Title: Recipe Site
Post by: Habanero Smoker on July 20, 2016, 01:28:24 AM
At this time it is unclear when or if the recipe site will be backup again. The only thing I can say for certain is that I can dispel the idea that the recipe site was taken down due to a fallout between partners. Trey was the sole owner of that site. Nor does it appear that the site was hacked. I hope personal difficulties are not the cause of the site shutting down, and there is another explanation. Many attempts have been made to contact Trey by phone and email, but so far none of these attempts have been successful. If he can be contacted, there is a very strong possibility that the site can be backup and running.

Back in January 2014, when it looked like the site was being shutdown then, Olds posted instructions on how to download the site. I lost my download when I either upgraded to Win. 8 or when I was upgrading to Win. 10. Did anyone download the site, and still have a copy of it?

Here is the post:
Smoker Site to go down.... (http://forum.bradleysmoker.com/index.php?topic=34298.msg398569#msg398569)

I'll will keep you updated as I get more/new information.

If you mean the recipes, I have them.  I'm not sure if they contain the smoker modifications that several people have been asking about recently.

I am currently on vacation in the Devils Tower area (I climbed to the top yesterday - yahoo!) and that file is on my home computer.  I'll look at what it has when I get back home on Friday.

Thanks for the reply.

I've seen pictures of Devil's Tower. The only way I would get to the top is by helicopter. ;D Congratulations on reaching the top.

I was referring to the download of the whole website, that would include the HTML coding. I still have the recipe download file.

That is good news that you have the file, when I installed Windows 10 I lost mine. I would hope there is a way some of us could get the file.

Thanks HAB

The problem with the recipe file is that it is too large for me to send it by email. My ISP puts restrictions on how large of an attachment I can send; especially if it is an .exe file. I would need to upload it to a hosting site using FTP (File Transfer Protocol). If I can find a way to do that I'll let you know.

I'm still out of town but I've used Google Docs to host large files in the past and made them available to anyone.  I don't know if it only works with pdf files or if it could be used to host other types, too.

I just look around there and it looks like Google Drive can be used to host large files of multiple types.  I think the free file size limit is 15GB.

That is a good idea. Currently the recipe file is a .gso file that requires the Golden Section Reader program to view the file. In the past I've spoken with Trey about converting this into a pdf format. I may have to revisit that idea. I did a quick search and it appears that pdf documents can be uploaded to google docs.

About once a year or so, I'll get a Berkshire Boston butt, and smoke it for some great pulled pork. That pork is so good, and is worth the additional cost.

Dropbox is always an option Hab, you could put the files in there and just email the link to whomever you wish, I'd love to get a copy of the recipes.

OK, I just uploaded both the .gso file that contains all of the recipes, Bradley smoker modification how-tos, etc., that were on the old Susan Minor site and also version 2.8 of the Golden Section Reader, which was the last FREE version they released before they started charging for it.  The recipe file is about 13MB and the reader is 3MB. You need the reader to view the recipe file. I searched for the free version online but they removed it.  However, I still had the original .exe file that I downloaded years ago on my HDD.

Please let me know if you have any problems with either downloading or installing the software. I *think* I did it correctly, although I am not all that experienced with Google Drive.  I know the reader works for Windows 7 and Windows XP.  I'm not sure about Windows 10 or others.

The files are being hosted on Google Drive.  Click on Bradley Recipes (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bxke58Q2eXnBRk5IOFdhQnZaa2s) to view or download them.

If the above link doesn't work, here's a more direct approach to each of the two files:

TedEbear;

Thanks for posting that. You have uploaded the last file gso file that was included in the download. That will definitely provide the recipes, but lacks the features of "click to enlarge" for photos, and to open any of the 7 documents that are linked to some recipes/articles;  though all internet links should work.

The gso file will only contain the recipes (and internet links), if one wants to "click to enlarge" a photo, of want to review the pdf files that contains one of the 7 links to those documents such as "When Is Meat Done?", the Recipe_v4.exe is needed. If you have the file Recipes_v4.exe (28mg) that would be a better file to upload. That will install the gso file plus the folders "Images" and "Files", that works with the gso file so you can enlarge photos by clicking on them, or view the pdf document.

I currently have a version that I did not get to upload prior to the recipe site going down. That would be Recipes_v5.exe. That version would be about a 46mg download. So I when I find the best  way to distribute that full download; I'll post that in this thread.

