Title: Customized Bubba Pucks
Post by: Mr Walleye on July 22, 2007, 04:38:57 PM
I finally got around to modifying my Bubba Pucks by drilling out my Bubba Pucks. 9 x 3/8" holes in each puck. Here's a pic.

Trying to solve a problem or just being unique?

I don't really have a problem but I wanted to reduce the weight of the pucks a bit. It seems to make the advance motor work a little harder than just pushing wood pucks.

I just received my pucks. Ordered last Tuesday the same day I ordered my DBS. Pucks arrived. Waiting on smoker.

There is sure not much to the pucks for the price, ( 3 for $24.99 + $6 shipping).

I am getting anxious to get my DBS. Ordered 7/17, advised that it would ship within two business days and take three to five days for delivery.

I made my own pucks years back and drill 9 1/2" holes to reduce the weight and the load on the puck motor.

Can't blame a guy for tinkering, WCK....I can't wait for my warranties to wear out on my "stuff" so I can start altering things without voiding the warranty!! I'll just reiterate that considerable testing demonstrated no extra loading on the advance motor or any other reason to lighten up the Bubba Pucks. In fact, checking with the machinists indicated that the critical "lightening up" would occur in the customer's wallet... ;)  I gotta tell ya though.....those are some pretty well measured/drilled holes! Mine would probably look like they were drilled with buckshot ;)

Sherlock is pretty much correct in pointing out the simplicity of the design, which is actually it's strength. Can an individual make one at home for less money?.....Certainly, if they have access to aluminum stock, cutting, and burr removing equipment. Unless I'm after the experience of making something, making my own custom designed product, or obtaining a new tool  ;) ;D, I usually chose to go with less expensive route of buying things ready-made. And I suspect that the BPs are a once-in-a-lifetime purchase, since they'll outlast me!

Kummok

I drilled those puppy's freehand!

Your right on the money! I do just love to tinker. Let along the tools a guy just has to have!   ;)

I also agree there is no way for them to be made this way and still be cost effective. They truely are a must have in my opinion, doesn't really matter if they are modified or not the most important thing is you have them.

I've got to agree with Kummok about lifetime.  It is like a carpet wand for $800.00. Ouch until you realize that the wand will carry you through your lifetime of cleans.

I think your right about that. They don't seem like they will wear out in my lifetime. LOL

I would think that drilling holes would just make for more spots for char/grease/gunk to collect, not to mention making them harder to clean. :-\
