Title: Chat room and VoIP
Post by: Oldman on June 03, 2010, 07:24:47 PM
I've made it a point these past two weeks to be in the chat room. There are enough members that use it so it will be upgraded. Next on my main server there is an old VoIP server. Used it to voice chat in games years ago. If enough members want we and set it back up and send out the client software.  The member would need a good sound card and head set with a mic.

At the moment Trey is really hammered, but I think that by Monday our conversion tables will be back on the site. After that I will upgrade the chat room.  The VoIP will be the last addon if the members want one.

I tried to keep up with the count for you and it was 21 or 22 people that passed thru the chat room Tuesday.

I think we all had a good time.

I am not familar with VoIP so I won't comment on that.

Thanks Again Raye!

Sorry for not knowing the ropes, but this is twice I've seen a reference to a chat room while clicking on "Show unread post since last visit". Is this chat room a link I just haven't run across yet? I enjoy the site and thanks!

You need to go to Old's Recipe site.  There is a link there for the chat room.

Gizmo, Thanks and I'll do that. One more question. How do you get my initial post (question) to appear within the blue block above your reply? I have to ask to learn!

Raye, please elaborate a bit.  I have two VoIP phone lines.  No big deal.

Way back when I actually had a job, one could call into a service for teleconferencing.  Of course, the service cost money.

So, I'm not actually sure what you're describing here.

Again, if you need a hand with anything, let me know.

Arnie all it is is if you have a headset mic you can hook it to your comp and then you can talk over the internet instead of typing out messages like we do in the chatroom. So we would be talking instead of typing.

That is how those voip phones work. They take the cell signal and direct it into the internet and you can talk to anywhere in the world routed thought the net.

The conversion tools are back.  There are a couple of errors/variables that need to be addressed, but nothing that prevents the tools themselves from working.

To be honest I've seen more than one chat room die off after changing from text to voice.  Some people don't feel comfortable talking, you have to pay closer attention because you can't just scroll back if you miss something, and it's harder to juggle family and chat if you need to be wearing headphones.

Personally I would rather it stay the way it is.

You can do VOIP chats using SKYPE for free with all US members.  A group of us active traders did this (probably some still do) every day while the markets were open.  It works well for a small group - say 5 max.  Once you get beyond that, without moderation, it starts becoming mayhem.  Second, there was no way to keep a record of what was exchanged.  I doubt those would be significant issues here, but they were the issues with that group.

Yes and no. We could set up several rooms where members could go into to talk to each other. An open like a conference room or smaller rooms.

As what I currently have is an Old (2.1 .2.2) Ventrilo. Trey (CyberDude) is not sure the client for it is compatible when the today's newer operation systems. He and I talked about it last night and next week he will be looking at other types of voice servers / clients.

As far as cost goes there is none to the members of the recipe site who are also member of good standing here on the Bradley forums. What a member will need is a head set with a mic and a full duplex sound card. (Most cards / systems today are full duplex.)

Now once installed a member can use the VoIP server anytime.  For example let's say you have a friend in China. You set up a time to talk with that friend. It will not cost you one silly cotton-pickin' dime. However, your friend (again) will have to be a member of the recipe site and a active member of the Bradley forums. I'm not interested in financing world wide voice chat for non-members. VoIP takes bandwidth. Bandwidth cost money.

If it is abused I will limit it useage to only Tuesday nights.

The down side to VoIP in a chatroom is you will have members using it but not typing in the chat box and as such some members who do not have VoIP will be left out of the conversation.

The upside is it adds a whole new dimension to getting to know other members. It would help understand a person's online persona that can be misunderstood otherwise.

Also I would need moderator's / Admin to over see it.
