Vertical or Horizonal and why?
I have a vertical and it takes up less room on your bench.
5 lb vertical here for the same reason, also i have 2 corner "C" clamps that hold it down perfectly on a corner of the bench without having to make a permanent mount.
I like the vertical for the same reasons also and think they would be easier to fill.
Have not used a horizontal though.
Well, that's good enough for me.
That's what I was leaning to and just wanted to make sure and I know you three know.
Thanks.
I decided on a LEM SS with metal gears. Comes with plastic tubes but I can change that later.
I found it for 118 with shipping included. Does that sound right?
That's a good price. I have the same one and paid more. ???
OK, gonna order it tonite.
Very good price JUST received mine from LEM and I believe it was 129 ?? or 139 Just remember if you plan on doing snack sticks from the 17-19 mm casings you need to order a 3/8 tube dont think it comes with it, and it didn't tell you on the site what tube to use for what so I emailed them and pointed that out and they said they would change that, and I looked the other day and it seems they did ad it to the stuffer page and the casing page , so customer service is pretty good at LEM also they knocked the shipping off the 3/8 tube when I ordered it, NICE
LTS
Thanks for the info LTS.
Am ordering mine from Meatprocessors.com (I think)
www.meatprocessingproducts.com
That vertical one looks like it makes more sense.
They have a $10 discount code and shipping was 12.00
Just used my 5# lem for the first time this weekend, got it from meat processing and could not be happier! Looks like it will hold up for a long time. I also agree, need to get a 3/8 tube for smaller casings. Good luck i'm sure you will be satisfied!

Boy you dont mess around, when you want something you get it.
Wife says they make a medicine for my kind of sickness.
I'm not going to the Doctor. ;D
I have a vertical and a horizontal. I don't like the horizontal. It's geared way to high and when using smaller tube it all you can do to turn the handle. The vertical is the way to go.

Yeah we're all sick.
Is this the one you ordered? http://www.meatprocessingproducts.com/lem606.html
good choice. the worst thing anyone could do when getting a stuffer is getting one with no metal gears.
I have one just like it 5 lb. and a 20lb. electric.
Actually ordered this one:
http://www.meatprocessingproducts.com/lem838.html
I think it's the same stuffer but your getting all the goodies with that one. Still a real good choice.
When you get time make homemade weiners, you'll never buy store bought again.

I called to verify that it was the same and they said yes.
Sausage stuffin (at retail) runs about $1 a lb.
Commerical spices (kits) runs about the same $1 a lb.
They gave you enough for 60lbs, plus the book.
I think it was a real good deal. Plus $10 off with the discount code.
shipping was 10.95, plus I have ordered from them twice and got my stuff quick on
the economy shipping.
Thats a good price on the stuffer combo you got CRG
Now what to make first with all those sausage kits and all that three legged deer meat you got?
What about a meat mixer. LEM has a 17lb that is reasonable.
The nice thing that I have going is that I don't have to make a bunch in one day.
I processed my venison grind in 3lb pkg and if I go 60/40 I would make 5 to 10lbs at a time.
And if I go 75/25 then it would be 4 to 8lbs at a time.
Based on that, I think I can hand mix that much and not need to take a beverage break.
I kick myself in the butt everytime I use my 5 LB LEM stuffer...........should have bought the 10LB so I could buy the electric motor with foot pedal.
Its a great stuffer but and extra set of hands come in "Handy" when stuffing.
Lumpy
Then again, one seeming advantage to a horizontal stuffer ("seeming" because I don't have one, I have an old SMI 5 lb vertical stuffer) is that with the horizontal stuffer you don't end up with 1/2 - 1 lb of meat in the bottom that you just can't push through. A good quality gear driven horizontal stuffer would seem to let you get more of your meat into the casing! I would like to give something like this
(http://www.everythingkitchens.com/images/products/detail/lem_5lb_horizontal_sausage_stuffer_852_detail.gif)
a try, but not enough to part with $179...
What I am really amazed does seem to be available though is a large hand stuffing tube with interchangeable horns and a decent ram that would let me deal with the last of the meat in the vertical stuffer. Wherever I ask about this, the sales folks always say "Yeah, that's a great idea, have never seen one." Soooo...any entrepreneurs out there? ;D
Are you guys taking your stuffer to its full potential? I have the LEM 5lb and i have more in the tube leftover than i do in the container.
Mine is the same.
There's not enough meat left in the stuffer to make a meatball.
The tube.............thats different.
Lumpy
anderson, think I saw a post the other day where someone is using a piece of styrofoam that will push out the last bit
http://www.meatprocessingproducts.com/lem852.html
CRG,
i have a meat mixer from northern tool (surprise) they are real close to work.
it is a 17lb unit, it mixes well and is easy to break down and clean. doesn't take up too much space.
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200004374_200004374
Thanks UIS, this is the one I was looking at and again I can get $10 off
http://www.meatprocessingproducts.com/lem654.html
Different stuffers must be a bit different, I don't what the others have, but the ONLY way to get a fair quantity of meat out of the bottom of the OLD (15 years old) SMI stuffer would be to put some kind of additional pusher disk under the plastic piston. The screw reaches the bottom of its travel and simply no she go. I will see if my buddy can make me a nice hardwood disk the same diameter as the piston, he has a pretty good wood shop and more importantly is not a spastic like me (figuratively, not literally, no offense to any real spastics here!).
I still like the idea of a good little hand stuffer though.

