Title: Fly Fishing
Post by: RossP on March 05, 2010, 12:44:31 PM
Ok so I am also an avid fly fisher. The wife also enjoys fly fishing. Since I have two hobbies that go so well together fly fishing and smokin, I thought why not start a Fly thread. I also have been tying my own flies for a few years. We have gone fishing in Alaska, Montana, Mexico and of course here in Canada, British Columbia and Alberta. If there is enough interest I would like to host a fly swap of some kind with the members of the board who also tie flies. So lets hear who also like to tie and would like to participate. It would be nice to see everyone's favorite goto fly.

Cheers
Ross

I have to ask, do you fish for bass or bluegill?  Down here in Alabama we don't have the trout and stream fish like y'all do up in the great white north.

I do fish for Bass and Crappie up here. One of my flies for Cutthroat works great for Blue Gill. I did a fly swap about two years ago and a fellow that fishes for blue gill loved my tied down minnow pattern for blue gill.

Did I hear my name being called?  I'm in.  Just got some feathers form a big dead bird that tie up the super-secret gray midge that does so well in late summer here.  Times are about ripe for a shad kill - gotta time up some white streamer types.  But all for naught if they don't limit the water releases.  Will have no choice but to go after the put-n-take warm water trout stockers just to feel the tug drug.  Or then again maybe some smallies!  Have fished most of our surrounding states except VA and WVA, Alaska (but not freshwater either time darn it) and also Montana (love that miles long riffle - the Madison), New Mexico, and Wyoming and the salt in Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.  Hope to do the Snake in Idaho this year - or some Key West salt, but right now I'd settle for the muddy bar ditch out front of the house.  There are some guys having some fun with River Muskie when they can.  Lost all my big gear to some sticky finger, hammer toting product of society and the village mindset last year, and just getting the big stuff built back up.   Shoulder not what it used to be and am eying a pro deal on a Helios 10 wt.

Up here I am lucky, I get to fish every week of the year. I try a get out every Monday.
So far this year I have only missed one Monday. I usually go oout for Cut Throat or Steelhead
This time of year. On Monday I plan on going for Steelhead.
My favorite steams are within 10 minutes of the house. My favorite lake
to take my float tube to for Bass, Crappie and Trout is 30 minutes.
