Title: New Food Saver on the Market
Post by: Habanero Smoker on May 23, 2008, 02:55:00 AM
I just got a notice from FoodSaver. They have a new vacuum sealer that is almost fully automatic, and with more bells and whistles. You just slide the end to the bag you want to seal in a slot, and the machine does the rest. It's also sells at a pretty decent price. I just might upgrade mine, and past my old one on to a relative.

That is a nice one indeed, Habs.  The wife and I were out browsing yesterday (waiting for our insurance settlement check to come in so we can replace the items we lost) and we went to Bed, Bath and Beyond.  Not sure why they call it that; when I got to the back of the store, there was nothing beyond it.  But anyways, I digress......I had 2 foodsavers that were lost and I saw that new one and said to the wife: Wife, we need to get that.  She didn't say no, so there's a 50-50 chance I'm gonna pick that one up.

Do you ever use the canisters for the foodsaver?  If so, what type of applications do you use them for.  The last one I had included the canisters but I never used them.

Thanks Habs.  I may have to get one of these.  My current Vac 550 model still works fine, but is way out of date.  I  have had it for years.

I have a V2860, which I just picked up several months ago.  I'm wondering why this new model, if it is the latest and greatest, why is it so much cheaper than the previous models like the V2860, and even cheaper than the V2840?!?

So now I'm wondering is there something this new model doesn't do, or do as well as the other, more expensive models?

Come to think of it, I never have either, but it is hard to buy one without one type of canister included. I may be able to use part of my sister-in-law's property for a garden. If so I will be growing mostly peppers. I may you the canisters for storing the peppers after they've been dried and smoked.

I have over 20 canisters and use them for everything, wet or dry. I have had only one fail and it was not a foodsaver canister. Hope this helps.

I use them for marinating and curing small batches of jerky. The kids favorite use is blowing up marshmallows.  :D

I have several canisters.  I use the large square one for marinading steaks, and a smaller round one for sealing up coffee grounds to keep it fresh longer.

I ordered one also, dont even have my smoker yet [next tuesday]. I kind of like your guys ideas like sealing stuff like pulled pork for future use. I will report on it's use, but I have never had a vac sealer before and have nothing to compare it with.

Welcome to the forum. Sealing works great. Out of the freezer and into boiling water and you are in business.

Even if you don't have a smoker the vac sealer is one of the best investments you can make for your kitchen.  I vac seal every piece of meat I buy, unless I'm cooking it that night or the next day.  And you can't beat it for wet ageing your beef cuts!

ThanX for the link Habs!! Quite an improvement on original design. Definitely worth the price...especially when compared to the cost of a vac chamber sealer. Still want the chamber sealer for all its advantages, but the $2500 price is still not justified to my wallet...maybe the next "free" guv'ment giveaway check?!?!?  ::)

La Quinta and Smokin Soon;

I would be very interested in your reports. Often when sealing bulky items I wished I have third hand, two the hold the ends of the bag to keep the bag closed, and the third to operate the sealer. The automatic sealer is now the third hand. :)

Kummock;
I could agree more. Maybe the next rebate check, I may be able to actually buy something with it. ;D

Maybe...but...they last for years (as other members have testified to) so...my assumption is it will amortize itself actually quite quickly...so don't worry...I'm not...nor should you...

Thanks for this info.  Did it come with everything that the buying direct would have?  If not, that could be part of the reason for the direct price being higher.  I do not need all the extra stuff that the direct offers.

I don't have a Costco in my area. I will be checking Sam's Club next week. I'm surprised they are already in stores like Costco.

Habs...wanted to follow up and give you feedback on the FoodSaver...actaully quite easy to use and compact...as it folds up...the only ridiculous problem I had was a tiny strip of cardboard in the "V-channel" that I missed when un-packing the unit. Opened it up...removed the cardboard...and all was good to go...easy to make bags...seal bags...etc...

I think I was particularly drawn to it for the size and compactness (if that's a word)!! I would recommend the unit.

But again...I have not had one before...you guys/gals may have some "major league" units that you would never trade...but for us...it's perfect.

Just a follow up...

Now that a seasoned member fessed up, I admit I did the same thing with that sneaky piece of cardboard on the bottom. Please have your adult beverages after you open your new Foodsaver and test it. I almost threw mine out the back door before I found that!!

