Love the idea of doing sous vide - have been looking at as many posts as I can.  I was thinking of the Dorkfood controller and an old oval crock pot I have, but then sage advice from a TV judge comes to mind "the cheap comes out expensive", and I've too many times gone the inexpensive end only to have to purchase what I should have bought in the first place.

The Dorkfood control works great but your results really depend on the cooker you use.
The real thing is a dream to use.  ;)

That's actually the machine that a friend of mine has, and he swears by it.  The only down-side is that it costs as much as a reasonably good grill.  ;D

I may bite the bullet and go with it anyway though... you only live once