I forgot to mentions that version of GSReader does work in Windows 10. If you have any problems with the program, just set it compatibility mode to XP, though Window 10 should automatically set that mode for you when you open the program.

OK, you can upload that 46MB file to Google Drive and post a shared link to it.  The free space for Google Drive is 15GB, so it should work.  Make sure you right click on the file after you u/l it and select "Create a shared link".

That was for Habs to create a link after he uploads the file for sharing. Just left click on the link I posted earlier and you should be able to d/l it.

The software company only makes the gso programs for Windows. If you search, there are ways you can run Windows and/or Windows programs on a Mac, but I'm not that familiar with that. Google "can you run windows programs on a mac".

Today I was on Golden Section site, and was surprised to see all their software is now free. So I've downloaded GSNote4; which is the program that creates the gso files, and GSReader4, which is a reader only. If you download GSNotes, you really don't need to download GSReader. Just note that GSReader (v.4) installation download will overwrite GSReader (2.8,) download. If you don't want an editor (GSNotes), and just want to view gso files then just download the reader. I believe v.4 is downward compatible with v.2.8, but I haven't tested it.

After downloading the file(s) you want, click on the purchase button to get the software keys.

Many thanks to TedEBear and Habs,
Downloaded the GSO notes - did have a problem when I went to register. Got the reg code from the GSO site but is also asked for the product key. Couldn't find it so I entered the reg key in both blanks and it worked.

Ted- I downloaded the recipe V4 file. Do I need to also download "the original gso" file or is it included in the V4 file.

Thanks very much for the efforts you both out in to getting this info to the rest of us.

TedEbear;

Thanks for posting Recipe_v4.exe.

Gus;

Recipe_v4.exe, will install the gso file, plus the folders "Images" and "Files".  If you don't need the "click to enlarge", that will enlarge many of the photos, you can save disk space and just download the gso file and the reader.

If you have a PC, you can download a copy of the recipe site. The information on how to do it is listed below.

I finally have the recipe files on Google Drive for anyone to download. Please review the below information, about the installation. You will be able to read this information during installation.

This will install the Member's Recipes file (Recipes From The Bradley Smoker Forums_v1.gso), and the "Images" and "File" folders into the default directory of Golden Section Reader (GSReader). C:\Program Files\GoldenSection Reader (if you didn't change the directory during installation; which is not recommended).

********

If you installed Golden Section Reader in another directory, or if you have a 64 bit version of Windows the default directory for the 64 bit version will be C:\Program Files (x86)\GoldenSection Reader; still the "Recipes From The Bradley Smoker Forums_v1.gso", "Image" and "File" folders will be installed in C:\Program Files\GoldenSection Reader. After opening Golden Section Reader you must use "File>Open" within GoldenSection Reader, navigate to C:\Program Files\GoldenSection Reader, and select Recipes From The Bradley Smoker Forums_v1.gso to open it.[/I]

Depending on how your harddrive is formatted, the installation program will show between 37 MB to 38.9 MB, you will need 46 MB of free disk space to load the recipes, photos and other files.

Recipe_5v (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7Dnl_qvQ1j1d3hjYkYwVmpYc1U/view?usp=sharing)
Installation program for Recipes From The Bradley Smoker Forums_v1.gso file, and folders "Images" and "Files". Please note this will overwrite any previous files on your computer.

GSReader v2.8 (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7Dnl_qvQ1j1bzN0QzZqek1vUW8/view?usp=sharing)
The last GSReader that did not require a software key.

If you have any problems downloading, or installing these files; please let me know.

It appears that SmartScreen doesn't recognize the file structure, and Google Drive can not scan the file for viruses, so you will get warnings. I use McAfee AV, and I scan the file for viruses prior to uploading, so it is virus free.

When Windows 10 displays the SmartScreen, read the warning. At the end of the warning you will see the word "more". Click on that word, and another window will open. There will be a button that says "Run anyway", click on that and the program should install.

v4 would be the file that TedeBear uploaded. To find Recipe_v5.exe open File Explorer, in the Tree Listing on the left side of the screen you will see a list of folders. One of those folders should be named "Downlaods". Click on that folder, and Recipe_v5.exe should be in there. If it is not there do a search for "Recipe_v5.exe" either in File Explorer or in Cortana. That should locate the file on your hard drive. Once located, just double click on the file name.
