Title: movies
Post by: car54 on January 19, 2008, 08:02:39 PM
I just watched a movie and was impressed by it. A nun's story with Audrey Hepburn made in 1959. She is one of my favorite actresses. I like all types of movies with a good story. What movies impress Bradley smoker forum members?

Up in Smoke, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Porky's, Animal House :D....not really (well maybe when I was a teenager). I'd have to say Tombstone is one of my all time favorites.

Ridgemont high and porky's were good. Another favorite of my is Valley Girls. The music was great. Ridgemont high reminds me of my high school days

Highlander   is my favorite.

But if we're going with more of the classics - tie between Gone with the Wind and Ninotchka.

Geez, if Audrey is the nun, Gregory Peck must have been the soldier.  I liked this movie.  I was surprised, to tell the truth.  But I like any WWII movie and this one had a lot to offer.  I think the movie was a Nun's Story.  And as I'm about to post I see that Car54 actually mentioned this movie by name (should be paying more attention).

My favorites-- I love movies, but here's an over simplification:
Godfather (and II), hence the handle
Apocalypse Now
Blazing Saddles (and most other Mel Brooks movie)
Master and Commander
Breaking Away (the bike movie)
The Great Escape
Casablanca

FYI: I like Highlander, but IMHO, the rest of the series suck.  And of course love the Porky's (how can't you on a smoker site), Animal House, etc.  Just waiving the colors for the favorites.

The Wizard of Oz. Still watch it when it comes on tv. I can't wait until the grandkids are a little older to watch it. :)
Oh yeah, The March of the Wooden Soldiers with Laurel & Hardy. Those 2 were the best.
Showing my age. hahaha

Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and many other Sci Fi's, Highlander, M.A.S.H. most westerns, and most movies that carry a lot of meaning.  Not fond of comedies that get too far on the stupid side.

The Outlaw Josey Whales, Caddy Shack, All Mel Brooks movies, Ronin, Die Hard, Sneakers, Get Shorty, Airplane and most John Wayne westerns.

After watching The Nun's Story yesterday, I watched Good Bye Mr Chips. What an A1 movie. I have never seen it before. Usually I do not watch 2 movies in a row but they were both excellent.

Sci Fi   The Day The Earth Stood Still was the movie that got me going on Sci Fi along with The War Of The Worlds. The Day The Earth Stood Still is still a very current movie. I watched it at an art theater 2 months ago for free. Don't forget about Dune

How about The Swimmer with Burt Lancaster, Come Back Little Shepa, with Burt Lancaster and Shirley Booth, Papa's Delicate condition with Jackie Gleason, Pi and The Never Ending Story. I could keep going on but I won't.

Do you remember the movies that Don Knots made?

Here is an excellent site for researching movies. The Internet Movie Database

I thought I was the only person who liked Pi.

As for Sci Fi, Mystery Science Theater 3000 used to crack me up

John Wayne movies: my favorites are The Searchers and In Harm's Way.

Mystery Science Theater 3000  would crack me up also. What a great show. One of my favorite TV series was Twin Peaks. The music was great in that show. Another good one was The Avengers out of England.

If we are going from movies into TV - it's not too difficult to guess one of mine . . .

Dr Who - the longest running sci fi series ever - been running since 1963

Also up there is Enterprise, Good Eats with Alton Brown and Battlestar Galactica (both the original and the new)

Heard about MST3K but never really watched it.

Westerns are my favorite. John Wayne , Jimmy Stewart , Kirk Douglass , and the like.

But my single  #1 of all time is " It's a Wonderful Life"......not a western...go figure.

One Sci Fi movie that I really like is The Lathe Of Heaven made in 1980 was the same titled book by Ursala Le Guin.
It is a low budget movie made for PBS I believe. I think that there is also a newer version. Here is a link.

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0081036/ (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0081036/).

One neat Sci Fi movie that gets you thinking. Here a a brief comment from someone else and I whole heartily agree.

Science fiction is a literature of ideas. Science fiction movies, however, are usually typified by their lack of ideas (although often fun for all that).

The novel "The Lathe of Heaven" was chock full of ideas, and the movie didn't sell the book short. Just about everything in Le Guin's vision about how the road to, uhhh, insomnia is paved with good intention came right across in this TV movie adaptation. I wish I could see it again.

