Title: Where did all the oldtimers go?
Post by: Wildcat on May 22, 2015, 06:01:28 PM
Did you guys fall off the planet the last time we sling shotted around the sun? Seems like there are only 5 or 6 that are still posting and even those do not post as much.

Yeah I have been so busy myself. Work all week, work all weekend cleaning up the property. My dad left a huge mess and I have to clean it up. We have a 30x 60 metal clad shop that we could barely walk threw. Now it is getting close to empty. I haven't smoked anything in over a year. But yeah All the regulars are absent lately.

Glad your getting things together. Been rather busy myself. Have not done anything overnight in a while, but have done turkey, ribs,  chicken and steaks fairy regular. Got company coming over this afternoon and have five 16 plus ounce ribeye steaks ready for the Davy Crocket.

Heh, where did they all go?  They got tired of the BS from the "experts".  That's where they went.  Bradley has a Facebook page that is more active than the Forum.  Bradley Smoker Fan Club.  It's a closed group so you have to be admitted.  I'm an admin on that page as well so let me know and I will be sure to admit you.

Wow! This is the first I have heard of it. How long has this been going on?

I stop in once in a while. But since my stomach surgery last Sept. I have not been smoking very much. Trying to get it worked back into my very small limited diet. I have done a couple small racks of ribs and a small pork but but that is about it. I do go the the Facebook group also but since I have been not smoking much do not even post there as much as I normally would.

I would hate to have stomach surgery. Gall bladder removal was bad enough. I now have to limit my grease intake or pay the price.

Pens -  How did you find out about the facebook group? Seems like I somehow failed to get the memo.

I'm still kick'n sort of. According to Miss Ann I'm only an itchy trigger finger away from even that!  :o  ;D Just been so busy with trying to build the new place and all. No more trips across the pond to goof off till I get this one built. :'( I don't do the facebook thing but I think KyNola is on to something about why the others have been hanging out elsewhere.
Good to hear from you guys though. Hope all is well for everyone.  :)

There are quite a few users at the Facebook site. Not sure who actually started it but I have been on there for quite a while. Since I'm on Facebook doing a few other things anyway its quick to see what is going on while there. But I almost always check on here as well a few times each week.
I'm a member of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club which is an international motorcycle club for firefighters. Many of the Chapters both from the US, Canada and international have pages on Facebook so I spend a lot of time there as well as the ABATE of PA motorcycle pages. Unfortunately my back problems have not gone away as expected from losing almost 100 pounds. So I have not been able to ride any this year, I'm seriously considering selling my two motorcycles and getting a trike which will be much easier on my back and still allow me to get out there and ride.
Pat.... Miss Ann will keep you busy, I'm sure of that. :D
Wildcat... I had my gall bladder out a few years ago and it was much easier than the major surgery with the stomach. But now that I'm getting back to eating most foods again, just a tiny portion though, I'm happy I did it. I had to do it because my diabetes was so bad it was causing kidney damage and this was the only way to try to stay off dialysis. I had hoped once the surgery was over my insulin use would have stopped like many others who had the surgery had done. But no not for me, I'm still on insulin much lower doses and the doctor says maybe with more time I can still get off it, but I'm doubting it. The fact I'm off the high concentrated insulin and using normal insulin is a big plus.

Sure hate that your having so much med problems Pens.

Glad your back home Pat. You building a new place in the same town?

I hate using facebook myself but most of my family do nothing but facebook so I use it. Not exactly sure what I am doing sometimes. Would rather talk or text.

Since my friend Larry offered I may give it a try if I can figure out how. Shoot for all I know I might be one of the reasons some of them go there instead of the forum.

I'm cooking more often with charcoal, pellets and gas. I monitor the site to see is someone needs help, and for the recipe site. I've notice a decline starting sometime back. From my perspective, there are 2 or 3 "experts" that would create a hostile environment on the forum, and behind the scenes; towards and against anyone who express an alternate opinion, or would point out unsafe food practices, major mistakes etc. Several months ago, one sent me a halfhearted apology for his behavior over the years. Also there seems to be covert and some overt recruiting members from the site to other forums.

