I would like to say thanks to TenPoint5 and TMB for all your advice and steering me in the right direction on the SRG.  I almost paid $200 plus s&h.  After talking to TMB he said some places are selling them for as low as $88.  I found one at an Academy store in Plano, TX where my dad lives and had him UPS it to me. It was $88.88 plus tax and with shipping it totaled $141.00  What a steal.  It would have been an even sweeter deal if I lived near an Academy Sports.  Thanks guys.

Oh and Tommy, keep your phone by you as I am sure I'll be dialing your number tonight.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

Well, the first cook in the SRG is in the books.  Man this thing can cook!  I did the four chicken legs and they took about 35minutes.  I think I overcooked just a bit, but the beauty of dark meat is that its very forgiving.  The first time I check the IT the legs were at 200.  They were still really good and I cant wait for the next cook.  I did use the smoker box with Hickory chips but I didn't notice any smoke flavor.  I guess I need to coat the cooking racks with oil or pam because the chicken was stuck to them.

Snelly, It was about 8 years ago, but I was helping my Mom's neighbor in Naples with an outdoor kitchen and had to drive up to Sarasota for supplies. It was American Hearth or something like that. That's where I saw my first pellet pooper! They may have the small bags you can try. I guess FLB is on the wrong side of the state for you. He's got some pellets for sure!

Snelly,
I too can help you out with some pellets.  How many pounds do you need?  I have probably 120 pounds of Bear Mountain apple, 40 pounds of TOOS 100% hickory pellets that my MAK doesn't like, 100 pounds of Northwood Smokers 100% hickory pellets that my MAK likes just fine and I have 120 pounds of PelletCookin's 100% hickory pellets on the way.

Just let me know buddy.

Post by: SnellySmokesEm on November 16, 2010, 09:45:33 AM
Thanks for the offer KY.  So when you say the Mak dislikes a certain pellet, is it personal preference or do they not feed into the hopper correctly?
Title: Re: UPS delivered my SRG
Post by: KyNola on November 16, 2010, 10:19:40 AM
So as to not start another potential firestorm let me just say that in my personal amateur opinion my MAK did not perform well with the TOOS pellets.

We had a rather lengthy thread about this sometime back that took a turn for the worse so let's just leave it at that.

IDK about the Turkey yet.  Not sure if I have enough time to throw a "tester" in there first.  Cant disappoint the family.  My mom always does Lamb for Christmas so I think I might volunteer for that one.

Snelly

There is no way you can screw this up and you dont need a test run
This is a no brainer
Consider a brine if you have time and an injection works really well to

The only thing I had trouble with was believing the cook time.  But then you can always FTC

Chicken looks great! Going to throw a turkey in there for Thanksgiving?

IDK about the Turkey yet.  Not sure if I have enough time to throw a "tester" in there first.  Cant disappoint the family.  My mom always does Lamb for Christmas so I think I might volunteer for that one.
Just toss in a 7 lb chicken and see how it goes, that will give you a good test and won't take long to find out how good you can do a bird in the SRG!.. Better yet smoke it for a few hrs then toss it in the SRG to crisp up the skin!

OS and TMB -

Im looking for pointers here.  I was at the supermarket and couldnt pass up this deal, .59 per pound for a young turkey.  I bought the smallest one I could find, an 11lber.  So I am going to practice sunday.  I eventually want to end up slicing it thin for sammies....

Sounds good, now remember to let the skin dry some (water on skin bad) it will be rubbery if you leave it wet.  After washing off and seasoning pat the skin dry and sprits a little oil on the skin and whatever spices you tend to use.   Do not use a sugar base or a rub with a high sugar content it will burn!    Good luck call if you need info I'm alwas open   ;)

Snelly

Treat it like you would a normal turkey
Brine it for a bit if you can
Inject it.  I used a creole butter for an injection, maybe some CT if you have it handy
Put a rub on the outside, give it an EVOO rub down if you are so inclined or CT the outside
Then calculate the cook time and believe it

This is a fool proof way to cook a gobbler or anything with wings
You will not be disappointed

Snelly When I did my first Turkey in the SRG it was an 11lb bird. I used a rub that had a pretty high sugar content. Made for an ugly presentation. Black burnt looking bird. The bird was very moist and tasted great just looked ugly. Sorta like me!!! But anywho You can use your maverick to monitor the IT of the breast in the bird. I would just suggest that where the probe cable goes over the silver ring and under the hood. That you make a foil insulating wrap, as there will be a very high concentration of heat at that spot. Also I dropped in the bird and it took 1 hour and 20 minutes until time to eat.
