I'm thinking hard on this one!

Got me to thinking about my cheapo injector...
Did some googling.  The nice trigger ones are like $50+...
Then I found one (that looks JUST LIKE THEM)...
Tractor Supply.  $20.
It's a syringe for medicating horses ---- but it's the same dang thing (and all the injector needles fit it)
I'm gonna see if they have one tomorrow.

Will do.

FYI --- AK has one, but theirs is about $50 too.

Nice!   Yes, that syringe from TSC will do the trick.   You'll probably want a 12# needle.

I'm going to get one to do hamzilla's sister when we get back home..

I've tried injecting peach jam but never blackberry, the seeds are gonna be a bi**h to strain out.

Go for it Hal!

Hal, you got me excited about the injector because I have a TSC within 2 miles of my house and I go by it at least twice a day.

Checked it out online .. here's the link to the TSC model:

http://www.tractorsupply.com/livestock/livestock-health/livestock-veterinary-supplies/veterinary-syringes/pro-shot-50cc-syringe-2226830

Looks like the price is $21.99

A couple of differences from the AK version:
- Appears no needles included (AK includes both the straight needle for marinades and solutions with suspended solids, and the perforated spray needle for brining).  The straight needles run about $11-$12 each (they're big needles - either 1/8" inch or 1/4" i.d., 5.5 " insertion length, 6" overall).

-  Different needle attachments -- AK version uses the Morton meat pump attachment (screw in with O-ring); the TSC model uses the traditional Luer medical type fitting.

If you can find the right needles for the TSC model, and they are the same price, then you have 22 + 22 = 44, vs 47.40 for the AK version with two needles included.

Went looking for Luer type needles for the TSC model.  The closest I could find was 7 ga industrial (0.150 " o.d.), blunt tip, 2" overall are available from Granger for $48/12-pack (http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/Needle-5FTV6?cm_mmc=Google%20Base-_-Adhesives,%20Sealants%20and%20Tape-_-Dispensing%20Guns-_-5FTV6) or 12 ga (0.109 "o.d.), blunt tip 4" for $49/12-pack (http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/Needle-5FTY8?Pid=search).  Right now I am stumped on the needles.

I know it doesn't show any needles with it, but that one guy (in that thread I linked) said his came with two needles (?)
The other guy also said you can use the needles from any injector -- he said they all fit it.
I'll find out more this afternoon if they have it in stock.

I can't wait to try this.  I'll have to use store brand jam since it is 20 degrees out and the fresh markets are closed.  I'll use some Maker's Mark instead too.

Interested in what you find, Hal.

The guy in that thread who said it came with two needles was talking about his AK purchased one.  The guy who bought the TSC version said any needle fits it, but I don't know what he meant by any needle - Luer is the standard old twist lock medical type, the AK version (actually the Dial-O-Matic) uses a screw in needle.  If the TSC model can use the the screw in type, then the needles issue is solved.  The picture on the BBQB thread also doesn't look like the current TSC website version, so something may have changed in two years.  There's a good image of the Dial-O-Matic at Cabella's, here (http://www.cabelas.com/food-storage-prep-dial-o-matic-meat-injector-gun-8482-2.shtml), where you can see the needle style.

I was at AK about two weeks ago and bought a new 4 oz injector.  I looked at the Dial-O-Matic, it's pretty cool.  But I passed because the capacity was ~ 2 oz. and the shot size is limited to 5 ml (about 1 tsp).  Just seemed to me it would be a lot of shots.

I'm going to get one to do hamzilla's sister when we get back home..

I got the one from TSC (it was $19.99 in-store), but, NO, it doesn't come with any needles (and the ones they sell are really short)
And... The needle I have does NOT fit it.

So, I went to AK and started to order the needles, but thought, "What if these don't fit?"...
I just went ahead and ordered the whole gun with the needles.

If they fit this one, I'll hang on to it for backup, and if they don't, I'll take it back.
Shame, cause it's real nice --- if I had a needle to fit it.

On the upside, it occured to me how I almost froze to death plowing snow last year...
So, I got some super-insulated (rated -40F) boots, gloves, pants & stuff while I was there.
I might look like a Siberian mountain man, but I'm gonna survive better this winter  ;D

FYI---The gal that checked me out said the Farmer's Almanac is calling for a MONSTER winter storm in January.

You'll be stylin' out on the John Deer next time it snows!    There is a retired guy in our subdivision who plows ours all of the time.  I had shoveled quite a bit before we left for NYC, but didn't finish.   I saw him rolling towards our house as I was zipping down the street airport bound.   So, he's getting some pulled pork and belly bacon when we get home.

And I've had enough of a monster winter storm, thank you very much...

I went to Tractor Supply to get some parts for my snow thrower. I had a few bucks to burn, so while I was there I decided to pick up a syringe for medicating horses. I figured if it didn't work I could return it and get some extra parts.

I have a 4 ounce stainless steel injector that I got from sausage maker. It works great on hams, turkey, butts and large chickens. But when I want to inject loins, and smaller birds; it is difficult to use.

The syringe holds 50cc, and comes with an extra "O" ring. The cost was $21.00 plus tax.

(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y174/Formatted/Misc/th_Syringe_In_Package.jpg) (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y174/Formatted/Misc/Syringe_In_Package.jpg)

You can easily adjust it to inject 1cc through 5cc with each squeeze of the trigger. The best setting when I tested it was 5cc.

(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y174/Formatted/Misc/th_Syringe_Adjustment.jpg) (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y174/Formatted/Misc/Syringe_Adjustment.jpg)

The injector needles that fit this syringe are the type that come with the inexpensive injectors. I have a few cheap injectors that I have accumulated over time. I used the needle from two different brands, and both fit the syringe perfectly. At first I thought there would be leakage around the needle, because the syringe did not have an "O" ring where the needle is inserted. I plugged both wholes in the needle and squeezed the trigger, and no water leaked out at the insertion point. I have not used it to inject meat, but I don't feel I will have any problems. The needles from my 4 ounce injector do not fit.

(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y174/Formatted/Misc/th_Syringe_Needles.jpg) (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y174/Formatted/Misc/Syringe_Needles.jpg)

So for the purpose that I intend to use it for, it will do the job.

I also received my new injector from AK, but haven't even opened the box yet.

One needle came from an injector that I got when I purchased Chef William's Cajun Injector Marinade, the other I got when I purchased my electric turkey fryer. As I find my other injectors I will test those needles also.

I got this one at Tractor Supply yesterday also.

I told them what I was gonna use it for and he told me if I couldn't find any

needles to work with it, just bring it back.

Before I left, they found some 16 ga 1 1/2 inch needles (pack of 6 for 3.99).

I got home and the Tony Chacherre's needle screwed right in and I have a

BUNCH of them new in the packaging. The price at my TS was 18.95 plus Tax.

I think I am goning to like it.
