Title: Iron Chef Ingredients and Smack Talk Thread
Post by: Tenpoint5 on April 18, 2009, 06:24:04 AM
As I said I came home from work this morning and the drawing was conducted.

The Ingredients are:

Pork Tenderloin
Pine Nuts
Raisin's

You have 2 (Two) weeks to prepare a ONE dish meal containing ALL three ingredients. Remember that only 20% of the cooking can be done using a the house stove/oven. You have a fully stocked PANTRY at your disposal.

On Saturday May 2nd I will post a Iron Chef Picture turn in thread. You will have until Monday May 4th to submit your pictures of how you prepared your dish. At which time a poll will be added and the forum members will vote until Friday morning on who will be the winner!! GOOD LUCK!!

First you have to corner the tree, Then get him to drop his trousers they should be right there!!

A question was brought up about the meat. It is the small Tenderloin it IS NOT the large loin that you would get Pork Chops or Canadian Bacon from.
Just to clear up any confusion.

Yes  SS you have a full pantry to use whatever you desire. Or it could be as simple as grilling a piece of tenderloin and sprinkling raisins and pine nuts over the top. Another Idea I might try LQ.

AS A REMINDER FOR EVERYONE

Basic Iron Chef rules:

Be creative on your recipes.

It can be as simple as a new ABT or a recipe that would take a snooty waiter in a fancy-schmancy restaurant 10 minutes to describe.

At least 80% of the cook time must be done in the Bradley Smoker, grill or other cooking method. Up to 20% of the cook time can be done on the stove, oven, grill or other cooking method. Wrong spot

Use any spices or pre-made BBQ sauces, or other goodies as you wish.

The recipe is not limited to just the 3 main ingredients. Your pantry is open and anything is fair game to be used in your recipe. As long as the meat and two other ingredients are in one dish. ie...one bite gets all three ingredients.

It can be breakfast, brunch, lunch, or supper, or midnight snack.

Now I am getting confused again. Does the rule now mean I can use a combined 80% of the cooking time using my Bradley and any other cooking method, except the oven and stove. Example, the Bradley may take 40% of the time, the other cooking method can take up to 40% of the time; and the oven and stove 20%?

Sorry about that Basically what it means is that Your supposed to avoid using the kitchen stove/oven as much as possible. Trying to Avoid hearing "I smoked for 30min put in oven for 3hours to finish while I made a sauce on the burner." What we want is the majority of the cooking to be in the Bradley and/or other outside cooking method.

For Everyone
DON'T READ INTO THE RULES TOO MUCH THIS IS MEANT TO BE SOMETHING FUN FOR EVERYONE!!!!

The change in that one rule was confusing. I'm getting a better understanding when you clarified the "other" as "other outdoor". The way it read any other method one could conclude that the use of electric frying pans, deep fryers, microwave, crock pots etc. were acceptable as part of the 80%.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I am bummed!  I've got the absolutely guaranteed winning recipe but I don't have time to get it done since I'm leaving on Wednesday and won't be back until the contest is over.  Oh well, congratulations to whoever was originally going to place second.  Enjoy your (slightly tarnished) victory.

PS - I could possibly be bribed to part with the winning recipe but be advised - I am (notoriously) easy but I ain't cheap!

Hmm, so he baits LQ publicly but me privately......    I get this pm from 10.5 this afternoon asking if I have the puppy yet.  I answer back yes, picked her up this morning about 1/2 way home....  she's perfect.  I get another email saying  that is good, he wants me distracted so I won't enter the Iron Chef contest..........   So I'm taking that as a challenge issued  ;D

I spent 12 hours in a car today with a sleeping puppy & a husband that did 90% of the driving........   I had time to think about what to do with a pork tenderloin, raisins & pinenuts.............. :D :D  It's all outlined in my phone!

And,  the puppy is very perfect.... more later...............

Egads, the things you miss when your 'puter is in the hospital.  Got one of them nasties.  A pox upon all those warts who think up things nasty to do to a computer.  They need a life - a life at the end of a 45 or better yet at the end of a line tied around their pine nuts.  (did I really say that?)  I'd attribute the problem to Tea Bags, but I don't think that LQ would do that to sweet little ole me!

