Title: Blizzard
Post by: BuyLowSellHigh on December 11, 2010, 05:01:45 PM
I thought those came from the local DQ.

Hope the northern crew has their snuggies and a good stash of smoked goodies to hold them for a couple of days.  Just read this ...

"Upper Midwest pummeled by strengthening blizzard" (http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/12/11/winter.weather/index.html?hpt=T1)

Hang tough, guys and gals.

I'm right in the middle of it.  Well over a foot of snow, wind chills below zero and the wind is still blowing like crazy.

I'm home all alone, the wife had to work today and there is a complete white out so I told her to stay in town at the kids house, dont chance driving in this crap.

Went out to feed the critters and there was snow in the trough, wiped it out with my hand and fed em, them when I grabbed the door knob to get out my hand kinda froze to the knob.

Gotta love it!

Whiteout conditions here all day, most highways are, or at least should be, closed.  My area only had snow accumulation of about 3-4 inches, main problem is it was and is coming sideways.

Although it gets cold here, I am glad I live in Florida. All of our white stuff is on the beach.

We think alike 10.5 just took out a batch of summer sausage also, what else you gonna do when you cant see the end of your driveway (50 ')

Now I can go to work and start pushing this white ^&%$# all night long

We went up town earlier and there was 3-4 cars stuck in the walmart parking lot, 1-2 stuck at hy-vee, 3-4 stranded right in the middleof the road, you would think this is the first time these people seen snow,

Well better go to work seeya

That storm is supposed to hit us sometime starting today, but it will probably wimp out by time we get it. rain/freezing rain/ice/snow yea right I'll believe that when I see it. We'll probably only get rain and it will melt the snow we have now.  >:( I like snow, not really into the ice or freezing rain crap.

The snow is light in central Illinois, but it's still coming "down" --- sideways.
The wind is BRUTAL out there.

For some of you what we're experiencing here in KY is nothing but it's 23 degrees here.  Snowing and wind is howling.  Expecting 35 mph winds later.  Good day to stay in by the fire and slice some bacon! :)

Sounds like Hal is experiencing the same up where he's at.

LTS I know your one of them Snow Plow operators, but there is some justice in the world. That Sorry SOB that does the plowing here came by the house and pushed all of the Wet, Heavy boulder sized chunks of slush balls towards the driveway. I know thats what hes supposed to do BUT not when hes leaving a 6 foot wide path of that stuff a the end of the driveway. Yeah not only did I have to clean off my driveway but I had to clean all of that stuff he left 6 foot out into the street. Now the justice thing he was cruising down the next street over when he caught one of the Ice pile he left. Spun him sideways in the street and it took him about 20 minutes to get straightened out again.

For those that don't live in a snow zone. You probably don't know just how hated the Snowplow is. It NEVER fails about 10 minutes after you finish cleaning everything off you driveway and go back in the house. Along comes the snowplow and BURY's the end of your driveway again. Especially when they leave a 6 foot path of snow on the street. The empty house across the street has a 4ft high wall of ice and snow in his drive way from when the plow went through on that side of the street late last night.

Just a couple inches here...  But the winds are kicking up pretty bad.   Time to go start the Traeger..   (where is the little smiley icon for 'village idiot'?)

10.5

At least you get snow plows... Here they don't do residential streets unless you absolutely can't get through. Even have trouble getting around in a 4x4 fairly often.
But I feel for ya... Man I hate that sloppy snow & ice. Fortunately we are in a balmy -22 C and -34 C with the wind chill this morning. That's -29 F.

No problem with the sloppy snow and ice here.

This is one of those days I'm glad I moved from MI to TX 15 years ago.  Tempoint5, I remember well the snowplow thing.  One of those years living in MI we went through a daily ~ 2" fall for about two weeks.  Every day, same thing when you came home -- wall of plowed snow and ice, can't get in the driveway.  Everyone got fed up, the entire town was PO'ed. One day several of the residents on a street around the corner from my house planned and got together and formed a human chain across the street to block the snowplow.  They won the battle but it didn't last long - he just came back the next day and buried them well.

It must be a huge system - we've been getting the winds since yesterday about noon and our temps are quite cool, going down to 30 °F tonight.  But no precip, sun is shining, and we'll be back into the mid 70's by mid week.  Our issue since yesterday is high winds, dry conditions and low humidity, so we have a "Red Flag" fire warning out until 7 pm tonight.  From our current hazardous weather outlook ...

"A RED FLAG WARNING MEANS THAT CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS
ARE EITHER OCCURRING NOW...OR WILL SHORTLY. A COMBINATION OF
STRONG WINDS...LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY...AND WARM TEMPERATURES WILL
CREATE EXPLOSIVE FIRE GROWTH POTENTIAL."

So... what do they use for plows down there? Are they using a plow on the front of a truck?

Around here they use a grader with a snow wing blade on the right side. The wing blade is dropped to trap the snow and make parking spots or when plowing by a driveway.

I run a Brand New (6 hours) 621 case pay-loader with a 16' snow pusher on it, but ya all our motor graders have the wing on them also to remove some of the snow windrow at the ends of driveways, works pretty good until mailboxes appear :P

The guys around here dont know about being nice and cleaning the driveway they just plowed in. All they have is the blade on the front of the dump truck.

BTW it is possible to sweat when the temp is 2º with a 25 mph wind and you are shoveling the snow and ice layer off your driveway.

I think I'll just stay up here in Alaska for now. Light dusting about 5 F. and sunny. No blizzards in the forcast. Baking some apple pies today and sipping cold ones. All inside work today. You guys hang in there and stay warm!!! Hope things calm down soon for you all.  ;)
