Question is if i start my bradley somker in the morning at a pre set temp. and wish it to stay at a temp of 180. Then the sun comes out if the ambient temp rises during the day will the bradley keep the temp at the said temp of 180.?
yes, the Auber doesn't care what the sun and moon are doing.
Thanks that is the answer i was hoping for, i smoked some salmon today and while i was at work my OBS tempature rose up 75 deg. from the starting temp of 180 i came home it was 255 deg.
Your heating element was likely completely off with the sun heating it. The last time I used the bradley once the sun hit the smoker, after about an hour the light on the tower went out. I thought it had packed it in but when I opened the door to check things out it came back on again. Then after 20 minutes it went off again. Of course it doesn't get sun where it is till 12:30 or 1:00 so it was pretty warm outside already.
is there a problem with the light or the temp probe?
No just the sun was heating it beyond the set temp so it shut down.
but if it shuts down then hod did the temp get to 255?
There can be other variables that need to be considered. If you have the generator on and it is producing heat, the PID does not control that. Though the PID will shut the heating element off, the generator with the sun can heat your cabinet higher then 180°F. So you may want to consider a Auber PID model that will turn off your generator after a certain amount of time.
I dont have the PID yet

I dont have the PID yet
That would probably explain why it was 225º. By the Title of the thread "Auber PID" everyone made the assumption that you had a PID. Otherwise I know I would have suggested NOT doing the Salmon smoke while away and unable to watch and adjust the temps. Sorry for the confusion
Sorry for the confusion, i was wondering if the Auber would of corrected the temp problem. the salmon was smoked by that time sorry for the confusion. but the good news is it convinced the wife why i need one.
My reply didn't assume you had a PID. I spoke about the limitations of a PID and if you are thinking about getting one then choose a model that will turn off the generator. The PID will not solve your problem unless you turn off the generator or keep your cabinet out of the sun.
Will the Auber duel probe PID handle this ?

I Am going to follow 10.5 and Habs on this, even if you have the controller of your choice there are many variables to smoking/cooking in any smoker. If i am understanding the question, there is no way to "set it and forget it". As much as we would like it to be.
there is always a need for, lets say a walk by to make sure things are what they need to be.
I'll say this ....... I have smoke a few things and when I use the Auber .....
The times I have check temps ..... be it day, nite, noon, 95* outside or what ever ....
my cabinet temp is within 1 or 2 * of what I set it for.
If the Auber was noted for climbing outside the range of what I set it for, I wouldn't have bought it.
If yours is climbing outside the set range, then you need to auto-tune or call Suyi.

OK I will take this slowly for you. Have you ever put your hand on a black car in the summer or sat on black vinyl seats in a car. The sun gives off solar r a d i a t i o n which causes the molecules in objects to move at an increased speed smashing into each other and there by creating heat ;D If you do an over night smoke and struggle to keep temp up threw the night when the sun comes up and hits the smoker you will have no trouble getting temp then. You might argue that the tower is insulated but that would be a thin argument, as thin as the insulation is. The sun has a huge effect on the performance of the smoker. In fact I had mine sitting outside in the summer and the temp inside by the door thermo was at 130f. This is also why we smoke cheese at night or when it is cold out.
Thanks all you guys are the best with all your tips and information i am placing the order in the morning for the Auber deul probe. any thing else i should get?.
If you don't have any yet I would get at least 2 bubba pucks. With 2 you can put another bisquette on top and get the job done as I did or get 3. I was buying my brother 2 also so I just got us each 2.
thanks i made mine on the lathe at work.
Nice. My dad has an old lathe in the shop but it is not working and needs a chuck and tool holder.
If you have the generator off and you are using temperatures above 200°F, then more than likely your PID can control the cabinet temperature in full sunlight on a hot day on most days. I'm discussing the specific issue that Shasta bob want to use his smoker. He wants the cabinet temperature to remain below 190°F, while his smoker is in direct sun.
I have the DigiQ II. It uses a different algorithm then a PID. It also keeps the cabinet within ±1 or 2 degrees. If I set it for 190°F with my generator on, and it is in full daylight, once it hits 190°F the DigiQ II will shut off the main element and keep it off, but has no control over the generator. Even with the DigiQ II keeping the element off the cabinet temperature will rise due to the combine heat produced by the sun and generator. Therefore I have to start items like fish, and sausage early morning, so that I can apply the smoke and turn off the generator before the sun hits the cabinet.