Hi Habs. I have noticed your posts and personally pay close attention to your input. Most of what I have learned on this forum has been from you, KyNola, Iceman, Pensrock, and several other folks. There are some variable methods posted that work just fine but some of the folks posting get their hackles up because they think theirs is the only way it should be done. Never could see the sense in it. I personally love how you explain the science behind it. It helps me to understand things a lot more. I have seen a couple of folks mistakenly take some of your explanations of what was going on as an attack on methods they and others were using. I understood their views and also understood they were simply not understanding what you were trying to explain.

I too have a long ago history with a few of the oldtimers. I suspect some of the folks get upset when I express my opinion on the actual need to FTC butts. Not a major issue, but I'm sure some take offense if I express my views. The way I see it, differing views can add to the learning experience. Folks can try the various methods and choose what works for them.

By the way - I absolutely love your Syracuse potatoes.

I am an avid follower of six meat related forums.  The loss of posts by the qualified members is in general decline but that is true in many volunteer based activities.  Aging and health issues are understandable but it is a real PITA when personalities and ego get involved.  I'm a retired lawyer living in a small rural community.  When folks come to me for legal advice because they are in the middle of a community controversy, I refuse and remind them to think community first and park their self interest at home.

Here is the scoop on the Facebook Page "Bradley Smoker Fan Club".  It is a simply a group mostly of folks who own a Bradley, including Wade Bradley.  I don't know if it is the "official" FB page of Bradley or not.  It is a "closed group" and members have to be admitted to prevent a constant barrage of spam and they still sneak in from time to time.  When it occurs the individual is permanently banned from the Group.  No different than when you initially joined the Forum.  There are currently 1,921 members from all over the world, 23 of them new, 8 waiting to be admitted so the Group is not for the "chosen few".

If you would like to be added to the Group please send me a PM message on this Forum that gives your complete name on Facebook and something on your FB page to let me know I am adding the correct person and not someone else with your same name.

Hope this information clears up any questions or concerns about the page.

Larry,

At this point in time I barely know enough about facebook to set up my page (probably not properly nor securely) and do not really trust it. I really do not want to intentionally give access to my and my family's posts to a lot of people that I do not know. I personally do not put anything on it that I am not willing to share with the world, but some of my friends and family do which shows up on my page sometimes. Until I feel more secure with facebook I think I will pass on your kind offer. I still have concerns about why I have, until now, been kept in the dark about this. I thank you my friend for telling me about it.

Rick

I really enjoyed this forum when I joined about 3 years ago, kind of sad it has dwindled as far as a lot of the regulars go. I still show up 7check posts out etc once in a while.

beefmann, I'm not sure if you can see much as it is a closed group (I'm not a member). Bradley also looks like it has an official "community FB page" I'm not sure if the fan club page is.

Beefman, join the grop then if you want to leave the group.  Frankly I prefer the forum to the group because there is more info in the meaningful posts.

Am I an oldtimer?

I don't post a lot anymore, but read here daily.  Don't use the smoker a lot either, since to be worthwhile, I need to smoke enough for leftovers, and since I am home most of the day every day, leftovers always call out to me until they are no longer able (because they have been eaten).

Sadly, they're both waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge.  So far I have stuck to my plan of not getting any more pets until I have a human companion, but it's getting more and more difficult...kitten and puppy pictures are just too dang cute.

I check this site every day and was wondering where did every one go. I never knew there was a Facebook group and unfortunately I am not on Facebook or even have  a cell phone, (wife does but I don't use it). I miss a lot of the old timers knowledge and help when it comes to smoking.

