Title: kid in a candy store...
Post by: squirtthecat on November 29, 2009, 06:35:49 AM

The Mrs wants to go shopping in St Louis today, so I'm going to drop her at her favorite mall and head to Bass Pro over in St Charles (w/ a hand full of gift cards from *last* Christmas), and maybe Cabela's if I have time..

I've got a dehydrator landing on Monday, and a grinder coming later in the week.  Time to stock up on some jerky/sausage supplies!

Yep...  8 miles apart (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=1365+South+5th+Street,+St+Charles,+MO+63301&daddr=5555+St.+Louis+Mills+Blvd,+Hazelwood,+MO+63042+(St.+Louis+Mills+Mall)&hl=en&geocode=FY-WTwIdqy2b-inreiHK-y7fhzGHa1t7CZN9cQ%3BFUTfTwIdxGWc-iH4fWps4NQuJyltX2AYWDDfhzGP6Wcjh4smBA&gl=us&mra=ls&sll=38.78781,-90.453358&sspn=0.097544,0.130978&ie=UTF8&ll=38.767737,-90.451984&spn=0.097571,0.130978&z=13).

The BPS is a real bugger to get into, though.  I wish they'd move it to a new location. Traffic will be seriously backed up this weekend.

Alright, I had to elbow my way through Bass Pro, but I got some LEM goodies. (fibrous casings, jerky mix), a 10 pack of the salami mix that CRG used a couple weeks back (cook in the oven or smoke, no casings needed) and 4 bottles of propane.

I left with 24 cents left on my gift card.   :D

Cabelas was disappointing.  10 minutes to find a parking spot, and everything was picked over. (or full price)
I did get a couple bottles of Tequila Lime seasoning (I use it w/ Bacon Salt on grilled shrimp)

What I couldn't find in either place was just plain old 'cure'. (#1, InstaCure, whatever you call it)
Everything with cure had tons of other spices mixed with it it.   I just want the basic stuff.

I guess I'll have to order some online.

All in all, a good day for the St Louis local economy.   Everyone was well behaved on the roads, and I only saw one accident the entire day...

I bow to ye. I spent the day with the Mrs. at the Outlet Mall in Gonzalas, right across the street from Cabales. Don't get me wrong, my office is just about 2 miles from there and they make a pretty good burger for lunch. It's just that I could SEE it and couldn't touch it, at least not today........  So close but yet so far.  Plus you guys have me on a jerky binge and I need seasoning. Guess I'll hit Targils in Opalousas on Monday. See, that is the problem. All these candy stores and they are all too close!

Love the Tequila lime stuff!

I still spent an hour or so waiting at "her mall" when I was done..

Ever try JD's Bacon Salt?    On a whim (happy accident), Hal and I grilled some shrimp with just Hickory bacon salt and the Cabelas Tequila Lime dusted on - and some garlic oil spray.   It was off the chart.   We ended up burning through that whole container this past summer..

IMO, this definitely isn't one of their better stores..  You have to wander around to find stuff, no rhyme nor reason to where it is placed.  Unless you wanted a monster $500 grinder, then they had pallets of them everywhere!  :D

They did, however, have a Traeger 070 "Classic" for sale there.  (just one, and lots of pellets)  First time I've seen one in person..

Sounds like you had fun squirt.  Sorry about the Traeger.  "Mommy, it followed me home.  Can I keep it?"  ;D ;D

STC,
Your Gander probably has cure #1.  Look in the section where all of the jerky seasonings are.  Look for a hanging packet with the Brand name of "Backwoods" and then look for it to say somewhere on the package "LEM Cure".  It's LEM's cure #1.

Comes packaged in 4 ounce quantities.  4 ounces will cure 100 pounds of meat according to the package.

The Cabelas here in PA had to pick up the slack from 5 other stores that dont do good. This Cabelas is the biggest one out of all the stores. Its still the biggest tourist attraction in PA. Last year they had just a tad over 1 million visitors go thru the store.

Cool.   We're going to take a trip to Philly one of these days, I'll be sure to run out and check that one out..

My mother-in-law's cousin's husband works in the deli at the Cabelas in Tacoma, WA.  It's a real nice store. Much bigger than the St Louis one.

He gets a pretty decent employee discount.

Hmm...   Maybe should I make him a shopping list.    :D

The PA Cabelas also has a huge room just filled with trophy whitetails. It's something to see.  :)
