Hey everyone from the west coast I have a question for you all. I am looking at smoking 2 pork shoulders on Thursday for a gathering I am doing. However, I need a little advice on the rub. Where I am getting stuck is that I want to know what you prefer for pulled pork rubs. The two choices I am wanting to use right now is the BBQ Pulled Pork rub you can buy at WinCo foods in the bulk foods section or Jans Rub (Which I have not made before but was considering on making a batch). I was curious if people had had both and if they prefer one over the other. If not, I am thinking of going with the WinCo rub just because its already made and I know how the end product will be.
Since I'm from the "west coast" of the Missouri River, I feel I can respond. You cannot go wrong with Jan's rub.
Nobody doesn't like Jan's Rub. And, as an additional benefit, you'll become known as "the guy who makes that really great rub instead of using that store-bought junk."
jans rub is great , so is gunpowder that was cracked by 10.5
3 tablespoons Chili Powder
2 ½ tablespoons Paprika
2 tablespoons Salt
2 tablespoons Garlic Powder
1 tablespoon Ground Black Pepper
1 tablespoon Onion Powder
1/2 tablespoon Ground Cayenne Pepper
1 tablespoon Ground Chipotle Chili Pepper
1 tablespoon Ground Oregano
1 tablespoon Ground Thyme
2 tablespoon Wyler's Chicken bouillon granules (Grind to a powder with Spice Grinder or Mortar and Pestle)
2 tablespoon Celery Salt
3 tablespoon Accent Flavor Enhancer
I also add in 1 1/2 tablespoon of ground mustard
i would recommend one of the above two
I have not tried Jan's yet, but Iceman's Oinker rub is great.
I haven't tried either, but my go to rub for butts is:
The Renowned Mr. Brown Barbecued Pork Butt
1/4 cup Black Pepper, fresh cracked
1/4 cup Paprika
1 /4 cup Turbinado Sugar or Brown Sugar
2 Tbsp. Salt, Kosher
2 tsp. Mustard, dry
1 tsp. Cayenne pepper
(Makes enough for one 6 - 8 lb. Boston Butt)