Pine nuts - love 'em.  Pignolia - reminds me of times fishing among the pinyon pines of New Mexico.  Oh, and do I have a recipe.  It'll blow your mind.  It'll make your tongue slap the tastbuds right outta yer head.  Might as well just clear the table.  None of ya'll stand a chance!  Don't waste your time - just go ahead and send me the black towel.  Pasta - smasta.

I aint afraid of no Chicks!!!! or was that Ghosts? Ducked the teabag but caught the "WhatFor" Momma had for me. Left the thread open she read it. I told her it was a Smack talking thread. "I hope they whoop your _ _ _ but Good!" was the reply.

To answer the question of whats a WhatFor. Remember when you was little sitting in church goofing off when Dads hand, which was conveniently placed behind your head, whopped you a good one. What did you say? What was that For!!!! That's a WhatFor.

Mike,
In my best Elmer Fudd voice, "Be vewy quiet.  I'm hunting wascally wabbits."  Think it will work on a 10.5 buck?

Still trying the jig jig jig pause method as well.  I can be very versatile. :)

BTW, where's the teabag lady, puppy lady and chicken lady?  I'm assuming they have already moved on to something they might be able to do well.

INCOMING TEABAG!!!! :o

Where's my salt lick?

BTW 10.5, it wasn't me who alleged you were Bogarting something.  I believe that was our friend UIS.  I'm telling you UIS is lurking out there in the weeds just waiting for the appropriate moment to take us all out.

What about it UIS?

Deb

Do you have more details on the generator problem...

Will it advance pucks manually?

Does it try to advance every 20 minutes?

Is the burner plate getting hot?

We gotta get that sucker going... That just wouldn't be fair!  ;)

I was gonna suggest that since most everyone did their Iron Chef meal over the weekend that we open the Turn in thread on Monday Morning. I won't do that since the Puppy Lady can't get her Apron strings tied!!! ;D ;D I can wait a week to show off and win with a Apple pie Pork Tenderloin Soup and Pasta!!!

Shouldn't be just to hard to beat LQ. You have to post pictures of your meal and I believe there is a post by LQ that says "the entire picture thing eludes me..."

Guess the Lady's have hung up their Aprons and have to watch the Boy's Play!!!!   If You Can't Run With The BIG Dogs, You Better Stay On The Porch!!!!! Or was it You Cant Run With The BIG Dogs, If You Bark Like a Pup!!!!

Mike,  you are a knight!! :)

I have heat, it just wasn't cycling the pucks.  I cleaned it not that long ago but just took it apart and it was pretty dirty.  I fixed the advance button that I knocked loose when I cleaned last time and worse case now is that I have to hit the advance button every 20 minutes since that is now working.  Waiting 20 minutes now to see if it will advance the bucks itself.   Woo hoo!!!!!  just heard a puck drop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10.5  - Believe me when I tell you I am quite capable of tying my apron strings and doing many other things at the same time! ;D  Also,  don't you worry - LQ's pictures will be up - it was a momentary elusion (not sure this is a word) ;D

You know what boys and girls?  We have some folks out there who have not said a word the whole time.  Some folks who have been very well schooled and trained.  I'm thinking they are out there just laying in the weeds waitiing to drop a major bomb on our collective smack talking butts and I don't mean pork butts.

However, having said all that I have never made the dish I will be posting nor did I make it last weekend to test drive it so it's all or nothing.

ARE YOU READY TO PLAY THE GAME?!

BTW, Sweet on the 120 count of pucks!  Thanks Bradley!!  You guys just rock!!

Yeh, I think 10.5 wimped out by not putting barbacoa, calf or lamb fries, tripa, kidneys, tongue, sweetbreads, and those southern standbys - chitlin's on the list.  Now that would make for some interesting competition - kinda like the "original" Iron Chef with their use of fish eyeballs and fish guts and no telling what else!

GAME ON!
Team Caney is in game day shape!
Won't say what the shape is, but 6-packs abs aren't in the picture!

Game day shape Caney where 6 pack abs aint in the picture? Must be working on the 1 pack KEG ab then!! Working on one of them myself. Let's see I think the saying is "I'm in SHAPE, Round is a Shape!!"

