The past couple summers a park ranger at a local state park puts together a kids fishing fun day. People volunteer to help out with what ever they can. Last year we donated 6 brand new rod and reels with tackle to go with. So, naturally this year we volunteered to help bait hooks and untangle lines. Plus supply/cook hot dogs/buns with all the fixings. The park ranger got a couple local police forces on board this year. And looking at a turn out of 400 :o for the June 14th event. This hole event is all done by donations/volunteer. If you would like to help out with a gift card/kids fishing gear let me know. Here is a link to the face book page.

Just want to say thank you. Here is an update.

'Cops and Bobbers' event hopes to 'hook' children on fishing

April 17, 2014 4:00AM | By Dave O'Brien | staff writer

The Brimfield Police Department wants to reel in area youngsters for a free day of fishing and spending time with emergency personnel for the inaugural "Cops and Bobbers" event, scheduled for June 14 at the West Branch Reservoir in Portage County.

Police Chief David Oliver said he wants to attract both children who already fish as well as those for whom it may be their first time.

"We wanted to 'hook' them and show them there's an alternative to video games" this summer, he said.

Sponsored by the Brimfield Police Department, Kames Sports, the "Destination Outdoors" show on Fox Sports Radio 1350 and with assistance from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Michael J. Kirwan Dam and Reservoir and numerous volunteers, fire departments and law enforcement agencies, the event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 14.

Pre-registration for participants, ages 15 and under, is expected to begin Monday on the "Cops and Bobbers" Facebook site at www.facebook.com/copsandbobbers and through the Brimfield Police Department Facebook page.

Fishing licenses will no be required for children or adult volunteers, according to Oliver.

He said he wants to "get as many kids as we can come out with a parent or guardian" and fish. There also will be food, police K-9s, wildlife specialists with live animal displays, police and fire vehicles and giveaways at picnic areas A and B, he said. Members of the Berkley Fishing Team of Ohio also will be on hand, Oliver said.

"Having four children myself, I know what it's like for some kids to get distracted after 15 minutes or half an hour of fishing, so we not only want them to fish but to have other fun as well," he said.

Oliver, who said he was "pretty poor growing up" in Akron and learned to dig his own worms and fish in local creeks -- "or 'cricks,' depending on where you're from" -- said he is excited for the event.

"We're looking for a good turnout. We do so many programs, but we just needed to fit one more in," he said.

For more information or to volunteer, visit the "Cops and Bobbers" Facebook page or send an email to [email protected].

Still could use a little more help. As of today I have two cases of hot dogs in the freezer and need one more plus buns. Also looking to do 200-250 burgers. Plus kid friendly fishing gear. I can give you contact information to a local bait shop if you would like to help with fishing gear. Thanks

Gift card went out in today's mail, hope it helps. There is nothing more important than teaching kids about fishing and hunting to preserve our heritage and make future smoker's out of them.

Received gift card today Saber, thank you. Still could use a little help on the burgers if anyone is interested. A little here and there can add up and go a long way. Gift card, paypal, etc...

As of right now, besides fishing. There is also going to be the Portage County Dive Team, Police K-9 units from all over Ohio, Military vehicles on display, Fire House...the kids will use fire hoses to put the fire out, Learning stations - cleaning fish, etc., Casting contest, Native American dancers in full regalia and drums. And the actives keep growing....

Truly a great cause.

Come on folks, this is for kids and lord knows our kids need all the help they can get these days. THese will be some great activities where kids can put the video games down for a few minutes and participate with real men and ladies who can be very valuable role models to each of them.

A little will go a long way.

Just an update. These kids are going to have a blast. As of this past Monday 5/12/14, 170 registrations have been received with many still out and about 4 weeks to go. On June 7th I will be picking up 684 hot dog/burger buns from schwebel's at an amazingly discounted price. Dogs and burgers are in the freezer. Thanks to all that have helped out. Still need about 250lbs of ice if anyone is interested in helping out there. I'll keep you posted as things move along.

