Folks, it's time to start making plans to attend the BBQ on the River in Paducah KY. The dates of the event are 9/26-9/28. Over 60 tons of chicken and pork will be cooked over 3 days. 50 teams will compete for Grand Champion. All will be serving the public as well. 50,000 members of the public to be more exact. In addition to the teams, there will be at least 50 vendors selling everything from fried pickles to pork chop sandwiches. The best part? All of the net proceeds go to a charity that a team or vendor individually chooses and sponsors. This is 3 days of food, fun, beer and music.
I know of one forum member who plans to be here and another who is tentatively planning on being here. I will let them disclose who they are. If you need any help with directions or accommodations contact me and I will be more than happy to assist.
what a large crowd to make meals for,, and a wonderful time to have by all
These boys roll in some serious equipment for this... Pretty impressive to get behind the scenes and see it in action.

;D ;D ;D
Bumping this thread as I've had some contact from other forum members about the event.
I know a couple and a small furry kid that will be there ;D
We're hoping to make it and see what's happening and visit with our new friends.
I would love to go but were swamped at work and there is no way I could get off after just getting back on Tuesday. :(
I heard that BAM1 and his lovely wife are looking towards coming if the stars align correctly.
Anybody else up for 60+ tons of pulled pork, ribs, chicken, whole hog and beef brisket? Brisket is not a judged category but over the last few years a lot of folks are serving some seriously good beef brisket.
Come one, come all.
Looks like a fun event!
It's official we'll be there, booked the room already and looking forward to getting up there. We'll be there Friday morning sometime after leaving Texas after work Thursday. ;D
I'd love to be there, but we already have plans for that weekend. :(

Change your plans! ;D
Man I would live to make that one day.
Counting down the days!
Bumping this again as the time is drawing nearer. Jan and I are both judging whole hogs again this year. NePaS is also going to be judging a category and I'm working on a slot for Saber 4 to be judging as well.
Still not too late to come join the fun. I hear NePaS is bringing some sticks, jerky and NePaS Kool Aid. Robert is bringing some goodies as well. I'll dig around and see what I can come up with.
If you need help with directions and/or accommodations, please contact me. Jan and I will be moving downtown across the street from the festivities on Wednesday 9/25 and will be staying until Sunday 9/29.
You don't want to miss this event!!!
Can't wait to get there, anyone who can should really consider coming it looks to be a fun time and lots to eat of course
Got E-mail confirmation on Friday that I went from being an alternate judge for the American Royal to being selected to judge The American Royal. We're also competing Sept 21st in Des Moines for the Kings of BBQ KCBS comp. The boss said I couldn't have all three weekends off in a row so the river is going to have to wait until next year.
Sounds like you gonna be a busy tired smoker before it's all done.
Brian, that is awesome! Was looking forward to seeing you and your pretty bride but you can't pass up those events. We'll look forward to seeing you for the 20th BBQ on the River.
Hopefully our paths will cross before that Larry. Put in to judge the Royal back in Feb. pretty excited
I'll try to remember the river contest for next year. Me and my buddy are entered in the Royal Open. We do a couple comps per year for fun. This is our first Royal. Can't wait. Maybe I'll see you there BAM 1!
Around 2 weeks to go. So how many from here are attending?

We'll be there Friday and Saturday, driving up from Texas after the wife gets off work Thursday so it'll be an all-nighter.
Right now it appears that it will be Saber 4 and his lovely wife Judy, NePaSmoker and his lovely wife Chrystal and Jan and me. Some folks may show up at the last minute unannounced. Look for us sitting on the fringe as in sitting outside at a table at Shandie's, at the corner of Broadway and Market House Square (2nd street for the local folks).
Ya gots to have a home base so when folks go their separate ways they know where to meet back up later.
Leaving the 25th, going to just cruise and see the country.

