Just got a phone call from Steve (DarqMan).
He was on his way HomeTuesday nite and was within a 1/4 mile from his House.
He said it was right at dark and two does jumped out in front of him and just
stop .... and he couldn't.
He is in the Hospital in Oklahoma City with a bad gash to his head, shattered collar
bone and multifractured ribs. He told me He is lucky to be here. Someone came by
and called Police and Ambulance.
They are trying to decide if they need to do surgery on his collar bone and said he
should know something tomorrow.
He also told me that as soon as he is released, he would post a # for anyone that
wanted to call.
One of the does got away, one didn't.
Keep Him in your thoughts and prayers.
Man that sucks!
Prayers sent!
Hope all goes well and for a speedy recovery.
Added to the list of those needing prayers.
Ross
OUCH! Man I hate that for him. Please let him know we're all thinking of him. Harley's are easy to replace, Darqman isn't.
That's not good! Well wishes sent.
Oh that sucks big time. He will never forgive me for mentioning the bike-deer accident thing. Having been through one of those, glad to here that he is in reasonable shape. No doubt a lot of pain and bike gone (insured I trust), but alive and able to fight again (after healing).
Hang in there Steve and get well soon!
That is sad to hear.. Prayers and well wishes from nepas.
Man, that sucks. Prayers for healing.
I'm so sorry to hear such bad news; I could feel his enjoyment in reading his post of the new Harley. Best wisher and Prayers for a speedy and full recovery!
Prayers for a complete and speedy recovery sent.
if there is anything i can do let me know.
Man that sucks! He just got that new ride.
Steve just Text me and they told him no surgery at this point.
He has 5 broken Ribs.
Said his collar bone is in pieces.
I will be talking with Him in the morning, and I will update the Forum.
Steven,
Hoping for your speedy recovery! Glad surgery isn't needed.
Bryan
Hang in there Steve were here to if you need us!!
Best wishes sent.
Dang and he was so pumped about getting back on a bike.
Sorry to hear about your accident. Get well soon.
Daeqman,
Not much to say but WOW! I pray for a good and proper healing.
Brad
Our prayers are with you. I hope you mend well and soon.
Glad to hear no surgery at this point. 5 broken ribs, d@mn those things hurt. I broke 4 a few years back so I can certainly sympathize with Steve. Pile a shattered collar bone on top of that and you've got some real hurt!
Hang in there buddy!
Man o man, Darq, don't know what to say, except get well quick, hope they give you something to keep the pain down - way down, and I'll be praying for a complete and total recovery. There must be something about Harleys and does - not the first I have heard about.
My best wishes to DM. Does he at least get to keep the deer?

In Illinois you can, if there isn't massive internal damage to the animal. (not sure who determines that)

A 9mm should take care of that.
Steven,
Get well soon.
Deb
Dang, Darq, sorry to hear this...
Hope you get well soon, but I know it will take a while...
I'm hurtin' just thinkin' about it.
If nothing else works, take two glasses of Maker's Mark and call me in the morning.
So sorry to hear about this. Were praying for Steven and seems the rest of this great forum is as well.
Get well soon and get back home a hospital is no place to heal. Believe me, I have spent more then 29 days in one over the last 4 years!
UPDATE:
Just talked to Steve and they released him from the Hospital and he went
to stay with his Parents who live in Oklahoma City. He didn't know his
immediate plans. He said his left arm is strapped in a sling that can not be
taken off for at least three weeks. I read him the comments and He very
much appreciated the kind words and thoughts of everyone.
Thanks for the update CRG, Man i hate to hear of a fellow rider going down.
Please let us know if there is anything we can do.
And let him know that many, are here for him.
Wow just read this. So sorry to hear about this Darqman. But I am so glad you are alive. I have gone to too many bike riders funerals in the last 6 years since all the guys at work got into riding. Glad yours isn't one. Get well soon. I know your pain as you may have heard about my shoulder. Heres to your speedy recovery.
Take good care Darqman, best wishes for a speedy discovery.
Praying for you Darqman,
Carolyn
Glad to see you're outa the hospital, thats great news!
Get well soon ;)
Wow... I just read this today as well.... Holy crap Darqman, that's some serous healing ya gotta do. I certainly hope everything goes good for you and will be thinking about ya for sure. I see Sonny is puttin' together a big feed bag for ya. Awesome... absolutely awesome Sonny.
With Sonny's help you'll back at it in no time!
Mike
UPDATE:
Talk to Steve this afternoon and it sounded like his meds are working! ;D
He told me that everyday he is a little more sore than the day before.
He is re-thinking his time line of staying with his parents and thinks he
will be there longer than he orig thought.
Thanks for the update.
Thank you all for the prayers and the get well wishes. This forum has the best group of folks!
I'm at home now and just wanted to make a quick reply to thank you all for thinking of me. The wounds will heal and I will ride again, BUT... I WILL be wearing a helmet from now on. I was so lucky I didn't crack my skull open. The emergency room doctor reminded me of this fact every stitch he put in! I have pics and stories but they would just ruin everyone's appetite for BBQ (ask CRG, they're ugly) so I won't get into the ugly details.
it feels good to have friends like you that care. Thank you all.
Steve
Good to see you feeling a little better.
Call if you need anything!
Steve - so glad you did not crack that skull open. Wishing you the best!
Glad to hear you're on the mend...
When you're ready, I suggest one of those geeky-looking "cop" helmets (the ones that look like an upside-down bowl).
On a hot day, they don't build up as much heat (passing out from heat ain't a good idea rolling on 2 wheels).
Also, with "full" helments, if you land just right, the back bottom can break your neck (and that ain't good either).
Awrighten.
Glad to hear you are home.
I'm glad to hear you're home.
Steve, we're gonna get you something with a little more protection then a helmet...
Glad you're recovering and can enjoy the benefits of modern medicinal chemistry (i.e., drugs). Helmets are a pain but, in my opinion, a must. If it weren't for a helmet I wouldn't be sitting here typing this. In a very similar type of accident (hit a deer on a bike when I was doing 60 mph) the helmet definitely saved my life.
Get well soon !

