Title: Salt in biltong makes it unhealthy?
Post by: dannyd on August 30, 2009, 11:53:23 AM
Hi everyone.

I love biltong and have done so ever since coming across it as a SA friends house about 6 years ago.

I have always wondered however about its salt content. Apparently the Food Standards Agency says you should eat no more than 6 grams of salt a day (including salt already found in the food we eat) otherwise you significantly risk high blood pressure and heart disease.

What do you guys think? Biltong tastes pretty salty most of the time. Does that make it unhealthy? Especially since it is quite addictive! Very Happy

thanks for the feedback guys!

The biltong I made (using a recipe posted here) does not seem overly salty, at least compared to jerky.

Having said that, I probably take in more salt than I should, but as long as the numbers from the Dr. are not bad, I keep going the way I have been...
