Title: Garage frig!
Post by: KyNola on October 01, 2011, 06:38:17 PM
There is a saying where I come from. "Even a blind sow finds an acorn every once in a while."  Well, I think I may have found an acorn.  I have been looking for a frig for quite some time to put in my garage to hold extra beer and to cure meats in.  A week ago I ran into a guy who owns several rental houses and asked if he had any frigs he wanted to sell cheap.  "As a matter of a fact I do."  Come to find out it is a stainless steel 2 door commercial unit.  7 feet tall, 54 inches wide and 32 inches deep.  The catch is he doesn't know for sure if it still works.  The price? $100.  Yeah, I'll risk $100 seeing as how I have a good friend who knows all about refrigeration.

Now all I have to do is figure out how I'm going to get the dang thing home! :o

Wish I was closer to ya. I would come right over and give you a hand. I got the dolly and good utility trailer which is nice and low so you don't have to lift to high. Got the "FOREARM FORKLIFT" if they were needed which keeps you from having to bend down when lifting. I could even probably digging in the seat cushions of the couch enough for a cold half sack of beer.

If it doesn't work, then I see a Double door sausage smoker in your future.

Wow Larry, great snag.  Someday I'll walk into a snag like that.  Can't wait to see what you do with it!  I'd offer to come up with my truck and help, but it needs a new battery, some transmission work and needs to have a new license plate.  I haven't driven it in quite some time.

For years I've wanted to learn to make bamboo fly rods, but was too cheap to buy the tools I needed.  Bought much of what I needed the other day for a 1/2 of what they would normally cost.  The guy I bought it from just happened to notice an estate sale and stopped.  Seems the guy who died was an fly gear junkie.  After I paid for the tools, he went back out to his car and brought in a boxful of fly reels, fly rods, lines.....etc....   Literally full - containing $1,000's of dollars of stuff if brand new and still $1,000's on the used market.  What did he pay for it - $100 and on the second day.

You get that baby home yet Larry?

Curt, if all goes as planned it comes home tomorrow evening.  I went out today and reserved a Ryder truck with a 3000 pound lift gate to bring it home in.  Last night I went to my regular watering hole hangout.  Was talking to the owner of the place and she said "go in the kitchen and measure mine and see if it is about the same size as mine."  I went in and measured it and it is identical with the exception that mine is 2 inches narrower.  Upon seeing just how big this thing really is I immediately knew a pickup truck and a couple of guys trying to hoist it was way out of the question.  Hoping that thing is on some major casters!

Bear in mind, I have never seen the one I am bringing home and have no guarantee that it will work when I plug it in but for $100, I'll take the risk!  Will take pics once I get it home and cleaned up.

In a couple of hours Operation Garage Frig begins.  If y'all don't mind could you think good thoughts for the next 2-3 hours?  I'm gonna be more than a little pissed if I get over there and this is a dorm frig or a tiny house frig. ;D

I'm thinkin it don't got wheels, All the commercial cooler/freezers i ever worked on had 6" long stubs for feet that catch on every thing when you go to move them.
I bet that old fridge of yours ghost has R-11 refrigerant in it, we still have a couple bottles of that around at work :-X
Can't wait to see this score as it will be a score if it works or not in my opinion ;)

That big heavy son of a b----h is in my garage.  It has to weigh 750 pounds, maybe more.  Keymaster has it correct.  It is sitting on 6 inch peg legs.  It wouldn't go in a 16 foot box truck upright because it wouldn't clear the door by one lousy inch so the guys had to lay it on it's back.  Thank God for lift gates getting it off the truck and back on the ground.  George, Brent and I wrestled that S.O.B. on to the lift gate and used the lift gate to ease it down and slide down onto it's peg legs.  Next.....wouldn't clear my roll up garage door by about 3 inches.  Brent had a hand truck that we were able to ease it over to scoot under the door.  Got it inside the garage and the tires on the hand truck promptly went flat!  "Walked" it into the corner.

It is one of those good news/bad news deals.  Plugged it in and it started running.  However, pretty sure it's not cooling.  Will call my refrigeration buddy and get him to come take a look.  It is unplugged as I wasn't comfortable letting it run all night unchecked.

I have one pic below that I took with a cellphone after I cleaned the doors on it.  For reference, the top of the compressor is 7 feet 2 inches from the floor.  Not about to show you the interior yet.  Needs a LOT of elbow grease.  So it's a work in progress but so far so good.  Jan said if it doesn't work it will make a great storage cabinet! ;D  Gotta love that girl, she is an absolute trooper.

Sweet! If it has dead stuff in it try using Consan Triple Action 20 from your local nursery. Just coat it down and let it work over night. It is a fungie side that eats the organic stuff and will kill the smell at the source. After that just wipe it down real good with a weak bleach solution and dry it out and your good to go.

Thanks Ronbeaux.  Nothing dead in it but I may still take your advice and see if I can find that stuff as it is pretty grungy inside.  Sure as heck couldn't hurt!

Once you lay down a big boy like that, it will need 24 hours or so to get the freon back in order. Don't give up just yet.

You should be able to get that fridge going for a couple hundred dollars long as your refrigeration guy works for Beer. One thing to check for is the interior fans, if they arent spinning you wont have any cooling. same with the fan blowing on the Evaporator coil on top. Good Luck!!!
Title: Re: Garage frig!
Post by: KyNola on October 06, 2011, 06:44:11 AM
Thanks for the advice Key.  The fan on the evaporator coils is definitely spinning but I don't think the interior fans are turning.

I can't find a brand name or model number plate anywhere on that thing.  Did find one plate that said "Property of the Mayflower.  Do not remove." ;D
