Well finally got my bradley working correctly, got a different heating element and added a second one.
It was -10 the other day when i tried out my bradley with both elements, got the thing up to 250 in under 10 minutes, put in 10lbs of pork and the thing recovered to 225 in about 10-20 minutes, simply amazing at how much this extra element helps!
Installed the extra element on a switch so now i am all set, thanks to the people at bradley for helping me get my smoker going, then with a little adjustments i got it working even better!
Congrats
I had o build a hotel for mine !
I hve 2 very large salamis smking in a snow storm right now
I will have to add a second element, the reviews are just too good
I did it in my D6R and loving it!
congrats on getting smoker up and running.
You hooked your second element to an on/off switch?
How do you controll the amount of heat you want it to make or
are you just using it for warm up and recovery?
Sure would like some more info on that.
No switch here.
See no reason for it.
PID turns them on and off.....if I want 220*, I get 220*.
I just get there faster!
;D
I just finished my 2nd element conversion and did not go for the switch.
Did not think that I needed it. Just like MPTubbs says "PID turns them on and off.....if I want 220*, I get 220*.
Lump
I am intrigued by the switch also. It kind of makes sense.
during the warmer weather when you do not need the heat boost,
or you just don't want to burn the extra energy (how ever little it may be)
you could turn it off saving one Element in case the other fails.
Thus reducing any down time.

I think the energy cost would be the same.
Elements are on 1/2 the time the single element is on......I see no savings.
Just curious, how much did the extra element cost to get and install? Am thinking of making a bigger box and was wondering if this style of element is the way to go. I have heard of people just using two or three electric hotplates in place of an element in homemade boxes and just wanted to see the cost of each.
The element is about $17
the ceramic holders are around $16
The shield is around $8
Yard & Pool has a list of replacement parts.
I will find you a link to Y&P

Do you have a direct link for the second element or can I just call them. I can't find it on their web page.
Thanks phaz

Built a smoker jacket for the smoker, I used 2" plastispan hd for insulation. It covers a little over half of the smoker and it is more than enough for canadian climates. I also have it in my shed to keep the cold winds from getting to it.I used it on superbowl sunday and smoked 2 chickens and 4 racks of ribs with no problem.
Thanks going to order parts tomorrow.
