Is there a thermometer that checks the meat temperature without opening the smoker door?  I read about one that is inserted through the vent.  Does it just check smoker temperature?
Hate to sound dumb, but I am, about this subject.  Maybe just ignorant.
Can you recommend a brand.  Something simple to use.
Thanks so much for your help.

Hi wolfnanny,

Welcome to the forum.

I use a Maverick ET-73, a remote thermometer that has two probes, one that will read smoker temperature and one that will read the internal meat temperature.

I thread the probe wires through the vent at the top of the smoker but I think others run theirs through the door. i.e just shut the door on the wires.

The remote bit is useful but is not quite as good in terms of distance that the manufacturers claim, however mine does work through walls and allows me to sit in my lounge or be in the kitchen and monitor the smoker outside.

My understanding they are easy to get hold of in the US although they are not available on the other side of the pond, I got someone in the US to get and post me one.

Hope this helps, there was also another post on the forum about another Maverick recently, doing a search should pinpoint more information.[:)]

If you are in the USA this site http://www.thegadgetsource.com/011502013733.html usually has the best deal on the Maverick ET-73, if you include the shipping cost.

Hi Wolfnanny,
I recently ordered one from Bradley on the telephone, received it the next day.
It is shown on the Bradley website in their "Product Showroom", >
"Digital Thermometer", Product Code BTDIGITHERM.
I used it this weekend, it worked real well. It could also be used to just measure the cabinet temperature or to check out the accuracy of the thermometer on the door.
Good Luck,

WCS

PS. wolfnanny,
I also ran the wire through the top vent and inserted the meat probe
into one of the three turkey breasts that I smoked at(202 to 205 deg)
Good luck to you.

The description at the Sausage Maker's site does not give that much information. It looks like a good basic product to control the cabinet temperature, and if that is all you need it may be a bargain. If you compare the features of both that and the Raptor/Guru, my conclusion - "You get what you paid for!"[:)]

My question is this... but first I quote them: <blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"><font size="2">This control and sensor has an <b><font color="red">incredible accuracy of ?</font id="red"></b> 5F variation. </font id="size2"><hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote"> Now are they asking a question here as in they don't believe the temp swing the manufacture is claiming? Given from what that unit looks like I just about bet your temp swings will be greater the +/- 5 degrees.

Kamanodental

Hi everyone

Does anyone know anything about or where to get a good (not too expensive) temp control sensor?  I hate waking up in the middle of my naps to check temp. I would like to have something that can hold a temp or +/- a few degrees. I dont know if the sausage maker control will make it...looks kinda hmmmm to me especially with a question mark ...sounds like maybe or maybe not.