It is hard for me to understand how ego's get in the way here. If someone is looking for a recipe or needs help with a problem and someone suggests something, it does not mean it is the only way to do it. It means that is what has worked for them. Does not make it right or wrong. As proven over time there are many ways to do things, it is what ever works best for you. Again can't believe ego's are that big.

I have recommended this site to many of my friends because of all the help and ideas I have gotten over the years and to see it dwindle does suck. I would hope (and don't know if possible) that somehow or some one could get the members to come back and make this the great forum that it has been in the past. That way anyone who is into smoking would benefit not just a select few who are in a group.
Isn't the intent of a forum to help people out??  If it was not for the Facebook forum I would HOPE that many of the members would still be here contributing to the new members looking for answers!

Just a little temptation. With a pup like this you'd be irresistable

Noticed a couple of months back it is 10 years since I bought my BS (and joined the forum), the early years were brilliant and I owe most of what I know to the "old timers" a number of whom haven't visited the forum for a long while now. I do still pop by most days and always look for and listen to what Habs, TP5, Wildcat, iceman, KyNola, pensrock and a handful of others have to say. However the sense of camaraderie and friendship has diminished a lot over time, perhaps the forum has been a victim of it's own success as the years have passed? Also agree with comments from Habs and some others on this topic.

My BS is still going strong and I am still probably averaging maybe 12 - 15 smokes a year, lot less adventurous nowadays but simply don't get the time to do as much as I would like. From a forum point of view I do miss "olden times"... a phrase my 14 year old son delights in using as in "Dad, what was the fishing like in olden times when you were a boy!"  >:( 8) :)

Best wishes to all, oldtimer or new!  :)

I know I miss reading the posts from all the "oldtimers"

I was out with a couple of surgeries & when I checked in to the forum, I hardly knew any one posting.

I owe everything I know about smoking to the "oldtimers". I knew nothing about smoking when I bought my Bradley and promptly joined this forum. (I still don't know half what most of them know)

I knew I could always come here for advice & to talk about smoking. The long time posters just made me feel at home. Always friendly.

It just isn't the same now. I would hope they would come back. Like Widcat, I don't do facebook.

To everyone who replied on this thread - Thank you. I learned a little and am happy to see that all of you folks care about keeping the guys and gals that have been so helpful for so many years around. Personally it saddens me to think that so many of us had such egos as to cause people to break up into their own little clans. I have always looked upon this forum as another family that involved people from all walks of life and from around the whole world brought together by a love or fantasy of preparing great food for personal consumption. This forum has/had many very knowledgeable cooks, chefs, and other experts that provided a lot of knowledge to anyone who wanted it. Until the breakup I always thought that these knowledgeable folks all wanted one thing - to share their knowledge and experience with others (be they trained chefs or beginners). I am also confident that Bradley enabled this forum for that very purpose which, in turn, should have been beneficial to their sales. I purchased my Bradley because of what I read on these forums back when I retired. I hope all who are still on here stay a part of this forum. I fully understand not having time sometimes to be real active but one would be surprised at how a once in a while contribution can help someone in need.

I used to spend hours nearly each day surfing various forums.  It says at the top of the page that I've spent over 24 days on this forum alone. I've been trying to cut back on that and do more productive things with my time.  I'll stop by here maybe once a month but that's about it.  I don't do FB.

Too funny Tiny!

I have 198 days... I guess I need a life too!  :D ;D ;D

I don't do face book and have never left. I've thought about it because of some of the shenanigans but pretty much check in every day. I haven't posted much of late partly due to a crazy schedule at home and work but also partly because of stuff on the forum that I won't get into.

The bottom line is this forum is a fantastic resource and would be a shame to see the activity continue to dwindle.

Like I said I've never left, just sat in the corner with my hard over my mouth for a while.  ;D ;D ;D

Good to hear from you Wildcat. I hope all is well. ;)

I suspect if you were to stay logged in your clock would keep going even while your computer is off. Just like the ranking, I do not think this is an effective measure of contribution.
Title: Re: Where did all the oldtimers go?