I like that one - :) ;) :D ;D ;D
Get well Steve!
Darqman -
Just got back in town and read this post. First let me say I am glad you are home and recovering. I am glad to hear that you are going to buy a helmet before you ride again. I have personally lost two good friends due to riding without a helmet and it really hurts when you know they would have survived if they had a helmet on. You definitely had someone looking over your shoulder that day! Get we soon my fellow smoker....
You know I don't think its the helmets...IT'S THOSE DAM DEER. I don't think they should be aloud to play in traffic anymore. Seriously.. and don't tell my wife, but I literaly came within 6 inches of my final day on earth. It happened at about 2:30 am monday morning. I was heading to Blue River in central B.C. in a torrential down pour. They had been doing work on the roads there for a couple of months now and had the concrete barriers remove so the road was wide open to the 30 foot drop into a white water section of the Thompson river. It was raining so hard I could barely see the road so I was doing maybe 50 mph. I came around a corner and there was 4 deer chasing each other around on the road. I hit the binders as hard as I could which cause my 20 foot trailer to jack knife around toward the river. It was a lite load which is probably what saved me from going completely over the egde but my front axle was hooked over the edge and with the trailer sideways I could not move. The trucker behind me stopped it time to not hit me which may have shoved me over the edge anyway. He hooked a chain to the side of my trailer and cause the roads were wet and the light load he managed to pull the trailer straight and then get my front wheel on the road again. I am seriously looking for a new career. 2 close calls in one year is more than I have had in 22 years altogether. I don't mean to take from this post for Darqman but I think those deer should be banned from the roads. ;D ;D I sure hope you feel better soon Darqman. Glad you will smoke again.
I have been absent from the forum for a bit and just read this. Darqman, I am glad that you are feeling better. In my younger days when I was at the Fire Department we called those types of accidents "Murder Cycle" accidents. Picking up lots and lots of guys that were not so lucky it sure made be a believer in helmets.
best wishes and speedy recovery

Where did you hide the skivvys Q? Or was you wearing that Orange G-string that everyone has been eluding to on this forum?
Laughter is the best medicine!! If nothing else I made Darqman smile ;D

