Title: Soy protein question
Post by: lumpy on February 18, 2010, 02:03:35 PM
Hey guys
I have few questions:
The last 2 years that I have been making pork sticks, I have used soy protein isolate. I ordered this from JB's a long time ago. Now I am almost out and need to order some more.
When I spoke to Charlene at JB's she told me that isolate is sold only in 20 kilo bags. We haggled a bit and she agreed to sell me 5 kilos instead of the 20 kilo bag. I told her that she did the same for me last time I ordered, so she gave in.

She did question the fact that I was using soy protein isolate in my pork sticks. While I was on the phone with her I got out Rytek's book, whom I got the stick recipe from and looked up the ingredients. Low and behold the recipe stated soy protein concentrate. So now for 2 couple of years I have been using isolate instead of concentrate, also  concentrate is about 20% the cost of isolate.

I understand the difference that isolate is a tan power and concentrate looks like onion flakes. JB's also stated that concentrate is like TVP (textured vegetable protein). They told me that I could also use dried milk power.

The sticks that I have been making over the years with isolate look and taste great.

If anyone could tell me that I have been right or wrong on this..........please enlighten me.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Thanks OU
From what I read about the two, I should be eating my snack sticks after a workout instead of having a protein shake :D

Isolate is the purest form, ergo the cost.

Lumpy

I use to be in power lifting when I was younger and that isolate question rang a bell and turned on a light bulb in my head.
