Well, its actually been ice fishing time for a few months but i was thinking about trying to smoke some northern pike. Anyone ever tried it? My uncle used to own a fly in fishing camp up in the way WAY north of Saskatchewan and he used to smoke the northern pike we caught. I fillet them boneless and usually just fry them but i started thinking back to when he smoked them. They aren't an oily fish so i am thinking they might dry out? Anyone have any recipe or smoke advise? If i remember right...which was from a long time ago, he just sprinkled lawry's seasoning salt on them and in the fridge for 12 hours then into the smoker. But i could be wrong hahaha.
Hey have you heard of a small lake up north called "Peter Pond"? A guy I knew use to talk about how he was going to buy some land on the lake when he retired. He said it had a beautiful long white sand beach and was fly-in only. He unfortunately died before he retired. What a shame how many good folks have to work till death just to retire.
I have never fished it. I am north of this lake and most of our fishing happens even more north of where I am located. Very seldom do we go south to fish. Its just that there are hundreds of lakes to choose from if i go north and only a handfull if you go south. The closest lake to me holds Northerns, walley, perch, white fish, and burbot. And if you want anything different, its just an hour away. The only reason to go south is for the world record(quite litterally) rainbow trout we have. But you know, there are sooooo many lakes like what you describe around here. I like to go to Anglin lake which is allot like what you describe. Its not a party lake. Its more like a relax if you come here type of lake.

Now that sounds like my kind of lake.

But I think the next time i go out, I am gonna keep one or two northers and fillet them boneless and try smoking them. I figure on a good day and a day being 6 hours long haha, you can hit about 8 or 10 6lb plus northers and then switch to jumbo perch. So maybe take one home to see how she tastes this next time around ;)
Wow, those things are huge. That'd be a meal for a month.
You'll have to lay your Bradley over on it's side to get one to fit!

Actually Peter pond lake is a rather large lake (40 miles long,13 miles wide.) up in the northwest area right next to Churchhill lake and just below Frobisher lake 180 miles north of Cold Lake. Might be worth checking out. You can find it with google maps.
I may be thinking of a different lake then haha...Might have to google it and see what i am talking about.
Hey Northernsmoke you are talking about my old stomping grounds about 50 yrs. ago. Gotta love northern Sask. As for smoking pike I have done lots. I brine it in 1/2 cup salt[kosher] 1/2 cup brown sugar and whatever spices you like in 1 gallon of water. You can leave them brining up to 12 hrs. unless they are really thin. I then hot smoke at about 175f and just keep tasting until its done to your way. Thks Piker
Thanks, I think i am going out this week sinces its gonna be right around the melting point. If i can hook some nice northers, one is going in the smoker. Even the jumbo perch we pull out are just too small to smoke haha.