Smooth sipping, It'l put lead in yer pencil :o :o
That just screams wheelbarrow time for somebody!!
Looking good.
The latest development for this year's BBQ Festival. On Thursday at noon they are going to have a "cook it in your backyard competition" for folks who want to dip their toe in the water of competing. It's for backyard BBQers. They will cook ribs and/or pork butts and bring them to the competition for judging. They have asked Jan and I to judge in that competition. Then, on Saturday when the BBQ teams compete Jan and I will be judging whole hogs again this year and our very own NePaS will be judging chickens. Yes, the very same NePaS who hates chicken will be judging chicken!
For those of you who are on Facebook and have an interest in the BBQ Festival there is a Facebook page. It is listed as Barbecue on the River. They are updating it as preparations for the Festival are well underway.
Hope to see more of you at the Festival. If you like BBQ, beer, good food in general and music Paducah KY is the place to be 9/26-9/28.
UPDATE: It was disclosed yesterday that the BBQ teams have pre-ordered 80,000 pounds of meat (that 40 tons folks!). No doubt they will all run out and order at least another 40,000 pounds during the Festival.
They'll start moving in this weekend. By next Tuesday evening hickory smoke will be rolling in downtown Paducah.
Did I mention this is a free event? You only pay for what you eat or drink. Everything else is 100% free and all net proceeds go to charities. No prize money is awarded and the teams don't make a dime. Recoup their expenses and that's it.
Take lots of pictures guys. Don't get tipped over on that peachy stuff
I wish I were not so far away, and could afford the time to join in the festivities and meet some of you folks.
Five more days till we head to Paducah! It's almost as bad as waiting for Santa Claus was when we were kids. ;D
It's right around the corner kids! Come one come all.
Thursday can't get here fast enough....
Is that hickory smoke i smell ;D
And the very latest development, Saber 4 will also be judging chickens at the BBQ Festival competition on Saturday. That's right folks, 4 members of the Bradley Forum will be judging in the 19th ever Barbecue on the River Festival competition. NePaS and Saber 4 will be over in the chicken competition judging area while Jan and I will be on 2 different whole hog judging teams.
Rick and Robert, one word of advice. SKIP BREAKFAST!!!!!! ;D
Good thing im not going I couldn't eat that much chicken! Yuck!!!
Leaving Texas in an hour and a half Paducah or Bust! :)
Headed down tomorrow after work.
We're having a big annual BBQ competition about 1 1/2 miles from my house this Fri - Sun or I'd be tempted to bike down there Saturday for a few hours.
2 AM and we just got settled into our room in Paducah to catch a nap before the festivities.
WAKE UP!! We got BBQ to eat and Judy has to go to the National Quilt Museum.
Yesterday was the first day of the Festival. Typically on Thursday night you can still navigate fairly well through the crowd. Not this time. It was packed! I can only imagine what Friday and Saturday nights will bring.

Just a few quick shots.
I was there for my first time last year on at saturday. I was there from 11-3 maybe and never thought it was too crowded. Guess it gets busy at night?
QuoteNot this time. It was packed! I can only imagine what Friday and Saturday nights will bring.
That is because of the celebrity judges you brought in. Everybody wants to meet them and learn from their wisdom, even if wheelbarrows are involved. :o ;D
You guys are gonna have some good times. I am going to try and make it next year for sure!
Friday afternoon and the gang is hanging out at Base Camp Shandie's

Forgot to take pictures of the jerky rounds and snack sticks Rick brought before we devoured them, got to get some sleep now to be ready for the chicken judging breakfast of champions at 8:30 AM
Looks like your having a lot of fun. :)
Judy and I just got back to the motel room for the night and I have to say this was an awesome weekend with good friends, fun times and lots to eat including stuff that was made and brought by Rick and me. Then Larry surprised us this morning with our own batches of Jan's rub made by Jan herself and some Blazing Pistachios. I have to say that judging chicken for the first time was a good and interesting experience and getting to see one of the whole hogs as it went in the team's smoker and as it came out the next day for judging was fun. I want to say a special thank you to Larry and Jan for being such good hosts and making us feel welcome in their town and to Rick for sharing his recipes and knowledge with me, and to Chrystal for keeping Rick in the wheelbarrow and off the Segway Friday night. If you can find a way to join this bunch for next year's 20th BBQ on the River you will have a good time for sure. Now all that's left is to meet Rick and Chrystal for breakfast in the morning at Bob Evans and start the 9 1/2 hour run for Texas.
Another BBQ on the River is in the books for Jan and me. I can't thank Saber and Judy and NePaS and Chrystal enough for making incredible long drives just to come to Paducah. Jan and I both judged whole hogs again this year and it is without a doubt the best judging job in this competition.
Saber has left out something he brought to the Festival along with a lot of serious good jerky. He brought 2 bags of homemade smoked party mix or Chex mix, whatever you call them. The difference is he modifies the ingredients of the mix and modifies it really well. THEN he seasons them two different ways. One is really good "as is" and then........there is the batch Rick and I nicknamed "Double Stuff". Seriously good and that bag came home with me!
Of course (at my whining request) Rick brings a large bag of those salami sticks that he has perfected along with a large bag of jerky wafers. Rick might have also brought some peach flavored refreshing beverage too.
Once again, thanks to Rick, Chrystal, Robert and Judy for making the long trip and thanks to the many members of the forum who contacted us either by Forum, email or text to keep up with what we were up to.
Mark your calendars for next years 20th ever Barbecue on the River in Paducah KY. I understand they have some very special things already planned since it is the 20th! You won't want to miss it.
I'll send you the recipe when I get back to Texas :)
I know you guys had a great time a sitting there "People Watching!".
Sounds like a lot of fun. We're finishing our annual Wildwood BBQ bash (http://www.101sports.com/event/2013-wildwood-bbq-bash-september-28th-29th/) this afternoon. 100 booths this year and over 50,000 people attended last year's event. If it had not been for it being held the same weekend as this one was I might have hopped on the Honda and ridden down there for a few hours yesterday. Maybe next year.
Sounds like y'all had a great time. Marking my calendar for next year.
The BBQ was great fun.
Thanks Larry & Jan for the great hospitality and showing us around.
Robert & Judy
The jerky and chex mix was excellent.
Very nice seeing you both again.
Will be posting pics soon. We made it to Columbia SC for the night then onto get tiffy and then home.
Ya never know where we may end up.
