Title: NYC Ballpark food
Post by: squirtthecat on July 28, 2010, 10:30:36 PM
Spent about 6 hours (seriously) out a CITI field tonight watching the Cards ultimately whoop up on the Mets in the 13th inning...   (we left at the top of the 13th and listened to the rest of the game on the train out of Queens)

Flashback to dinner time when we arrived.

Huge lines at the Shake Shack.

I had a Shackburger, fries and their own brew of beer.   Pretty good.   Nothing worth photographing as it was just a burger and fries in a box.

Next door was 'Blue Smoke'.   A local BBQ chain.

No lines to speak of...   $10 for a pulled pork sammy, and they had a 'Barbecued Beef Bologna Sandwich' on the menu.     Oh, and 12 bucks for a bit of ribs.

We call these 'elephant ears' or 'funnel cakes' back home.

Decent seats.     Except for that glass thingie.

This was my highlight of the evening...   Saw it at one stand, and had to take stairs/elevators back down to have one.  "Pastrami Dog".    It is a kosher beef dog, with hot sliced (right off of the flattop) pastrami on top.

Dressed with a bit of kraut, mustard and 'hot red onion relish'.

Does that sign say $9.50 for Bologna?

That's how I read it...

I guess after enough $7.25 (or $7.75 for the 'fancy' stuff) beers, a $10 bologna sammy might sound attractive after a while.

Let's see what I run across tomorrow.   Today was exhausting and the food consisted of European-style (danishes, breads, bagels, cold cuts, fruit, hard boiled eggs and some cereal) breakfast at the hotel, and ballpark food for dinner.

Just read a bunch about their restaurant the other day.  Apparently Mike Mills (http://www.17thstreetbarbecue.com/AboutMike.htm) (the guy who wrote "Peace, Love, And Barbeque") is a partner and the NYC principals went to Murphysboro, IL, to learn how to make Q from him.  Supposed to be pretty good (the New York prices notwithstanding).

I'm amazed at the prices in the stadium. Except for the ribs, those prices are just a little higher then the prices at most sporting events, fairs and festivals in upstate.

Real nice seats. I'm surprise you had money left over for food. :)

$10 for a pulled pork sandwich makes Hal's kurobota look cheap ;D

I think those prices are in line with Fenway (I haven't been for a few years).  I paid $12 or $13 for a beer at the Jimmy Buffett concert  but have no idea how much the food was because we had pulled chicken sandwiches in the parking lot.

Keep the food pics coming.... I'll be eating down there in the fall.

The prices are definitely in line...
St Louis ballpark fare is maybe a dollar cheaper.   Beer prices are the same. ($7 and up)

My initial burger, fries and beer was $19.25.

I'm only a couple hours from Mike Mill's place in Southern IL.  We do need to make a trek down there and check it out sometime.    The actual Blue Smoke restaurant is about a block or 2 from where we are staying.

Yeah, it was an expensive evening..   :D

One thing I did see and didn't get...    A lobster roll.   17 bucks!

MrsSTC got one of these.  "Box Frites".   Simple menu - all they sell are french fries with 6 or 7 different kinds of dipping sauces.   She got the Bacon Aïoli.    Oh my was it good..    :o    Seasoned french fries dipped in bacon/mayo/whatever-a-Aioli-is blend..

This is a 'regular' order:

What was the price of your seats? At least you got a free nose bleed.

Was going to take wife to Yankee Stadium until I saw the bill for seats for 2 tickets $680.00
Ouch!

The NY connection to Blue Smoke also developed Shake Shack and some 6 other restaurants all in NYC.  The guy has a very interesting story.  The title of his book is "Setting the Table".

I walked by the Blue Smoke restaurant a few minutes ago...   Looked interesting.   They've got a selection of BBQ sauces...  Might grab a bottle or 2 to play with.

Hal - the same as everything.  6-7 bucks.

I'd go for that. Told the wife just be happy you get all the games on DirecTV.