Thanks again,
Patrick

Update: As of this morning we have 240 registrations in and get a few everyday via email/snail mail/drop off. Zebco offered boys/girls combo rods at $10.50 each. Today, someone donated $500 cash for the event. So there will be fishing poles to use/give away. Going to be a great time! Thanks

Update: As of yesterday afternoon were at 417 registered kids and one week to go. Here is a nice write up in a local paper. I will post photos of the event next weekend.

"DESTINATION : OUTDOORS'' AND BRIMFIELD CHIEF OLIVER INITIATE "COPS AND BOBBERS" KIDS FISHING CELEBRATION, SET FOR JUNE 14

When Fox Sports radio co-host Steve Jones and I first discussed organizing a kids' fishing outing and celebration of the sport , we had little idea it would grow into what we now see as an emerging Godzilla of events just coming into view on the looming horizon...
Hooking up-so to speak- with our primary radio sponsor Kame's and Brimfield's popular and savvy Chief Dave Oliver was fortuitous, to say the least. Amanda and owner Steve Kame from Northeast Ohio's leading outdoor sports store stood at the ready to provide their insight into such an event and provide an ongoing list of possible and learned contributors. Chief Dave had had much the same idea for an outstanding event of this type and brought considerable skills and passion as both an author and social media prodigy to the planning table.

It almost makes Brimfield Beechcrest boys like Steve and I regret our home burg not even having a police department of its own when we wuz kids.Almost.

As pre-registrations mounted, early venue options began to look ridiculously undersized. With the help of Ranger Julie at West Branch, a wonderful and appropriately-sized venue was located, scouted, and reserved along Picnic Area B off Route 5. Please note the Rock Springs Road bridge is closed, so make any allowances.

What had started as essentially a cozy little fishing derby has now morphed into a potential Woodstock of kids fishing, and an appreciation of the great outdoors. Among the guests, exhibitors, and friends scheduled are : Steve Jones and yours truly from Fox Sports' " Destination : Outdoors" radio show, 14 different police department canine teams, genuine Native American dancers, the local department dive team will do a live demonstration, the Berkley Fishing team will be on hand to instruct and assist, a shuttle will run from the adjacent parking areas to the fishing site, Mark from Mark's Bait & Tackle will be on hand to lend some West Branch expertise, a wonderful Flag Day ceremony and presentation will kick-off the festivities, and the Kame's Sport Fishing Team, and my friend Keith Knerem from nearby Double K Bait & Tackle will all be on hand to meet and greet. And Gary from Ravenna Marine will be ferrying those in need back and forth from across from the site.

The official event times are from 9a.m. to 1p.m. , though all are welcome to continue to make a day of it. The event is free of charge and youngsters must be fifteen or younger and accompanied by an adult, who may assist with the children's fishing. An array of great food and snacks and drinks will be available for all attendees.Kids are advised to please bring their own rod and reel, though ones will be provided for those in need, as well as bobbers, weights, and enough live bait for everybody. Over 100 learned volunteers will be on hand to help with any needed instruction or assistance. If anybody thinks that may be a bit overkill, note that as of this writing , over 330 kids (!) from throughout Northeast Ohio have already pre-registered by going to the Facebook sites for either "Cops and Bobbers", "Destination: Outdoors", or Brimfield Chief Dave Oliver.

Those interested may indeed pre-register the morning of the event if at all necessary, but in the interest of time and preparation, all are strongly encouraged to do so beforehand. To easily do so access [email protected] or call the station at 330-673-7716.

This should be quite an initial event, and we much wish to thank the following sponsors for their generous time and contributions : Brimfield Police Department, Chief Oliver Foundation, Destination: Outdoors radio, Fox Sports 1350, Kames Sports, Army Corps of Engineers, West Branch State Park, Goodyear Hunting & Fishing Club, Berkley Fishing Team, Angelo's Pizza, Pat and Patty Riordan, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Nabisco, Zebco, W.L. Baumler Co., Frank's Ice Cream, Custard Stand Food Products, Ravenna Marine, Mark's Bait & Tackle, West Branch Bait & Tackle, Double K Bait & Tackle, Mogadore Bait & Tackle, and Rubbermaid, among others.

We look forward to a memorable time that will be looked back on fondly for years to come. I personally look forward to seeing you and your youngsters there on June 14 !
