Title: New Bradley Smoker
Post by: Bradley (Head Office) on January 15, 2012, 09:27:12 AM

Hello Everyone

We took a lot of the comments and suggestions from our forum members and customers (Thank You)and made a few changes to the smoker design.

Here are a few of the changes:
1. New Stainless Steel Interior.
2. New Rack supports keep racks from tipping over when pulled out.
3. Heat control moved to Smoke Generator which will eliminate moisture damage to switch.
4. Improved Front Face Plate.
5. Improved Electronic components
6. Extra large front feet for added support and stability.
7. Generator has removable side panel for ease of cleaning and preventative maintenance.

Dam. Hate it that mine is still going strong with no problems for almost 3 years now. Other than 1 bad micro switch.
One question, anyone know why a larger wattage element wasn't used. I would assume that most of us can do without a fan and PID buy would love/benefit from more heat.

It probably would have raised the price too high to make it competitive to other brands that are currently around the same price.  A higher wattage heating element would need a more heavy duty temp controller and maybe a few other things.  I guess Bradley feels that enough owners are satisfied with the 500W. I would have liked for them to have added a few things but with the mods I've done to my OBS I'm happy with what I have now.

I believe the reason that a larger heating element was not implemented was probably do to Government standards. Not only does Bradley have to pass all of the UL listing standards and the Canadian equivalent. They have to get certification from ALL of the countries that Bradley Smokers are sold in. So if one country says NO it doesn't meet our standards the whole thing has to go back to the drawing board so it can pass the testing in all of the countries at the same time.

The new version of the OBS ALMOST makes me want to get one. I will stick with my Digitals though for now

OK jokes are over here some info asked earlier in this topic;

YES YOU CAN COLD SMOKING EXACTLY LIKE THE BLACK ONE BTIS1

No sensor plug and or cable needed. You need to plug the tower into smoke generator and turning on the dial  to start the element or plugging it into a pid. I guess the pid is the only option if you want to turn off the smoke generator after the smoke is applied because, if you turn off the smoke generator it turn off the element. But without pid, it's still low medium high knob that your turn instead of sliding this time.

The front feet look more stable at least it is more stable than my BTIS1.
I did not see how to open the smoke generator easier than the other but i did not take too much time on it.

The interior has improve. Looks nicer but still the same cheap plastic on top and bottom of the door. Don't let the draw fooling you.

The back wall outside still looks the same. Still too thin to support the fan.

The main difference seems to be the racks support. A kind of rail on top and bottom that you insert the rack in the middle of the support so there is a rail on top and bottom of each racks. So somebody has to say Cogent he must redesign his rack kits lol! And the space between the V-tray and the lowest rack seems to be a bit smaller too so if you buy to mod check this out before drilling the holes for the fan.

So so far it's about it. So if more info needed just ask Toker.

Well can you still use a cold smoke box?  If you set it lower and use the hose how will the tower still work? Or do you mean to use ice when cold smoking?
Title: Re: New Bradley Smoker
Post by: Toker on January 18, 2012, 07:23:09 PM
If you don't turn on the big knob, the element won't turn on. Only the smoke generator will.  It mean that this smoke generator works exactly the same as the old original excepted for one thing, as soon as you turn it on the smoke generator start i mean, if you want to, you can just turn on the smoke generator for cold smoke but unfortunately, you can not turn on only the element cause the element does not start if the smoke generator is not on and the minute it is on it heat (smoke generator) That mean that the smoke generator must stay on the whole smoke even if you don't need it anymore unless you plug the tower into a pid and not into the smoke generator. And yes, you can still attach a cold smoke adaptor for cold smoke.

Well hope you enjoy it! But think I'll stick to my OBS and PID. Maybe wait for the new and improved. Really I don't see any significant changes to make me want one. The new front legs is the only mechanical improvement I see. And i've already done it, The SS inside we'll have to wait and see how it goes. But I hope it does better for the ones who get it.
Title: Re: New Bradley Smoker
Post by: Toker on January 18, 2012, 08:02:01 PM
Don't forget, no more circuit board on the faceplate. For me that is the main improvement but yes, if your is still good to go, you can wait. No big deal but for the door. BTW, we still need a pid because this is no digital, only low, medium, high. So the pid is still required. Oh yeah, i forgot, there is no round button marked fuse on it like the old one (on smoke gen i mean).
Title: Re: New Bradley Smoker
Post by: Habanero Smoker on January 19, 2012, 01:47:46 AM
That is very generous of Bradley.

I'm not sure if I like the fact that you can not turn the generator off. So if I understand you previous post, if you are cold smoking you don't need to have the cabinet plugged into the back of the generator, for the generator to work.

It does look like the power indicator light for the element is larger, to make it easier to see when the temperature is lowered. I would be interested in what are the improved electronics.

