Alder Substittute?

I'm running low on Alder and will be smoking salmon tomorow. What would be a good substitute?? Thanks

Ditto.  We do all of ours with apple.  Hubby prefers it to the alder as this is how his family always smoked it.

I have only used maple, but will try apple next batch.

Never tried apple, have always used hickory. How does apple compare to alder and hickory?

To me, apple is mild like alder with a slight fruity sweetness. Hickory is a stronger smoke, better suited to chicken, pork & beef. JMHO.
