Title: The Jack
Post by: Caneyscud on September 23, 2010, 06:41:18 AM
I can't believe its been almost a year since I posted pictures of the 09 Jack.  But in one month "The Jack" BBQ contest will be held in the bucolic hills of Middle Tennessee at the home of Tennessee Sippin' Whiskey.  Boy, you're in rarified air during that weekend - mixture of smoke, cooking meat, and aging whiskey - and not all that far from fly fishing on the Elk or even the Duck Rivers.  I for one can't wait.  Anybody else thinking about attending.

That will be Oct. 25 and it is a great time for ones senses (sight, sound, smell and taste)! Sorry to say I can't make it this year.  But I will partake in a sip and a raised glass out of respect for the fine man!

If you are there on the 25th, you'll be part of the clean up crew.   It starts Friday 10/22 and Judging is Sat 10/23.

Here's a link to the past year's posters for the event.  Some are pretty cool!

Man I wish I could be there. I am going to plan on next year. I think I have SWMBO just about talked into going. After she attended the meet and greet at our local BBQ competition and she met some of the competitors going to the Jack she seemed to be a little jazzed about going. After all I have over a year to work  on her. ;) Have fun Caney.

I only wish!!  You probably know this already, but some may not.  The Jack is one of, if not the hardest contest to participate in – you don't "Enter"  The Jack.  Lynchburg is not a big town – only about 6,000 and I bet most of them live out in rural areas.  The city park where they have it is not very big, so the number of teams are limited.  The Jack is an invitational contest where selected teams are drawn from a pool of qualified competitors. In order to qualify for the drawing, teams must win a Grand Championship from a qualifying contest (50 or more teams, or a contest of 25 or more teams with a "State Championship" designation).  They draw one contest winner from each state. If a state does not have a representative team, they will draw again from a list of teams from that state to make sure that every state has at least one team in the event. Teams also  gain entry into The Jack by winning 7 or more qualifying contests during the year or by winning one of four really big contests (American Royal Open, previous year's Jack, Memphis In May, or the Houston Livestock and Rodeo BBQ). They also invite a number of international teams to the competition as well.   So teams must not only be good enough to win a qualifying event, they must also be lucky enough to have their "team's bung" drawn and get invited.   They write a team's name on a whiskey barrel bung for the drawing.  Of course in a state like Maine, there is probably only one qualifying contest and the winner of that contest is pretty much a shoe-in to qualify.  However for a state as Texas or Missouri, you have to be lucky to be drawn.

It is not far from me so I may plan on going. If anyone else is going? If so we need to arrange to meet at some point.
