Post by: ajholt7 on March 14, 2010, 05:49:23 PM
I am picking up my first smoker tomorrow!  I am pretty excited.  Any suggestions as to a first smoke flavor?

W E L C O M E  to the Forum ajholt7!

It really depends on taste.

I would suggest Apple, it is a nice mild wood.

If you like it stonger, try Hickory.

Welcome ajholt7.

You can't go wrong with hickory.

Welcome to the forum ajholt7. You are going to love this place. Don't be afraid to ask any questions at all. We live for this. Just keep that vent open(1/4 to 1/2 most of the time and wide open for all poultry. Here is a quick wood flavour chart to get you started and there is a more indepth wood guide on the recipe site. www.susanminor.org/forums/index.php

Pecan-mild version of Oak

Hi ajholt7;

Welcome to the forum.

As far as wood flavor, it is also a good idea to consider what you will be smoking when you select a wood.

Here is a direct link to the guide Quarlow is referring to:

Hi aj and welcome to the forum.

I'm sure we all have our favorites.  I tend to go with hickory for pork, apple for chicken, maple for bacon (hickory coming soon), mesquite for brisket and oak for roast beef.  I haven't done any salmon yet but understand that alder is kind of traditional.

Keep some notes of what you smoke.  They can come in handy many months down the road.
