I want to get a smoker now.
the obs is on sale here for 280, reg 380.
should I wait for the dbs price to drop..it currently sits at 500.
Will be obs be good enough for me to use here....mixed meats, game, fish etc. or pay the extra to have better control over the temp, etc.
I would recommend the OBS (and possibly with a PID if you want or need tight temp control) based on the prices you stated.
I agree with Wildcat, I run an OBS with a PID and could'nt be more happy. You don't have to use a PID and still turn out some amazing food! Either way you go, OBS or DBS, you'll be very pleased! Good Luck!

Yep a very precise temp control. Auber makes a plug and play PID, can't remember the exact price. I built mine with the plans from the recipe site cost was about $100 bucks. Here's the link!

I agree with the rest. The OBS with a PID is perfect.
Here is the link for the PID. http://auberins.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=14

Is the obs great alone though...until I get the pid?
If so I will get it today.
pumped.
Headed to the cottage so will be smoking up some fish this weekend.
Any pointers on them?
The OBS without the PID is just fine. There are only 3 reasons to get a PID. 1- Tight temp control to limit fluctuation for making sausage, etc. 2- More set it and forget it smoking (an extension of #1 and why I have one). 3- You just like gadgets. For most things like brisket, butts, ribs, chicken, etc., a PID is not needed - just a convienance.