Science fiction wouldn't have such a reputation for silliness if other movies took such pains to match the quality of "The Lathe of Heaven's" intellectual effects instead of matching "Star Wars's" special effects.

More of the same, except this one has more, if you know what I mean. ;) ;D

Midevil Jousting and Swordfighting to great rock music is just plain fun!  Cheesy but still fun  ;D

Scotty-G,
A Knight's Tale is one of my favorite fun movies. The music is great. I did not realize that HeathLedger, who just died was the lead actor. I have watched this movie 5 or 6 times. Another movie that I put in this class is Flash Gordon made in 1980. Again great music and action.

Gotta go with the Lord of The Rings series, Original Star Wars trilogy (I like the new ones also, but not as much) Caddy Shack (for comedy), The Thing (with Kurt Russell), The Harry Potter's, Valley Girl (Music is great), There are soooo many good ones. We have a huge DVD collection, so it's hard to choose.

Get Shorty
Godfather I and II
Clerks
Chasing Amy(anything by Kevin Smith makes me laugh)

Thanks.  I dunno about cousins, could be, but I don't get into genealogy very deep.  At least I know there's a couple of people on here that don't think that movie lineup is wierd. :D

Hey Consig,
It's good to be posting again, even on an erratic schedule.

I forgot about Moonstruck.  I also forgot about:

The Road to Perdition
Gangs of New York (Loved Daniel Day-Lewis in that one)
The Departed
Casino
Goodfellas

Yea, there's definitely a theme to me............now, if I can't find a job soon, it may be time to bring the movies to life  ;D

Also not movies but series I enjoyed thoroughly:

Sopranos
Deadwood

Thanks for the kind words, gumbah. ;)

Lots of great recommendations here and i agree with so many!

One of my all time top movies is Winged Migration.  It's a lot like a documentary but has a very engaging story line that is unlike a "regular" movie.  They got birds comfortable flying next to ultralight aircraft and filmed the birds as they migrated thousands of miles.  It may sound a bit dorky, but it's a wonderful film.  The "Making of..." in the special features is as good or better than the movie.  I've seen it on sale for $7 or $8 in places - heck it's at least worth a rent!  Enjoy!

Bought it about a month ago, or so, and finally viewed it Sunday night.  Could have done without one scene, but that one made another a whole lot funnier than it would have been without it.............I'll be watching it again. :)

GREAT LISTS!!
My son opened an account for me at Netflix for Christmas and now I'm addicted. Over 90,000 movies to choose from and with their rating feature and forums in all genres you can't beat it. All the favorites are there, weather it be classic movies, TV shows, documentaries, TV or cable channel series and all the current stuff. Very reasonable plans available and with an unlimited 3 disc plan you can easily view 15 a month for about a buck apiece. All this is done through the mail and you never have to lift a pen. Does this sound like a commercial? Sorry. Anyway, I haven't stumped them yet and got some pretty obscure films like "Blood Feast" and "Two Thousand Maniacs" which only showed at drive-ins back in the sixties. Check it out. ;D ;D

You're right on, Artmiester. I (we) have been members for over a year now. I've watched more movies since I've been a member than I've seen in my whole life. I wasn't real pleased at first with their turnaround time. It would take 6 or 7 days from when I mailed one out until I got the next one. They have since opened a new center about 3 hours away. If I mail one out on Monday, I'll have the next one by Wednesday or Thursday at the latest. Now the wife wants a Blu-Ray DVD player... ::) :-\
Title: Re: movies
Post by: Artmiester on March 20, 2008, 06:46:49 AM
Hi Ontrack,
Yeah, it all depends on where the mailing center's located. Mine's only 4 miles away. If I mail one back on Monday I'll get one back Tuesday or the latest, Wednesday. My son has quit watching broadcast TV except for the news (CNN) and catches up on series he missed (sans commercials) and current movies. Also the more ratings you enter the better your recomendations get. Also went to the 4 disc plan and made a profile for the wife with one disc so she can watch her romance-kissy-face stuff and documentaries at her leisure.  It's great! ;D ;D

Life Aquatic

At Play in the Fields of the Lord
Rob Roy

My six year old watched Charlottes Web and the whole movie is about a pig not wanting to go in the smoker.  The film included sinister and scary shots of the smoke shed.  He asked me some direct questions about my OBS after that.  I told him.  We ate smoked pork the next day.  Good boy.
