Title: Red Green Red Velvet Cake for Christmas
Post by: Caribou on December 30, 2010, 06:28:50 AM
In my continued obsession with baking red velvet cakes I made a special one for Christmas.
I took out a 3rd of the cake batter before adding the red dye and added green food dye to it.

I took a quick pic of the last piece, it's not the best because I wasn't using a serrated knife to cut it.
The cake was gone so quick, our friends brought their teenage sons and we aren't exactly light weight eaters either  :D

Caribou - you are my hero!

The black food coloring is pretty cool and pretty strong.  I've used it a few years now to make designs in pancakes.  When you have to make a few hundred at a time - you find ways to make it fun for your helpers.

Carolyn made me make this one,  we have been talking about red velvet cake for awhile and I have resisted because it's sooooooo red.... but I caved and did the red & green thing....  the red layers are Carolyn's recipe & the green is cheesecake

only the green layer was cheesecake,  it was only flavored green ;D   vanilla flavoring only,  I probably should have made it peppermint

Peppermint - red
Spearmint - green

Now that would blow some minds!

Some of you people are a little weird, and you know who you are!

Honey, add a cake mix and some food coloring to the grocery list please!   ;D

I bet the Amish would use beet juice for the red color because that's what was originally used for the color.
There are a few recipes online that use beet juice.

I'd send you some Nepas but I don't think it will ship well ;)
So there!
