Depends on what you, I mean your friend :), is looking for. The Backwoods is a water smoker while the Stumps is not. The Stumps is a gravity feed smoker but the Backwoods is not. I have seen both of these at competitions this year and talked to the owners of both. They were always happy with their choice. We competed next to a team twice that uses Backwoods and they said they wouldn't trade them for anything.

We decided on the Superior, which is the same design of the Stumps, because of the gravity feed system. I really like being able to load the chute with charcoal and let her go. If your friend is interested in the Stumps I would also check out www.superiorsmokers.com.

I think your "friend" will be happy with either cooker. :)

I just went through this a few months back. After I posted the same kind of request as this one and talking to Sonny, Hal and Ron I decided to travel to Greenfield, IN during a comp that weekend.

There were several people there using the Stump's Stretch, one using the Backwoods Chubby, two using the Backwoods Party and one using the Backwoods Fatboy. After talking to all I decided to purchase a Backwoods Party, it has size and portability.

Going there and seeing them in action was the best way to help me make a choice.

Nepas, I'm hoping within a year or two having a Stump's Stretch setting out back.$$$