Smokin Soon...I was going mad trying to figure out why it didn't work...took out a flashlight (in the middle of the day) poked it in there and viola...saw that sneaky little strip of cardboard...felt like a total idiot!!! :)

And PS...the directions aren't very good IMHO. But I would assume...if you've had a unit before...it would be very straight forward. I like it...having fun...:)

Thanks for the feed back. I currently have a basic FoodSaver that I got from Sam's, so this would be an upgrade for me. I like the fact that it is compact. And thanks for letting me know about the cardboard. You probably saved me some aggravation when I get mine. :)

Habs,
Brookfield is the next town up from Danbury. Just take rt. 202-7 south through New Milford.
The only thing I like about Costco is their return policy on appliances. They have a decent cheese selection also. Not fond of their meats at all. I also find that each Costco varies in their selections. The one down in Waterbury has a lumber dept and a deli. Go figure. With the price of gas you're not saving anything, prolly costing more. :D

You are right about the gas prices. Everything will probably balance out. Although once in a blue moon I go to Danbury, I may check it out. Is it Brookfield that has the new Cabela's.

The new Cabelas is in East Hartford.  I think it's right off 84 near Renschler(sp?) field.  I have been meaning to go up there and check it out but haven't been yet.

I am getting ready to purchase a new vacuum sealer, and will be buying Model # T000-18003. I got a email offering 25% off on all purchases, even items on sale. The offer ends at midnight. I'm not sure if it is for all customer or just through the email link. You will not see your savings until you check out.

While reviewing the features I noticed a marinade mode. Has anyone who has this machine used the marinade mode. If so do you feel it works.

Note: The marinade mode is after you place your food in a container, you switch to marinade mode. The container stays connected to the machine for 10 minutes. During that time it will hold the vacuum for several minutes, release the vacuum to allow the meat to rest, then the process will repeat 2 or 3 times during a ten minute marinade.

That's a nice lookin' unit.

Sorry I can't help you with your question. I've often looked at the vacuum canisters and the marinade canister but I've never pulled the trigger on them yet.

I too got the 25% off.  I called them and explained that I had reservations about the automatic function.  I was told that the sensor is very sensative and it sometimes took a little patience to operate.  I opted for the T000-03502-001 to replace the 550 model that I currently have.  The only real differences are:  Not fully automatic; hose storage vice retractable; and though it stores upright, must lay flat to operate.  I already have the canisters I need, so I was able to save some money on this one.

It does seem that the automatic function must have a learning curve, because they cover that in depth it their FQA. The demo makes it clear on how to feed the bag.

I can't wait to test the Marinade Function. I have the Reveo, but this seems it would be very handy for small amounts you want to marinate very quickly.

I don't have the revo or the unit you are mentioning but I do something similar on the few occasions that I use the Foodsaver for marinating.  I pull a vacuum, let is set for a few minutes, release, vacuum and then either repeat or just close the valve.  I always thought pulling out the air inside the meat then releasing would help suck the marinade into the meat.  If it works reliably, it sounds like a neat feature.

The  Revo is good for marinades and seasoning the  meats... and  i would say that a Vac  seal unit  would be great  for freezing  food befor and  after  cooking food

I have had the upright Foodsaver for about 6 months now and love it. It uses the generic bags just fine, as the originals are pricey. Using the rolls rathere than bags is cheaper. The Yard & Pool boys expect to get them back in stock, but for now I buy from this Ebay seller: http://stores.ebay.com/FOODSAVER-STORE (http://stores.ebay.com/FOODSAVER-STORE). They work as well as the original bags.

This is similar to what I do as well.  For steaks I normally vacuum, place in fridge for 15 minutes, release and let it rest for 5 minutes, then vacuum and into fridge for 30 minutes, release, then either grill with charcoal and wood or cold smoke, wrap for an overnight stay in the fridge then grill with charcoal.  Works fine for me.

I finally got a chance to check out the Marinade Mode on my machine. I used the marinator canister that came with it. It holds four chicken thighs (up to 2 pounds), and I have used it twice. Because of it's sleek design I leave it on the counter top, and the retractable hose make it very convenient to use.

The first time I used as directed, just ran the marinade mode one time, which is a 10 minute cycle. It was alright but I was not too impressed with the flavor. The second time, using the same marinade recipe, I ran it through the cycle twice. After the first cycle, I turned the chicken over and ran it again. There was a great improvement in flavor.

So if you only have a small amount of meat you want to marinade quickly, this is more convenient, easier to use and clean up then the Reveo. So if you machine has a Marinade Mode, it is well worth the time to use if for small amounts of meat.

I have the Foodsaver 2860 model and have always used the regular sized rolls. I see that there are "jumbo" rolls that are 50 feet long. Does anyone know if these fit the regular foodsavers?