I talked with Steve today and He told me a group of co-workers came and picked him
up Today and brought him to the Office.
Said it was sure nice to get out for a bit and that he even did a little work.
I think he might try it again tomorrow.
Steve works for a great Boss! They are looking out for Him!
I, too, have been away from the boards for a while.
All the best from a fellow HD rider!
Just thought I'd give a quick update on my progress. As CRG mentioned, I went in for a few hours last Thursday. Thursday night I was soo sore so didn't go in Friday. Today, I went in for a couple hours and then came home. Feels good to get out and be a productive member of society.
Tomorrow, I have an 11am Dr's appointment to get the stitches in my head and above my left eye removed and then I'll go into the office for a while again.
Sunday a BBQ buddy of mine came over with a slab of pear smoked ribs, ABT's, Ceasar Salad and stir fried snap peas. That was the most food I've eaten in 3 weeks and was indeed a special treat.
DM ... good to see signs of life ! You've been missed.
Welcome back !
Take it easy and do what you can Darqman. Don't want to overdo it and set back any of the healing. We need you to be around for awhile.
Happy to see you back DM :D
Welcome back Darq! Good to see you're up and around some!
Nice to hear from you DM!
Good to see you on board.
Take it easy and get well, but you have been missed!
Good to see you back on the board.
Great to see you back from the Darq side. ;D Glad you are up and about somewhat. Take it cool and don't try to do too much.
Darq, I am so sorry to hear about this. Seemore and I have been doing our summer 'camping' thing and have not been home to get on the Forum.
God speed your recovery! I am glad to hear that you are getting up and about - I can't imagine the pain you've endured - like Quarlow.
You are in our prayers. Take care.

Most definitely!
So glad to see your progress is positive and you are healing! Keep it up!
Thanks for all the get well wishes from everyone. I'm making great progress and knowing I have friends makes everything a lot easier. I snapped a pic of them hauling my scooter off to the be repaired. Looking at the pic and considering what it did to me it's hard to believe this bike took a 45mph spill. It's hard to see but the front fender is bent and has deer hair and of course the chrome guards are scratched up pretty bad. These Ultra Classics are tough bikes!

It looks brand new to me...
You sure didn't make this story up so that monkey would cook for you? ;D
The scooter will get fixed. You just need to keep takin care of yourself.
And ..................
Get yourself a DAMN helmet!
I've been shopping for one online already. I don't plan on riding it until I get one.

Good to hear you are on the mend. Keep eating what CRG sent and you'll rebound quickly.
Just for comparison, when I hit a deer (broadside at 60) the front fork was bent badly enough to place the wheel back at the foot rest and the front tire was packed with deer hair beyween the bead of the tire and the rim of the wheel for about a third of the circumference. The hair was in there so tightly you couldn't pull it out by hand.
You must have been on one of those Japanese bikes instead of a Harley? ;D ;D ;D
Seriously though, I'm glad you're here to share your experience like I am. I've heard all kinds of nightmares regarding others who weren't as lucky regarding motorcycle/animal collisions.

Keep getting better DM. Ever thought of sharing pics and preaching to other riders to wear a helmet? I usually dont wear one around town but do when I hit open highway. I know I should wear one all the time!
It's likely more dangerous riding around town than on the highway.

I uploaded the pics of my head to photobucket and was going to send the links to those who wanted to see them, but the images violated their acceptable use policy.
The first year rode I wore a full face helmet. The second year I graduated to a half shell, then I decided to no wear any helmet. I think I'm going back to a full face, at least for a while.
Glad You made it through the worst part Darqman! Have the doctors said when you can get back to the smoker? ;)
If needed we will just have to send you some treats for now!

Mike,
I'm going to fire the smoker up this weekend but someone else will be doing the lifting and what not. I'll be baste boy ;D
Thank you for the kind thoughts. classicrockgriller loaded me up with all kinds of BBQ treats so I'm all set in that area but thank you so much.
The insurance company called today and the total damages to the bike totaled $10,547.28. That's right, you heard me right. Turns out the frame was bent where the left engine guard attaches and the entire frame is being replaced. Estimate for repairs is 6 weeks due to the time it will take to get parts from Harley. Gives me plenty of time to shop for a helmet. ;D
Geez!
When shopping for that new brain bucket, keep in mind to get one that's not only DOT certified, but also rated by the Snell Foundation with a M certification, I think the latest should be M10, but don't know when the last specs came out, may be M05.
Thanks for the tips. I'm shopping online now. I'll probably try some on before I decide. Snell approved is a bit more difficult to find.
Yeah, but I trust them a lot more than just the DOT. lol. They have 2 specifications that I know of...M for Motorcycle, and SA for Specialty Applications such as stock car racing and drags. If all else fails, try the Bell or Simpson sites...I have an open face Bell and a full face Simpson, but I'll probably have to get a new one when I start riding...the Bell is M90, and the Simpson is M95. Just couldn't get any SA's to fit when I was racing. I know better now.
Wishing Steve the best and a speedy recovery.
