I have heard that sand can replace water in the drip pan, is this a good idea?  Sorry if this is an old thread, I just joined today. ???

I'm sure you could use sand, but I wouldn't.

You want the pucks to extinguish, and I don't think the sand would do that.

And somehow if I did it, there would be a gust of wind or something and somehow the sand would end up on the food.

What is the reasoning behind the sand? a drier environment?

I wouldn't use sand. Part of the liquid's job is to extinguish pucks and most of the time they then float out of the way. It also dilutes any grease drippings. With sand, the pucks would stack up as they dropped of the burner. Grease would also collect either in pools or on the pucks. This is a recipe for a grease fire.

Nope, don't use sand.  There's a reason it's called a water bowl.  :-\
