Title: Mountains and Bears...
Post by: hal4uk on April 19, 2010, 09:25:38 PM
Mavis is sick today...
She never was before - at least not for the last 104 years, but she's not doing so well now.
I suppose that sounds as if it has little to to with mountains or bears or old Cherokee indians.
Maybe not.

Anyway... Pennies make dollars, and y'all never expect me to make any dang sense...
Wouldn't wanna disappoint.

I reckon I ain't worth a nickel.  But, I'm worth a penny.  She told me so.
Awrighten.

Thanks, ALL y'all...

Sorry I even posted this, but I did.  Oh well.
Didn't mean to bring anyone down.

She had a rough day yesterday, but comfortable right now (thanks to Oxygen and Morphine).
Just a matter of time now, but she's a real tough bird.

P.F. and Mavis took us to the Great Smokey Mountains a few times when we were kids.
Seemed kinda magical at the time, and there wasn't any easy way to get there.
All you old pre-Interstate-Highway folks probably know what I mean...
Still have the memories.
Mavis doesn't.
But, I do.
Awrighten.

Sorry to hear about your grandmother. I hope it nothing serious. I just can't imagine of all the history she has experienced; from horse and buggy to outer space exploration.

Raise your glasses boys (and girls)...   Mavis passed away peacefully a couple hours ago.

Here she is when she was a spry 100.

Well, I got the grass cut.  I reckon it'll look presentable till we get back.
Got the bus all cleaned up.  Ain't fittin' to go funerals in a dirty vehicle.

We ordered a real nice spread of pink roses to cover the box.
Mavis liked pretty pink things.

Ordered some more flowers for two other old women...
(When it rains, it pours).
One was my neighbor growing up, and one was my grade-school principal...
Seems it didn't matter what I tore up or set on fire, she loved me anyhow.
Treated me like I was her own.
Go figure.

Thanks y'all for all the well wishes and prayers.
Sorry I posted this decipherable misery...
I promise, I'll go back to posting my regular nonsense when I get back.
Awrighten.

Thanks, all y'all...

It was a nice service.  A couple of young fellas from P.F. and Mavis's church (that they founded) came and played a trumpet duet at the graveside, and both pastors came and spoke a few words.

The closest relatives were all grandchildren, and I made all the older folks sit down in the chairs where we were supposed to.
Just didn't seem right sitting down when we didn't need to.

Spent some time by myself just driving around town.  The "Norman Rockwell" images of where I grew up (near my old home) have been replaced with unkept lawns, 2nd hand shops, and check cashing enterprises.  On the bright side, it's still a wonderful town, and lots of nice "new" things are happening.  I reckon it's true that "you can't go home".  Everything changes.

The old Lowertown district has really been revitalized, and become quite the tourist attraction (due, in no small part, to KyNola -- good job, buddy!).

Traffic was very heavy because it was "Quilter's Week" - Thousands of folks come from all over the world to Paducah, KY for the Quilt festival.

Kinda fittin', I reckon...  I have two quilts that Mavis stitched by hand for me.
Anyhow, Mavis was a pistol.
Awrighten.