I prefer the more PC term 'thick' as in "I'm in shape - thick is a shape!"  It would be a multi-use adjective - thick shaped and thick headed!

DD&D had the calf fry episode on last night - late, late, late.  I was watching it while trying not to cough my lungs out.  Kinda glad chitlin's weren't included.  I'm imaginative and creative, but not too sure what I could do with chitlin's, avocado, chocolate!

You just had to go and poke that bear with a stick again didn't you? :D

My entry will most likely be prepared tomorrow although it is supposed to rain all day Saturday and Sunday here.

I'm really sorry Smoking Duck is apparently unable to get in on this.  He would love the competition but he would really love slapping LQ around a little bit.  ;D He probably wouldn't slap Deb around since she is the mother of one of his pups.

That and Deb knows exactly where he lives. So she could hunt him down. You and I are fairly safe. Besides it isn't really like poking a bear more like that old coon dog laying on the porch, just raises his head and looks around then goes back to sleep. Heck LQ is still doing dry runs hasn't even started cooking yet. She will get behind and get all flustered trying to rush things goof it up, forget the battery in the camera. Gonna take her 3 days to figure out how to upload and post the pictures. Contest will be over by then NO WORRIES about her. The Puppy Lady even admitted hers wasn't as good as DOG food but Saffron would have ate it. We have NO WORRIES Larry!!!!

LQ,
Are you trying to infer that we finally came out of the closet?   ???

Uh, since you have previously posted that your entry is already done and pics have been made, where are they or are 10.5 and I going to have to walk you through that part too?  :D

Nice looking entry Deb!  I like it almost as much as 10.5's but not as much as the winning entry that I just posted.

KyNola

Good luck everyone.  Jan and I had a great time planning and preparing the dish.

Who Might the Sleepers Be? I figure Hab's will pop in and post Monday morning about 4am, I believe I seen something about Icerat thinking on things. O'l Mr Mesquite was looking through a Tumble weed didn't think we was watching. Roadking was talking some Smack then went into hiding. Both of the Seemores have entries. That's 6 more for a total of 9.  Lq has been online all day just to get two pictures of her dogs posted. It will take her a week to post the pics of her cook and type how she did it.

You folks have some truly terrific looking food posted.  This was my turn in.

The loin is wrapped up in the bacon weave.

The asparagus are those round green things stuffed with raisins and roasted pine nuts, then wrapped in bacon.

Ready for the smoker.

Ok, Ok,
So it is really a bacon explosion with sausage and hamburger, stuffed with smoked bacon, smoked jalapenos, 4 blend cheeses, Bad Byron's, and Bulls Eye, wrapped in the bacon weave.  The ABTs were smoked jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese, bacon, and rub, wrapped in bacon then smoked and baked.  This along with a bone in pork butt went to a house warming party last weekend.

This weekend I am doing 20 lbs of beef jerky.  Son sent me a text message with his address (which I already have), along with a note that I could use the address to send some jerky if I had it.  Hard to resist since it was his birthday as well.  Fortunately my son-in-law and I were talking about going to Iowa Meat farms tomorrow for the Treager Show and I was mentioning I wasn't able to get a driver loaded on my new Vista 64 computer.  He mentioned he had read on the web that some folks were having a problem with XP and switched the camera setting from PC Connection to Printer/PTP and voila, it worked.  I guess I owe him the proceeds from the next Iron Chef challenge.  Hard to beat the all you can eat Brazilian Steak House we feasted on Friday at lunch.  11 different types of meat cooked over open fire and as long as you keep the marker with the green side up, they keep bringing it.  I had to use the winch on the truck to pry myself through the door of the restaurant when we finished.