With all I said I for got to say GOOD SHOW BRADLEY! Very nice thing for a man who loves the company so much. While I may not be that dedicated, I do love my Bradley also! Remember I am an older guy and tend to complain.LOL I love the Original set up though and guess I was just a little disappointed you didn't incorporate a few of the mods. But like others I really don't mind doing it. I just feel there is a market for a high end unit that incorporated them all and maybe sub some metal for some of the breaking plastic parts. I my self can't complain as I haven't had any problems. But if and when you do create such a model I'll try to be first in line. Toker can't think of any one that deserves it more. Just keep smoking and a posting.
Title: Re: New Bradley Smoker
Post by: Toker on January 19, 2012, 10:32:34 AM
Habs, you can turn it on and off but if you turn it off, the element turn off at the same time. Must be due cause of the circuit board is now out of the tower. Ex, if you plug the tower directly into the wall the tower become like a DBS no controller to controll it so you need a pid if you want to controll the element only.

No, you don't need the tower be attached to activate the smoke gen. The smoke gen works exactly like it always worked with on/off switch. Just a big knob for the element that you can turn on/off for hot or cold smoke.

And the indicator light is the same, just not on the tower anymore. The advance button is now round instead of square. And there is no round fuse button anymore. They probably put it inside don't know.

P.S. i just opened the back wall and it is exactly like the black one.

Hmm...I would have thought that one of the improvements would be to make it easier to check/change the fuses.  With the OBS you have to remove a dozen or so screws to gain access to the inline fuse that many owners don't even know is there.  It looks like they moved the easy access fuse on the SG and put it somewhere not so easy.
Title: Re: New Bradley Smoker
Post by: Toker on January 19, 2012, 09:38:27 PM
Sorry Ted, i think you are mistaking 2 diferents fuses. The inline fuse on the back of the tower is still there at the same place no change, me, i was talking about the fuse inside the smoke generator not the inline fuse. It mean that the black one (former OBS)  has 2 fuses. The one i talk about never been on the back of the tower.

If i did not understood your post, please forgive me don't know pretty much about the fuse inside the smoke generator.

Great! now please tell me why is there a 3RD pin on each side to sit the V_tray on? The third pin i talk about is a bit higher than the 2 others. If you look at it closely, it looks like a V updide down. Remember to put the V_tray like a V and not upside down for safety.

And pay attention to the new racks if you add more. The rail does not measure the same, they are like double.

I like the few changes that were made, and can't wait to fire her up. I mean cook something. The whole fire thing didn't work to well for me last time. Haha. If you ever add a 2ND elements, you need to add a 2ND of it too with the orange cord (fuse) and it means to drill a 2ND holes next to the first if or when you have a pid. The good news with this new OBS, there is no face plate to passby, only plug the element into the pid.

Looks like those new brackets will make it easier for the guys who flip extra racks over to hold larger loads of jerky..  Or if you need an extra 1/2 inch or so of clearance.
Title: Re: New Bradley Smoker

But for those who add them let's say (Scott's Place way) it will make them a bit harder to add because the wood template doesn't fit anymore with the new racks supports.

Are you talking about having to add a second high temp sensor when running two elements?  That is not necessary.  I'm running two elements on my OBS and have just the one original high temp sensor wired in series with both elements.  Absolutely no need for two sensors.

I even removed the inline fuse and replaced it with one on the SG box where Bradley should have put it in the first place instead of having to remove 50 screws to check for a blown fuse.

Ted

The sensor in the back of the OBS (or the new one) that Toker is referring to is actually a thermal cut off. Basically if it reaches a certain temp if cuts power to the circuit until it cools down than it resets itself. The fuse that is mounted on the backside of the thermal cut off which you are referring to is not an electrical fuse, it's a thermal fuse. It acts as a secondary safety. If it reaches a certain temp it blows and cuts power to the circuit.

The main fuse in the smoke generator is the electrical fuse in case of a short in one of the circuits.

The reason Toker sets his up the way he does is because he wants the most safety devices he can have as he uses his indoors due to being physically unable to get outside to use it.

Referring to the new temp dial. Its not just low Med and high is it? I would assume that it spins not clicks
And you increase or decrease the temp by how much you rotate the dial is that right? Also I'm wondering if the improved electronics is to try to hold a more steady temp. Still love my obs. I have made no mods except to put in a suncast cabinet. Every time I use it I like it more. Getting ready to do some jerky for the first time. Have some venison roasts in the freezer that need to be smoked up. Congrats on the smoker toker!

You are right the heat increase decrease depending how you turn the big knob but yes it's low medium high like your black one instead of sliding a slider back from left to right, it's a big clock wise knob. Don't think it change anything about steady temp but i always use my smokers with my pid now so who knows...

If you ever add a 2ND elements, you need to add a 2ND of it too with the orange cord (fuse) and it means to drill a 2ND holes next to the first if or when you have a pid.

I don't want to speak for Ted, but I believe he's saying that with his TedEBear method of installing dual elements in series there's no need for dual high temp senors or inline fuses.  If either one is triggered, both elements get shut down.  I used his method, but left the inline fuse in and have had no problems.  His method is probably the simplest way to install dual elements.  You just understand that if the circuit is broken, both elements are out of commission.  In case of exceeding high temp, that ain't a bad thing.  Some see that as a detriment.  To me, it was just a trade off for simplicity.
