Title: Fan Mod problem / help needed
Post by: Greyghost on November 12, 2017, 05:11:05 AM
I'm having a slight problem with the fan that I added to my original bradley smoker.  I guess I should share my current set up with you first.  I have an original SS 4 rack model.  It's hooked up an auberins PID designed for the smoker and I'm running two of the original 500W elements.  I recently added a fan that came out of convection oven.  Because of the size of the fan blade and the lack of room in the 4 rack model I placed the fan in the bottom right corner.  The problem I'm running into is that it blows directly on the smoke generator's heating element and cools it down enough that it will not heat the bisquette's enough to generate smoke.

So my question is...   Has anyone mounted an auxiliary fan on the top of the unit blowing down with success or would this be an ineffective location for it ?

Any help appreciated.

Can you build a little diverter over the existing fan to direct the air away from the smoke generator?

I may be able to, but as you can see, once you add the bowl to catch the spent bisquettes things get pretty tight.

It does sound like an easy "try".  Thanks for the suggestion.

With the fan located beneath the "V" tray, I don't think you're getting the full effect of a circulation fan in the upper box where you need it. My advice would be to place it above the "V" tray.

Agree.  That's the reason I was thinking about adding it to the top.  I just haven't seen it done that way before.  I've been trying to save space, but I might end up having to build a custom rack to go around the fan.

If I remember correctly, one modifier put a convection fan in the back wall and notched one of the racks to accommodate the fan. Convection oven fans are the way to go I think as they're made for an oven.

I'm pretty sure I remember seeing the modified trays posted before.  I think I'll move the fan to the back and modify a tray or two.  Just in time to throw a turkey in.
