My wife and I lost a friend this week to breast cancer. She was in my wife's support group where they met 5 years ago and became fast friends through adversity and the toughest of times. My wife wrote this poem for her. I sure hope we find the cure for this thing soon....

For My Friend Elizabeth
How can I say 'she was' when in our hearts 'she is'?
Her freckles lifting in a smile,
Her laughter hanging in the air,
Breath warm on our neck in a hug,
And arms accepting our final weary sadness.
Family was the light that shone for her through the dark of disease,
Happy to be a daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt and good friend.
The keen hope to live for us all,
Helped her rise from each stumble and walk again.
On a bad day a race against time.
On a good day, a second chance.
However warned, we held out hope.
How will we rise from our tears?
How will we move to the music again knowing she has softly stopped dancing?
If we could take those hands on the kitchen clock and race them back to a happy day,
Pull calendars out to a better time, so we would.
Yet this march will move without us if it needs to,
A journey that each must take.
We shall look up from our sorrow and gently fall in step,
Reach for hands outstretched to help,
Feel our grief fully and walk.
The song holds one long and soaring note,
To signal the passing of a friend who shone with honesty and warmth.
For me she still "is" Elizabeth.

Your wife wrote a wonderful tribute to a great friend. ;)
Cancer is a nasty beast... sometimes overwelming... but it "will" be beaten!
Mike
A great post T2. Please thank your wife for me. If we keep working on it, it will be beaten.

I want to express my condolences also. That is a great poem, and hope a cure for all cancers is discovered soon.
Sorry to hear about your loss but I am thankful for your wife's talent with words.
Brad
That's always a sad topic. My mom had cancer.

I'm sorry to here about Elizabeth.
That is a beautiful poem for what sounds like a beautiful friend.
I lost my Grandma to cancer.
What a wonderful way to say Goodbye to a friend
I will simply echo what 10.5 said. I can't think of a better way to honor a friend.

So sorry about this loss of your wife's friend.
What a wonderful, stirring tribute. Through those words, I feel I know both your wife and Elizabeth. I say this with tears in my eyes as I have some good friends bravely battling that hideous disease. Thank your wife for those great words!
