You just need enough of a gap to break a positive connection with the box. 1/2"- 3/4" is all you need. It looks like you have 4" duct for your exhaust. If so, get a 4"X5" reducer for your start. It will give a you a little bigger collection hood. You can either suspend it for the gap or cut parts of the collar out to make "legs" to rest on the top of the smoker and provide the air gap.
