Anybody in the Buffalo area?
I think I have found a way to smuggle some MTQ across the border with a guy who is doing some work for me up here from Buffalo. I am thinking about getting him to pick me up some MTQ but I need a source for him that is almost guaranteed to have it. Then I can buy him lunch or some or something and I get to make some cured stuff in my DBS.
I am in Minnesota but I got mine at a Byerly's grocery store.
do a google search of groc stores in Buffalo.
Morton has a product finder utility on their web site. I got the guys zip and pulled the name, address and phone for each. It looks like Wegmans has the market cornered in Buffalo for this stuff. I cannot wait. Cue Homer Simpson..... b a c o n ........... b a c o n ........
Glad for ya......hope you can find away to hold on to your Bradley.
I am trying to do both. I am liking the dryer vent idea, maybe an upgrade of the exhaust fan over the stove. I think I can pull this off and will have some bacon to boot before its over and done.
oak,
I live on the otherside of NY near Vermont. I purchased my MQT at a local Walmart Super Center (Walmart that sells food too). You could have him check a Walmart in Buffalo?

Sausage Maker is located in Buffalo, you should be able to find it there easily. :) You should give some thought to purchasing Instacure #1. It is cheaper and more versatile, and you can make your own TQ substitute.
EDITED
Whoop! I just checked their website and they don't sell it. But like I said earlier, Instacure #1 is more versatile.
If you are having trouble getting Mortons TQ in your area I could always run up the road to Stuffers here in Langley and send it out to you. They have an online store also. http://www.stuffers.com/
Ross
I looked for MTQ locally and couldn't find it. The online places charge more for shipping than the MTQ itself!
My secret agent man is on the the lookout for MTQ for me today
It is his mission and he has accepted it
I will wait eagerly for hiim to report back
This is a casual business acquaintance that is doing me a favour so I can only hope Wegmans comes through
Its ridiculous that stuff is not sold in Canada. I will be trying to reverse engineer the recipe if I even get some and maybe blow
my smoker up one day..... LOL
If not I will have to do one of those cross border shopping trips one day
This is very close to being the same as TQ.
Basic Dry Cure (http://www.susanminor.org/forums/showthread.php?t=441)
For home use sodium nitrate is not needed for quick curing meats. If you feel you need to duplicate the formula here is an approximation you can start with.
Salt = 78%
Sugar ~ 21%
Sodium Nitrite = .5%
Sodium Nitrate = .5%
propylene glycol ~ 1%
Propylene glycol is used to keep the mixture uniform.
I never thought I would say this .....
I AM SO EXCITED !
Just got word from my Buffalo friend advising of our secret rendevous point for the delivery of my MTQ
Have to be a little clandestine lest the Canadian authorities thing I am curing myslef to death to blow myself up or something !
I think I have enough to last the rest of my life !
Tonight I will be dreaming of curing loins in my fridge and bacon sizzling in the pan about a month from now
This is like winning the lottery ! Wait till I get to Costco... I see a very full cart in my future.
You go OS..
Irony... Canadians cannot get supplies to make bacon.....
It is ironic isnt it ?
We can pay ridiculous prices for pre made but there since there is a possibility that we could get hurt making it, well forget it.
Kind of like running with scissors, eh....
I figure after I pay for this, buy my secret agent breakfast, head to Coscto and pick up a loin, I will be ahead of the game with my first batch, never mind the self actualization from having done it myself.

That is what makes it all worth while and it also Makes it taste a whole lot better.

Oakville, I can get the Morton TQ at my local Co-op store here in Calgary. You have anything similar in your neck of the woods?
No co ops here in the big city ! do they only do in store or on line?
I should have enough MTQ to last for a while. But it was becoming my life's work to get some of this stuff and at 7 AM my initial mission will be accomplished.
We have big box stores and super stores that dont sell brisketts or butts.
ahh yes, life in the big city.

Unfortunately it is only in store. They don't have online sales. You might also try http://www.halfordhide.com , they sell a whole bunch of cures online. Not sure if they have Morton's, but they have quite a large selection of stuff. Not sure on shipping charges.
Fellow Cannucklehead
Thank you much. This is very interesting. They have praque powder and the Bradley cures.
They will even ship by mai. I will be inquiring about shipping charges
Have you ordered anything from these guys? Any experiences to share?
I have ordered some stuff from them in the past (Bradley Cures, 15 lb freezer bags, and a few other items) and they were very good, although I just went down to their store and picked it up, so no shipping). Very good customer service though.