Someone came by with a weed-whacker and destroyed my habitat,
So I had no choice but to post early.
It's interesting to see what everyone comes up with.
Anyway it was a challenge and I enjoyed conjuring up something new.
At least it was tasty!

this was just too funny to me for some reason,
i left the kitchen door open while i was smoking some peanuts and chicken wings.
i realized that i had not seen bailey in a while so i checked outside (he sneeked out when i wasn't looking)
he was laying on the hill behind the house! he had positioned himself so he could see into the kitchen so he
knew when i was looking for him.
the first thought that came to mind was when Kynola said there were people lurking in the weeds.
sorry i just had to do this post! :D :D

No Chastizing from here LQ.  If you consider most of the entries were variations of stuffed loins, the Iron Chef judges would have to give you extra points on some originality.

Y'all, these are some serious good eats.  Each post I look at I say, "Gotta Try That!"  But honestly most of these require a level of culinary art I have yet to try.  Heck, just chopping the Pinyon Nuts fine like you all do.  Wow.  But I know that I will not try these as my wife hates Raisons.  Some of these might be able to remove them, but most not, defeats the purpose.

Now to wonder which embody the aroma and texture of each main ingredient and do not put them on the sideline but up front and central and blend so perfectly.

I must say, the aptitude of Sauce making is great, sure I can make a good béarnaise and bordelaise and every once and a while a good Jalapeno, Lime, and Cilantro reduction, but wow, these look good.

Good job all.

LESSON LEARNED!

Don't wait till the last weekend to get your entry done.  Last weekend all blocked up and so was this one, but since my softball games this week were early, I'd get'r dun Sunday evening.  Well turned out everything for the weekend was canceled, including Bradley smoking.  Rained all weekend - not off and on, but all weekend.  And I don't have a covered place to use the Bradley.  Used a blowtorch to get the Bandera going to do some fajitas for the family and thought about cheating, but thought twice - you can't pull anything over on the teabags!!!

I agree with everyone here in that this was just plain old fun!  Lots of ingenuity too!  And we need to do this again sometime!  I want to post recipes just to get feedback from everyone!
Deb, I thought about adding a yogurt/dill sauce on top of the pita before I dished it up, but then laziness - and a HIGH MAINTENANCE Doberman puppy got the best of me.  :)
Glad to hear that someone else out there - your son - is a hummus fan.  I love to take that to work just to watch the grimaces appear once my coworkers have been told what it is.
Pity for them;  I think it is seriously good stuff!

Coulda, woulda, shoulda,

In the face of the nine day and continuing rain (well not really, it stopped for about 4 hours yesterday), I just have to chime in with my ideas about what the winning recipe would have been.

Around Nashville, pulled pork served on top of a cornbread flatcake is popular so I was going with a New World Order Pork on Cornbread

Make a barbecue sauce utilizing bourbon and ground raisins.

Core a tenderloin and stuff with string cheese - smoke normally finishing off with the bourbon/raisin bbq sauce.

Make a polenta with goat cheese and pine nuts.  Let set up in a loaf pan.  Slice into a thick slice and crisp up in a fry pan.

Put the polenta slice on the plate, slice up tenderloin and arrange nicely on top of the polenta.  Drizzle some of the sauce on top of the pork.

Serve with a savory pesto cheesecake (with pine nut bottom crust) and some creamy cole slaw on the side.

It is springtime isn't it?  Wet though it may be!

I read somewhere that asparagus promotes the formation of certain kidney stones.  Those ain't NO fun.  So's I don't eat them much anymore.  In looking at it one way, the Iron Chef competitors are a sadistic bunch, especially the ones who wrap the Potential Pain in bacon!   ;D ;D

Caney,
You don't have to be smoking to make them I didn't smoke mine at all just cooked indirect on the grill. You have to watch them kinda close cause if they get to hot the Asparagus will dry out and turn into black nasty. I have a product called Cookies Flavor Enhancer that I put on mine, works really good, but any rub will work on the bacon. Also I have never been able to get more than 5 stalks on a standard toothpick. Run the toothpick through the thick part and another on the top. Toothpick helps keep them flat and is a great Bacon hook.

I would also like to add that I AM NOT a mean and vicious person. Prior to talking My Smack talk which was mainly directed at the TEABAG LADY and the PUPPY LADY. I did send them a pm telling them NOT to take me serious that I was just having some fun. To Which they both responded with "Game On Sounds Like Fun" or words to that effect! Hopefully I didn't offend anyone during this whole Iron Chef Smack talk thing.
