Title: SPICY ITALIAN SAUSAGE & PEPPER STEW
Post by: Sailor on December 12, 2010, 02:29:28 PM
I was hankering for something new to make and searched for Italian Sausage recipes since I had a Vac pack of homemade Mild Italian Sausage that had come unsealed and needed to use it.  I thought it turned out pretty good.  My wife is not a mushroom fan so we Xed the mushrooms.  I think the next time that I make it I will put some pineapple chunks on the plate as I think it will give it that something that seemed to be missing.  My official taste tester said to put this in my recipe file folder so I guess it passed the test.

SPICY ITALIAN SAUSAGE & PEPPER STEW

Read more about it at http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1818,158167-251199,00.html

Sausage lovers, this one's for you! Choose mild or hot Italian sausage, as you prefer, and if you wish, serve this savory stew with a sprinkling of grated Parmesan cheese.

1 lb. Italian sausage
1 lg. onion, cut into 3/4" pieces
1 clove garlic, minced
1 can (16 oz.) stewed tomatoes, undrained
3/4 c. Pace Picante sauce
8 oz. mushrooms, halved or quartered
1 tsp. dry basil leaves, crushed
1/4 tsp. dry oregano leaves, crushed
1 sm. red bell pepper, cut into 3/4" pieces
1 sm. green bell pepper, cut into 3/4" pieces

Cut sausage into 1 inch pieces; remove casing. Cook in 10 inch skillet until lightly browned, about 2 minutes; drain. Add onion and garlic; cook until sausage is no longer pink, about 3 minutes; pour off drippings. Add tomatoes, Pace Picante sauce, mushrooms, basil and oregano. Simmer uncovered 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add peppers; simmer 5 minutes or until peppers are tender. Serve with additional Pace Picante sauce. Makes 4 servings, about 6 cups stew.

I used a pot instead of a skillet as I tend to slop things all over the stove.

Plated and ready to go.

Thatza spicey meataball!

I just had to.  Sailor that looks like something that will go down good in our 10 deg weather today!  Where can we meet?  Oh well, I'll just go down to Molanari's at lunch.  He makes something very similar but keeps the sausage in links and just cuts the pepper in half.  Boy is it good.  I have to fight bad memories though.  The second time I had the dish - I had my first gall bladder attack.  My buddy was wondering why I spent 25 min. in the bathroom.  I'm just glad nobody else came in to hear me groaning.  But I went back and finished it.  And sopped up all the "gravy" with bread!

I'm a little behind on things - well, ok, like WAY BEHIND.
I just read this recipe and it really appealed to me.  I am going to have to make this.  Perfect cold weather dish!