It isn't.  It's just a stat.  I'll say it again, my comment "rookies" was solely a joke.

The total logged in time is only calculated by giving up to 15 minutes, each time the front page of the forum is accessed...if you hit the front page sooner than 15 minutes after the previous time, the clock is reset.  The only time I ever physically log in is when my computer loses it's mind, otherwise I'm auto-logged in every time I visit....and I never click the logout link.

Still check the posts. Haven't posted for a while. Last year was lost due to health but am started smoking again. Unicorn meat. 7 racks of ribs last Friday for boat show gathering in grand marais and 5 racks the Friday before for friends headed into BWCA. Miss the old group that was always keeping the interest up.

I haven't smoked in months due to health reason's, thyroid cancer they will not operate do to a stroke we had a year ago, and I have COPD and CHF-(congestive heart failure) and blood thinners. Oh what fun this is. I will be doing some Wala Wala Onion salt around the first of July as I have 50lbs of onions on order. If health permits me and the wife will take a trip to England to see my grandson who is at a disabled children home working for school credit. With all the things going on, all airlines require a Doctors approval 72 hours before any international flight if you use a approved TSA POC (personal oxygen centrator) and if they don't like the report you don't fly.

Many forums change "attitudes" after a bit of time.  I usually don't much care for the shift.

Gafala - hope you're knee deep in good clear rough.  I hope that you get to go on your trip!  That would be awesome.  And a prayer or two or more will be run up the pole.

I check in when I can, Like others a new job has got me hopping. I had to spend 6 months in an Austin rent house with a spare SRG as my only means of outdoor cooking/smoking. Now that I'm back home I'm hoping to get back to more smoking and cooking. I'll try to post some cooks if I have any interesting ones.

I've been MIA a lot over the past year because I've been so busy working. Still smoking every days lunch on my Bradley and my clients still love it.

The old timers and lurkers here helped me so much and I still find little gems from the past threads.  I still read the forums when I can but most questions are better answered by others and my input isn't needed.

I'll try to get on the Facebook page soon.

I guess I'm not really one of the "oldtimers" but used to visit the forum at least once a day and really enjoyed my time here. Then a while back some "nonsense" started, which affected the "mood" of the forum and I decided to stay on the sidelines until the issue went away. I thought that was resolved when the main instigator resigned. However, based on the comments in reply 4, it appears the issue continues. Hopefully this will get resolved soon and the forum will get back to the welcoming and friendly place it once was.

That's the odd thing about forums. They can take a perfectly normal and socially fluent Adult and turn them into something resembling a teenager with a delicate ego. I see it all of the time on the forums I peruse. I am sure it will all be OK. There are a lot of great people here that are EXTREMELY helpful.    :)
It is a shame that the internet allows our conversations to become so impersonal that 99% of the disputes I have seen on Forums like this never would have happened if it was just a bunch of guys/gals sitting in a diner chewing the fat.
I wish it could be more like that!  :D

Tomorrow I am planning on smoking some pork butts - think it's been several months since I last used my bradley :'(
Had to double check my notes on what/how I did the last time :-\
Am I an old timer ? ? ? Don't know but am coming up on 10 years that I have been reading this forum.
Hope everyone is doing well.

Forgive me for I have sinned, I have not posted on the Bradley Forum or on the Facebook page in over two years. Two of our kids had kids and now the grandkids seem to take all my time away from work. Go figure. I still poke my nose in every now and then.