I bought a stuffer recently... It is an elbow shaped type stuffer... I will not use it anymore... It let a lot of my sausage escape in the stuffer around the press plate... Not mention the amount that would hang up in front of the tube...
I use a 5 lb. from northern tool with plastic gears, no problems and with whats leftover in stuffer and tube makes a perfect patty for next mornings breakfast.
I have had a Sausage Maker Inc. 5 lb vertical stuffer for years and years and love it. But generally needing two of everything (one for Fall City, near Seattle, and one for Birch Bay, a couple of miles south of the Canadian border), in a weak moment I foolishly bought one of these a few years ago.
First use of it was yesterday (not so much time for sausage at Birch Bay as I thought I would have, and until this weekend, the only smoker here was the Little Chief).
It was an unmitigated disaster. I got my Grandpa Jumbo Polish stuffed (and it turned out the best ever), but significant quantities of meat ooze up around the wrong side of the plunger, and it takes more force than ought to be necessary to push the lever down - definitely not for the feeble. Does ANYBODY use these suckers successfully? Can anybody explain how they are supposed to work?
Pat
If you have a brother in law (etc.) you don't like ............ give it to him. You will never miss the thing!!!! Had one and hated it. It's ok .... if you have a 300# buddy to push the handle down while you stuff the casing. IMHO
Anderson, that one is exactly like mine... I hate it... I may just give it to my Mother-In-Law... I would hate to insult my Brother-In-Law... LOL...
I have one of those also, worst investment I made in food equipment. I had the same problem with the food oozing around the plunger and the force issue. It does help if you mount it permanently, but I actually like my hand grinder for stuffing better. I now have an automatic grinder stuffer that makes life soooooo much easier!
I am glad I read this thread. I was about to buy one of those stuffers. However, I won't know. I'll save for a vertical one now.
York - you can buy mine CHEAP!

I agree with everyone that the vertical is the way to go! However I stuffed hundreds of pounds of sausage with the old style. I have had all the problems described! Some one told me to wrap the plunger head with aluminum foil, that eliminated alot, not all, of the leakage of meat. I have a 5# grizzly that works great and would not go back to the other unless I strip my plastic gears in the middle of a batch! (Some of us just do not learn)
Tim
When i worked at Cabelas those horn stuffers just sat around. Not many sold.......Garbage IMHO
I went with CRG and ordered the 5 pound LEM. I didn't get the kit. I already have the book and some seasonings.
I just can't take the KA stuffer anymore!
Mine came in today!
Sure is pretty!
CRG, You doing like me now? Buyin' stuff and just looking at it?
He doesn't want to get it dirty ;D

Romo isn't thinking just yet. His head is still rattling! ;D
Ah the Super Bowl...are you taking your sausage stuffer to the Super Bowl?
Hal,
I've got no smack talk for the MN vs NO game on Sunday. I felt pretty confident going into the AZ game but this one makes me real nervous. Point spread yesterday was NO and 3.5 I guess playing in the Dome is worth 3.5 so that makes it an even money game in my book. I think this game is truly a coin toss on who will win.
But you know who I'll be pulling for. ;)
KyGeauxSaintsNola
I'm confident but nervous. Thankful we're playing in a dome, just wish it was a bit more North. Crowd noise is going to be huge.
Making it to the Super Bowl will be nice, not having to listen to that "Who Dat" anymore would make it even sweeter. But then again our QB was singing Pants on The Ground so I'm not saying much.
Good luck!
TTNuge,
This one will be fun to watch no matter what. Favre vs Brees, what a matchup.
Good luck to the Vikings and yes you're right. The noise will be deafening.

I got a 15# vertical stuffer from gander mnt - it looks to be a rebranded LEM stuffer. I found out the hard way that the small tube it came with will not take 19mm casings, but it would fit 22mm if I threaded them on a few feet at a time. I have looked for a smaller tube but have not had any luck. Does anyone know where I can get a smaller tube that will fit this stuffer?

Lumpy,
You won't believe where that one came from. I was cleaning some spent M1 cases out of the shell polisher and out it popped. I told Scott it must be defective so we will give it away. Scott looks it over real good and said "I don't see any defects." ;D

I think NePaS had some stuffer tubes for sale on the site here. I'm not sure if they're that size though.
