Good evening, all!
A friend and coworker of Scott's gave him four tomatillo plants a few weeks ago, which he planted.
We are at a loss, however, as we have never even tried tomatillos, let alone know what to do with them.
I have heard of them being added to soups, sauces, etc. I have heard of salsa being made with them.
So, do any of you have any recipes for tomatillos that you could share with us?
Thanks!
Mrs S
P.S. Is a tomatillo a fruit or a vegetable? ???
Mrs S.
I make this about every other week or so.
It keeps pretty good if you don't eat it all first.

I make a very simple salsa verde with tomatillos: chopped tomatillos, finely diced white onion, cilantro, salt, pepper and lime juice--it is so good and tastes fresh, fresh, fresh.
T2
I like this one for Guisado Verde.
This I make in a crock pot, not authentic technique, but tasty and carefree.
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 pounds boneless pork shoulder
1 large onion, coarsely chopped
3 cloves garlic, chopped - I usually use more
2 (12 ounce) cans tomatillos, drained and chopped
2 (7 ounce) cans diced green chile peppers
2 fresh jalapeno peppers, sliced
1/2 cup fresh chopped cilantro
1 teaspoon dried oregano
Dash of Cumino
salt and pepper to taste
1 quart water -or chicken broth
1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
1/4 cup sour cream
Sprigs fresh cilantro, for garnish
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat, and brown the pork on all sides. Reserving the juices in the skillet, transfer the pork to a slow cooker.
In the skillet with the pork juices over medium heat, saute the onion and garlic about 1 minute. Transfer to the slow cooker, along with skillet juices.
Mix the tomatillos, green chile peppers, jalapeno peppers, and cilantro into the slow cooker. Season with oregano, cumino, salt, and pepper. Pour in 1 quart water or broth, or enough to cover all ingredients. Cover, and cook on High for 6 to 7 hours.
Shred the cooked pork with a fork. Spoon the slow cooker mixture into bowls, and top with Monterey Jack cheese, sour cream, and fresh cilantro sprigs to serve.
Looks like a great recipe Caney :)
Mrs., I planted tomatillos in my garden for the first time this year and I will be experimenting with them, too.
Carolyn
Caney, I have seen that recipe before or something close to it.
Sounds interesting.
Hey Mrs!!!!! I use tomatillos in salsa verde just like T2. Caney's sounds pretty good as well.....might have to give that a try.
BTW .... It is a fruit. ;D
I meant to say that ;D ;D
Tomatillo's are great! Caney's slow cooked pork looks like a hit to me.
Tomatillos are the basis for a lot of salsa verdes (green salsas). When confronted with new ingredients or just looking for something different to do with the same old stuff, do a simple search at www.foodnetwork.com using just that ingredient and search Recipes. For example, using tomatillo you get this:

Thank you, everyone! Great ideas! I will have to experiment with salsas, and Caney, that pork recipe looks like da bomb!!!
Nice to hear from you, SD! Caribou, I love the 3-D glasses on the pooch!
CRG, thanks for clarifying that whole fruit/vegetable thing for me!!!!!
T2, I am going to start with that salsa recipe of yours!
Mrs
P.S. I will keep you posted on my efforts, if that don't suck too bad!!!!
Caney, that one is a beauty! I usually have way too much vacsealed pork in the freezer. Now I gotta break it out! Thanks for the idea!
Caney,
That looks so good, thanks for posting it.
Now I don't know if I can wait for my plants to produce them fast enough! :D
Mrs,
Are yours ready to pick? My plants are setting a lot of fruit but none ready yet. :)