Well I am MOST definitely not an "old timer" but have been here for a short 2 years. I purchased my Bradley Smoker on a whim just after I retired, smoking always intrigued me and its something I always wanted to try. Now I'm hooked and love it. I read all 6 pages of this thread and would just like to say one thing. "THANK YOU" for all the advise and support whenever I asked a question. Being a rookie smoker I was often scratching my head, but knew that the guys here in this forum would always help and answer my questions, no matter how silly or trivial they may be. The advise that was offered guided me through any rough spot and made (still makes) smoking a joy and pleasure. Just knowing that expert advise and guidance is just a click away is so reassuring. Can't speak for anyone else but you guys here in this forum are exceptional and good people and it makes me proud to be a member of such a knowledgeable group. I've learned a great deal here and know I've just scratched the surface. So to all the regular, and not so regular members, I just want to say Thank You and hope you hang in there.

Just to toss my hat in.   I'm still cooking but mainly with my Big Easy SRG's, pellet SRG & my Rec Tec but my Bradley gets used but more for jerky, smoking seeds  and as a dehydrator for peppers.

Had issues with temps above 250 so I just keep it going for the lower temp stuff.

Still love it though and can't get rid of it.    I do stop by here 3 to 5 times a week just to see whats going on but spend most of my forum time on another site

It's been awhile since I've been active on the site--life got busy for a few years BUT I just retired so I hope to contribute to the forum again. My last smoke was some hot smoked coho and spring which I then canned. I use this to make salmon dip with cream cheese, onions  and fresh lime juice and pepper.

I haven't been here much myself but just received an email from West Coast Kansan. He isn't West Coast any more.
I still do a lot of smoking/grilling, usually 5-6 time a week or more but much of that is with other equipment even though I still think the Bradley provides more flavor in a shorter period of time.  I mostly use it for jerky, pistachios or cold smoking.
Last year I smoked 150lbs of pork for the USO and the Bradley was stuffed to the max along with my other equipment.  It still has a great capacity.

Nice to see a few of the old timers are still around. My BS is still going strong and used a couple of times a month. Latest is a large batch of pulled pork at the request of my eldest son who has just started university in Manchester (UK) and is missing home cooking!

He also requested Boston beans, another favourite for many years and they will be part of the food parcel we are delivering on Thursday.  ;)

I too have been absent for a long time. For the first several years after I got my first Bradley I would check in Daily. I still own two Bradley's which have both been upgraded to the 900W Heat element and PID. However a few years ago I got "The Good One" Charcoal smoker and have been hooked on it. Still use the Bradley from time to time and use recipes and knowledge I gained from this site to make fantastic smoked food. I just came back today because I needed the Pastrami recipe from the recipe site. Glad to see some of the old members are still around. I sure enjoyed this forum for many years. Will have to check out the Facebook site as well. Take care all and Happy Smoking!

I'm a member of both the forum and the facebook group.  The knowledge base is far superior here, people are friendlier here, and it's just my opinion but some of the people on the facebook group don't seem to be there for knowledge based exchanges rather merely ego stroking.

I have been AWOL for many years, life got busy with our business, hunting, fishing. Then we moved, and in 2014 we were blessed with GrandKids, never knew that the little ones would take up so much of our time. Our eldest met and married  girl with three girls and later that year they had a little boy. Our second and his partner had a little girl seven months before our grandson was born, in 2014 we went from no grand kids to 5.
Still smoking with my original Bradley smoker, with the original element in it. No repairs to the smoker. I use it 3-4 times a month right now, but it will start getting more use now that two of the boys also hunt and want to start making snack stiks and jerky with their venison.
Feels good to be back.

I don't think of myself as "an oldtimer", but I did used to spend more time here than I have in the last couple of years.  A 26 ft pontoon boat that we "camp" on a lot, a new black lab puppy and some health issues are reasons for my absence, but not legit ones.  I still use my Bradley a lot.  Cheese, HBB, sausages, eggs, steaks, chops, turkeys, pulled pork, pheasants, ducks and fish.  And I still must maintain an inventory of "jerky wafers" that some of you may remember me posting.  I don't do face book, but I've decided that I will spend more time here in the future.  Maybe even post now and then.  I do miss the friends I've made here and feel guilty about being silent for so long.....Ragweed
