My best friend was moving from his apartment to a retirement home and I was helping him clean out his place. We came across a set of high end Onieda (sp?) knives that have never been used. I am guessing they are circa 1960s. I think there are 6 in the set. Of course there is a bread knife and then there are some serious slicing machines for cutting anything you could imagine. They are beautifully balanced and have significantly more blade than the knives that are sold today not to mention beautiful wooden handles and a blade that extends right through the handle to the heel. In my amateur opinion, they are a beautiful set of knives.
Believe it or not they were still packed in the original box and have the old style plastic knife holder that were screwed to the wall way back when. I was thinking of trying to find a knife block large enough to accommodate these babies. Does anyone have any idea where a decent source for over sized knife blocks might be in Canada? Or do you even think its worth trying to use them in todays world?
They don't make them like this anymore and who knows, ,maybe that's a good thing. Or maybe I just happened to get something that is truly awesome and will serve me for many years to come.
oak - You may be able to use a Kapoosh knife block; they come in several sizes and will accommodate almost any size blade. Check them out at kapoosh.com or Amazon.
Hey Oak,
Would you mind to take a photo of those knives and post it? I would like to see them if it's not too much trouble.
Good score!

Yes lets see these babies.
I will snap a few pics when I get home tonight
These babies are honkin but like I said they need a block
They are a lot longer than what they make today and its one sturdy piece of metal when you hold it in your hand
and like I said, perfectly balanced
nice score
would also like to see em.
Are you handy with wood. I think I would make my own.
I would look into purchasing one of the magnetic knife rails and Display them on the back wall.
I used to be handy with wood
In a previous life, I had a full working wood shop
Then we had a divide by 2 sale and I sold all my tools
I thought about the magnetic display idea, but I dont have enough room between the bottom of the cupboards and the counter. I am not sure I want these babies out where they might be too tempting for kids to touch. I intend to have them well used
That's an easy one to solve OS. Get them kids in the kitchen to help you cook. I have 10, 9, 8, and 5, I have the three older ones in the kitchen all the time. They know how knives work and that they should respect them and not play with them.
I have a knife block, send them to me and I'll see if they fit and send you a picture back. ;) ;D ;D
Nice score, that is something I could really use a GOOD set of knives. Someday.... I hope LOL.
OK, here we go. I tried to find a date on the box but no luck:

I've never built a knife block before, but they don't look that difficult. I'd be willing to help you out if you need it.
Yeah if you want to ship those to me I would be glad to build you one, and you would get them back.Eventually in a year or two. Or five. ;D ;D
Oh by the way that is a really nice set of knifes. ;) ;)
Nice score. Only recommendation I can give you is if you buy or make your own wood block, have the slots in a horizontal position so the knives are not stored on thier blade edge (verticle position).
I got to thinking... and that can be dangerous
I stuck my head under the kitchen cupboards, there is lighting under there so the cabinets look closer to the counter than they are.
I could probably hang a magnetic knife holder under there. My only concern is kids. My wife's son is autistic ( highly functional though ) and I would hope and pray he would not screw around with these babies. I do leave my other knives out that are in a block.
One day I came home and he had a knife turned point down on the cutting board trying to open a package of something. A block certainly would not stop that but it might be less tempting than a magnetic hanger
Try Lee Valley. www.leevalley.com They have a knike block that uses fibers & you can put any size knife in any position.

They're selling the Kapoosh knife block I mentioned in an earlier reply. Still worth looking at (and a lot less hassle than fabricating a custom solution).
Thank you much for the Lee Valley suggestion. I really like that idea.
I think there are some of the stores in my area or I will just order it on line
Then I can even get my existing knives in there as well and use what I need when I want it
I just had a look at the Lee Valley site. They only have one model, not sure if its the Kapoosh one that was mentioned
The website does not say who the manufacturer is.
The block is $37.50 and the magnetic hanger is $59.95
Does $37.50 seem like a reasonable price for a knife block like this ?
My guess is yes.
They even have it in stock

Here are some photos of the Kapoosh knife block. This is the "large" model but doesn't have the extra part on the front for steak knives.
The top measures 4.75 inches square and it holds as many knives as you can slide in. My "standard" wooden block is comparable (5 inches by 4.5 inches) and holds 10 knives.
This model will hold any blade up to 8.5 inches long. My wooden block will take 10.5 inch blades at the top and 7-inchers at the bottom.
As you can see, the rods are removable and can go in the dishwasher. Retail is $29.99.

and a pigtail flipper too ;D
Thanks for the pic
Guess where I am going on Saturday? They want 12 bucks to ship this puppy and its a 10 minute drive for me to the store
This is exactly what I need. I wasnt sure what the pipe thing meant, the pictures say a thousand words
I used to work for Kodak LOL
I got mine on eBay and bid retail plus tax minus the $15 shipping charge. After adding the shipping back in, I paid exactly what I would have if it was available in Hawaii. Bad joss to pay retail, but sometimes you just gotta go with it.
I love that finger grove cut into the handle like that. It may not fit everyone's hand but you can get used to it! Good idea on that knife block too!
Man I like that Kapoosh knife block. Seems like a great way to store knives. I have the wooden block that came with my Wusthof(sp?) knives.
