here that he keeps falling out of his ergonomic red velvet office chair and the elves have to pull his pipe out of his throat and get him seated again for the thousandth time just today.

Ray...a Secret Santa to someone....shhhhh!!

I am going to have to mail my package out later today.  I figure that it will not move very far tomorrow on Thanksgiving.  I doubt that it will make it to the destination by Saturday so looking for a Monday or Tuesday delivery.  The reason is that I will be traveling next week and don't want to forget to mail it.

it was as cheap to send in one of the priority boxes.

Well since the gifts have started to arrive at their destination. Sonny and I decided to open the "I Got It" Thread early so if you got your gift you can post a pic and tell who the sender is. That way we can match up the bad gift givers for next year HEHEHE

I checked my mailbox 3 times yesterday and never got any mail.

I was getting ready to leave and I went to put something in Wifey's car

and postman had put a box in her car. It was COLD!

I think it might be from my Christmas exchange bro.

Will open it when I come back on Friday.

I think this is the proper place for this one.

Cletus is passing by Billy Bob's hay barn one day when, through a gap in the door, he sees Billy Bob doing a slow and sensual striptease in front of an old green John Deere.

Buttocks clenched, he performs a slow pirouette, and gently slides off first the right strap of his overalls, followed by the left.  He then hunches his shoulders forward and in a classic striptease move, lets his overalls fall down to his hips, revealing a torn and frayed plaid shirt.  Then, grabbing both sides of his shirt, he rips it apart to reveal his stained T-shirt
underneath.  With a final flourish, he tears the T-shirt from his body, and hurls his baseball cap onto a pile of hay.

Having seen enough, Cletus rushes in and says, "What the heck are you doing, Billy Bob?"

"Jeez, Cletus, ya scared the bejeezers out of me," says an obviously embarrassed Billy Bob.  "But me'n the Ol' Lady been havin trouble lately in the bedroom d'partment, and the therapist suggested I do 'something sexy to a tractor'."

I was at the kitchen sink cleaning up my mess last night and the big brown truck came down my lane and turned around at the end then stopped at the walk got outta the truck with a big ole box and brought it up to the porch. Before I could get my hands dried he was back in the truck and sped away, it was 7:50 P.M. maybe he was in a hurry.

When I got the box in the house I noticed it was addressed to the wife.  :-[

I got a nice gift from KevinG yesterday.  I posted pics in the chat room last night but here they are again for the poor unfortunate souls that might have missed them.

I think it was the original prototype for the Bradley 6 rack unit.  It came with sandalwood pucks.

Nice quality but I had a dickens of a time getting the chuck roast in there.

At least this is one smoker I can use in the kitchen.  It's smoking now as I type this!

Gift recieved from kinyo. Thank you very much. I can always use maple syrup which is very expensive here. And the spices and steak spice will work real nice on my BBQ'd meats. I will post a pic as soon as I can.

You have no Idea how much information I have about gifts. Who is sending theirs late, Who sent theirs, Tracking Numbers to different gifts, Who has theirs but hasn't posted yet because they don't know who sent it and need to know. Which gift is on back order Etc... Yes there is some behind the scenes action happening.
