Title: A Silver Lining in a Very Bad Day...
Post by: punchlock on November 24, 2010, 05:01:07 AM
What a horrible start to my day Tuesday. I woke and did the normal routine, coffee, kids, news. Today was garbage day so off to the hall closet to grab my coat. A pull on the closet door is met with a thud and a partially opened door. I look down intent on removing the most common cause "Lego" but to my dismay no Lego to be found. There is however two planks of hardwood buckled completely out of place?  ???

Not good, on further inspection I find that the sub floor is saturated with water. So I spend the next 2 hours tracking down the source of this leak. So there is a leak from a vent stack. After spending some time looking for a working flashlight (what is it with kids and flashlights?) I head up to the attic and find no issues?

Well there comes a time in this type of search where you have no other choice but to cut into a wall. Now to put this into context I recently only 4 months ago painted the entire interior. I am not amused. Out comes the drywall saw and in I go the drywall is soft and saturated with water. Inside the wall I find a plumber had mated ABS and PVC couplings together with ABS glue. That's a very bad thing, I now have a ruined hardwood floor, a damaged basement ceiling, a damaged wall and a wasted paint job.  >:( >:( >:(

There was however one good thing that happened. The wife dropped by the post office and picked up an international package. WOOO HOOO a package Full of Soileaus Rub. ;D ;D Thanks a million Squirt it made a bad day better. Had a taste and the stuff is great! Any recommendations for it's use?

>:( ???

Yeah, smoked plumber!
Sorry to hear of the water disaster...

Sorry to hear about your home.

Soileaus is good on everything I put it on, eggs, burgers, chicken... I even use it to season jerky.

Bummer!  I know the drill you went through. But at least you found a good reason to smile at the end of the day.

I think STC has the right idea for the plumber.  But I wouldn't waste good rub on a bad plumber (or smoke either ... think a high heat sear is more in order).

ABS and PVC the same color? Not here in So Cal. We know the plumbers can't read, so we color code everything ;D

Around here, one is black and one is white.  And, no, they don't work well together.

I sprinkle the Soileaus on steaks prior to the grill.  You know it has to be good when the first listed ingredient is cayenne.

I think squirt is trying to become a distributor.   ;D

Round here that glob of glue wouldnt pass rough in inspection. Might want to check the rest of your pips.

Sounds like your package of goodies came just in time.

I was thinking the same thing...  That all looks like ABS to me.

Good thing you caught that when you did, Punch.
As bad as all that mess is, it could get a LOT worse if mold set in.

First time I have seen black pvc myself? The fittings were plyable and clearly did not take to the glue? Now the task is to track down the rest of this stuff wherever it may be buried?

Did you pay the plumber to do this? If so I would seek restitution! Pay to fix it right and damages. Is this seasoning something STC makes or is it distributed. I have never heard of it?

No I bought the house this way. The house was built in the early 90's. I have been researching this type of plumbing fitting and it seems that for a short time the sold these types of fittings as a way to reduce cost. They were only intended for use on ventilation stacks and required a transition glue for proper adhesion. It appears that there is a rash of homes from this time period experiencing the same problem and all to save a few cents.....

I think it is commercially distributed? Perhaps STC can tell where he gets it.

It is a local family (moved here from Louisiana) that mixes it up, and sells it in the area grocery stores...

Here is a story a local paper wrote about them:

That looks like $$$

So in Canada, drinks are color coded (no caffeine in a drink that is not dark, aka Mountain dew) but pipes are not...

Much later understand.

Actually I had no idea there was Mountain Dew with caffeine in it, until you mentioned it in one of your posts...

Caffeine and HFCS are the only reasons it exists here.

The (or used to be) teenagers beverage of choice.
