I know, I know..........cole slaw is the traditional side dish for pulled pork but my family was getting kind of sick of it, so they asked me to come up with something new as a side dish. Here's a decent recipe that I've been working with that has come out pretty decent.
1 lb hamburger browned and drained
1/2 lb bacon, cut in small pieces
1 onion, chopped
4 cans beans (you can mix and match any 4 cans that you want; I like it best when one of the cans is a baked bean)
3/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup barbecue sauce
1 cup dark brown sugar
2 T mustard
1 t vinegar
1 jalapeno, chopped (you can add more depending on your audience.)
salt & pepper to taste
You can either mix this all up and bake at 350 for 1-1.5 hours or just mix it all up in the slow cooker. If doing in a slow cooker, I will cook on high for minimum of 3 hours to ensure bacon is cooked through or on low for 5-6 hours. If you really like a vinegary taste, bump up the vinegar to 4 t. Additionally, this is a great recipe to utilize leftover pulled pork in place of or in conjunction with the hamburger. Sometimes, when I'm feeling saucy, I will throw some browned ground pork and turkey in there as well. It's really difficult to mess this up and is always a side I never have to worry about not being eaten. I like adding 2-3 jalapenos in it for a good bite. This is also a decent recipe to throw in to the smoker if you've got other things going and have the room. I take it out after a couple hours and then throw in the slow cooker. If I do smoke it first, I wait to throw the bacon in after pulling from the smoker.
Well well well, the prodigal son returns bringing a good looking recipe with him!
Good to hear from you SD!
The Duck IS BACK!!! Looks like a good recipe Marc
I figured I'd better bring something good with me on my return. I'm just happier than heck that I can return to being a productive member of society and the smoking world :-)
Forgot to mention that you'll probably want to double this if you've got 4 or more adults eating. My wife and I pretty much devour most of this ourselves and then do one heck of a rendition of dueling banjos later that same evening :P
Hey SD
Great lookin' recipe! Even greater to here from ya too! ;)
I sure hope things have turned around for you.
Mike
Hi SD;
Welcome back.
Looks like a good recipe. I'm looking for a baked bean dish. I'll give yours a try.
I think you'll like this....I really like something with a vinegary taste so I kick it up a notch but this is a recipe that is very easy to play around with. I will also throw garlic in here but you have to throw a lot in to get a sense of it with so many different things going on with this. It has a nice barbecue taste to it and really complements pulled pork well.
The first thing I'm making with my first paycheck is the Syracuse Salted Potatoes, Habs.......been craving those for a long time now :-)
Sounds like a good recipe SD. The Syracuse Salted Potatoes are really good. I told my wife about the recipe for them. She said she wouldn't eat them with all that salt. She is now a believer.
Also, congrats on the job. :D
